To be clear, Tonya is pretty well known across the Caribbean, in particular, Jamaica and the West Indies. She has been active with arts and humanities initiatives for decades now. One year, she was bestowed with the Doctor Bird award, Jamaica's highest award that can be given to a non Jamaican citizen. And I have heard, from family in Canada that she has consistently been a big advocate for the Black arts movement (which is likely a smaller community than in the U.S., which itself is also relatively small) in Canada for decades.
