Beyond the Gates, BTG, Smitty, Bradley "Smitty" Smith, Mike Manning

On the Wednesday, October 21, 2026 episode of ‘Beyond the Gates’, the Hawthornes took the handcuffs off, Kat (Colby Nixon) and Eva (Ambyr Michelle) struggled to maintain their Shanice-induced truce, and Smitty (Mike Manning) got the mother of all visitors.

All Figured Out

Andre (Sean Freeman) met with Kat, who sighed that Shanice had pressured her and Eva to work together planning Shanice’s wedding. Kat mentioned that she and Eva had both warned Shanice about the inevitable difficulties and that they were already at odds about which deejay to hire, but Andre was glad to hear that the half-sisters had at least kept their disagreement cordial. Andre empathized with Shanice since he had married into a family with grown children, as she was about to do.

Talk turned to Smitty’s arrest, and Kat feared that tough times were coming. Kat wondered if she could find holes in Jacob’s case and find evidence that would prove Smitty innocent – after all, Kat said, she knew Jacob’s thought process from having helped with his case against Leslie, and when Allison had kidnapped Chelsea. Andre reminded Kat that the blood plasma ring killed people who got in their way, but he had to force a smile when Kat decided to pick Izaiah’s brain for anything Jacob might have confided to him.

Stay With You

At Uptown, Izaiah (Lami) surprised Eva by commemorating the anniversary of their first date. Eva was excited to let Leslie know that Izaiah had remembered, but Izaiah warned that Leslie would crash the party if alerted to it, and he wanted the celebration to remain private. Izaiah marveled that the simple act of borrowing a pen from Eva had changed his life, and he promised that there were more “corny” things he had in mind for them later at home that evening.

Eva became emotional as she credited Izaiah with literally saving her life – his constantly staying by her side in the hospital had brought her out of her pre- and post-surgery comas. As she admitted she had never made it to a first anniversary with a man before and toasted to the milestone, Kat arrived, wanting to talk to Izaiah. Kat managed a “congratulations” when informed that Eva and Izaiah were marking a year together, and Izaiah asked if he and Kat could chat another time. Kat bowed out gracefully, and Eva thanked Izaiah for being considerate of her.

The Bigger Picture

Dani (Karla Mosley) received an unexpected visit from Pamela (Cady McClain), who was intent on selecting wardrobe for Dani’s televised interview with Tia Allen the next day. Though Dani hadn’t realized the segment was that soon, she grappled with Pamela over outfits until they agreed on one. Then Pamela reminded Dani that Tia would want to include Andre in the feature. Dani held that Andre didn’t like to be photographed, but she told Pamela that she’d try to get Andre to concede this one time.

Andre came home from his conversation with Kat and heard about the Tia Allen interview from Dani. He initially stuck to his preference of staying behind the camera in his work, but after a moment he greenlit having some photos taken. Dani was relieved that Andre was willing, but wasn’t sure how well he’d react to the attire Pamela had chosen for him. Andre ribbed that he wasn’t sure he wanted to know what it was.

Still Love You When We Fight

Jacob (Jibre Hordges) came home to find Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) watching a rom-com. The marrieds were surprised they were both out of work at the same time given their schedules, and, while Jacob sat down to watch the movie with Naomi, he remained tense, eventually blurting out that their agreement to not talk about work at home wasn’t working for him. Naomi liked having a boundary in place that kept them from arguing, but, with the door now open, she warned Jacob that he wasn’t looking at Smitty’s case from the right angle.

Naomi questioned whether or not Jacob’s department had even analyzed the video showing Smitty receiving drugs from Max, which Smitty continued to insist had been faked. Jacob recognized that Smitty was prone to “cross ethical lines” to get a story and wasn’t convinced he was wholly innocent. Jacob then fumed that the Duprees were always negating his cases to protect family members; it was just that this time they couldn’t easily get Smitty out of trouble.

Jacob went on that he always had to compromise in his marriage to Naomi – he’d given up his dream of having children for her, and he’d been understanding after learning that Naomi had hid carrying the BRCA gene from him. Naomi expressed shock that Jacob had been holding in so much resentment and suggested re-entering couples counseling with him, but he replied that having gotten things off his chest had made him feel better. They resumed watching the video, yet they both looked uneasy.

I Stand Accused

Martin (Brandon Claybon) wanted to stay home at the brownstone with Smitty, but Smitty pointed out that Martin was slipping in the polls. He felt that the running Congressman was being too optimistic about the arrest not tanking his campaign and wanted Martin to publicly distance himself from him. Once Smitty got Martin to go out and talk to voters, he grabbed an old burner phone and left a desperate message for Max, asking him to come out of hiding and corroborate his story that drugs were never exchanged between them.

While out at the mall, Martin noticed that several people were giving him dirty looks. One woman approached him and said that she had been able to overlook Martin being in a same-sex relationship – but his being married to a murderer had rendered her unable to trust him. As the woman declared Smitty guilty, a man approached and refused to let the woman “read [Martin] for filth.” Even if Smitty had killed “that lady” – which Martin said was impossible – that wasn’t on Martin, and Martin still had his vote. The woman wasn’t having it with either of them and walked away.

Mama Said Knock You Out

Smitty was composing a journal entry entitled “Diary of a Falsely Accused Man” when his mother, Jenny Smith, arrived on the door, having made the trip to D.C. from Ohio. Jenny said that she had to come once Smitty told her and his father about the arrest; though Jenny added that Smitty’s dad would have accompanied her had he been able to get out of work, Smitty called it an excuse. After Jenny assured Smitty that her husband just wasn’t comfortable around the powerful Duprees, she counseled Smitty that justice would win out.

Jenny then amazed Smitty by revealing that, like him, she had given up a career as an accountant to have a family. She credited Smitty’s time at home with helping Samantha and Tyrell heal after their abandonment and years in foster care, and stated that Smitty deserved to revisit his aspirations. Smitty frowned that his “fantasies of a Pulitzer” had ruined Martin’s re-election as Martin returned and gave “Miss Jenny” a warm greeting. She promised her son and son-in-law that they would get through Smitty’s ordeal together, as a family.
