GH: Actor leaves, former Y&R actor in

I was growing to like Mesure, and despite his original villainous tour in Port Charles, he had nice chemistry with LW.. McKenna would have worked much better as suggested as an A. J. or Drew recast (though that branch of the family tree could be easily pruned), a fresh face for Steven Lars even.

I suppose Robin Finch will make an appearance in Baden Baden (offscreen) to adjust the accent between takes. How to explain he, Valentin and Anna are the same age -- maybe he found Felicia Hunt's elixir from the end of THE DOCTORS.

Interview with Chris. Talks about his long history with Laura Wright, Frank, and other crew members and also mentions getting a letter from Erika Slezak about joining GH

No talk about the accent but I know Frank was the main one pushing to get rid of Lois and Martin’s so maybe the Aussie sound gets dropped

Lol well I still like Cameron for the most part though he did piss me off for how weak he was during Sam’s death. I would like to see all three of Alan’s sons on canvas for a bit.

@Vee Thanks for tagging me. I know we both always praise McKenna's work on OLTL so how somehow fitting for today's GH that he is dumped in a part that as you've said is so throwaway (I didn't mind Measure and I do think he had a real spark with Laura Wright, but your dragging of the character has been more entertaining than the material he's been given). There's so much you can do with Chris McKenna and this is where you put him? He probably won't even last to the end of 2025. Summer, maybe.

I'm not surprised he isn't a Drew replacement, as I imagine Frank and ABC want to hang onto Cameron Mathison as long as they can, but he definitely would have made sense as a new AJ. Maybe Frank is never going there due to the nasty way the show treated AJ and Sean Kanan.

I don't have a problem with them losing Martin's accent as it was just something else for MEK to struggle through, but trying to get rid of Lois' accent seems silly when it's a defining part of the character and doesn't seriously affect Rena's performance. When the story came around I wondered if Rena didn't want to keep doing the accent, but if it was a Frank mandate it just comes across as a producer who knows his time on the show (or the show itself) is winding down and wants to grab at any random power move.

Yup. Evan Hofer randomly mentioned it in one of his exit interviews when asked about potentially coming back as another character. I wanna say it was the one with Michael Fairman. I hated Martin sounding like Foghorn Leghorn but in the case of Lois I’m glad they reverted back.

I'm just glad it didn't stick for Lois. So ridiculous. I also thought Martin's accent and beard were the only character he had, but here we are.

I think Brennan is a character with a brief shelf life no matter who plays him, but Chris is used to that from Y&R and still has a thriving and very active primetime career so I am not worried about him. I was a little surprised he was available, frankly. I was pleased to hear him say the speed was no problem for him since he was raised on this, and to hear good news about Erika.

Given the state of the industry, between the lingering affects of the strikes, what led to the strikes, the streaming bubble bursting, that !@#$%^&*] Zaslav and his clones, the fires, etc. I wonder if we will get more of these soap drop-ins while the show is still around.

Now that you mention it maybe Chris wouldn't have had time to play a long-term role like AJ anyway. If this does somehow work out and he's another JPS (I know he has had a much longer-term primetime career), I wouldn't complain.

I am definitely glad to hear about Erika.

And @slick jones you are right, he could have made a great Steven Lars too...although he would probably just be killed by hammy Heather's poisoned hip.

    • IMDb is definitely incorrect, because the final week of episodes in 1974 is uploaded to Youtube in audio form, and Mark and Laurie are there until the very end. The last episode shows Mark going back to the priesthood. I looked at the newspaper and the earliest reference to their house being haunted by Georgina is in December of 1973. This is dated Dec 14, but this same synopsis ran in the papers until the end of December in other publications. So it must have been within those last three months or so. I think Stephanie Braxton joined around 1969-1970. I saw it stated in other newspapers that David Gale joined around September 1972.

    • Opal having siblings could add to the story. However, it raises questions about Tad's adoption. Why were the Martins allowed to adopt him if Tad had aunts or uncles who could have cared for him?  Logic limited the number of possible Gardner's (and whatever Opal's maiden name was).  Even though Linda Thorson would have been a hysterical choice given her British accent.  Especially because SOD often published questions by readers who wondered why Tad and Jenny didn't speak like their mother.   All of which is still not an excuse for Tad's evil doppelgänger Ted.
    • And if I remember correctly, at one point, they were considering having Linda Thorson play Opal's sister.
    • Interesting. Makes me wonder how the day to day looked for Secret Storm at this point in the run. This seems very to deal with the psychological aspect, I guess the "inner storm", and the music is almost sinister. If this is from 1974 there's not much room for dates it could've been from as it ended on February 8th.  It's hard to tell from an edit featuring just one storyline, but if this was the day to day it might've been heavy for the casual viewers.   ETA: Stephanie Braxton is credited to have appeared as Laurie from 1970-1973. David Gale is credited only in 1973 and Alexander Scourby from 1972-1973. I know IMDB isn't always right, but I'd say this is likely 1973 - I'm guessing all these characters exited before 1974 and this might be a part of their final storyline.
    • Well, they were both involved with Ray Gardner.  Then, the actress left in 1980, only to return as a somewhat broader interpretation of the character after Dottie was SORASed.  By that time, Opal had left in 1983.  So, while they serve the same story function,(verbally abusive/neglectful mothers who make you feel sorry for their daughters), one could argue that Edna was the carbon copy.
    • Okay, now it's my turn to ask about the Thorntons, namely Edna. Did she and Opal have any scenes together? I ask because I was familiar with Opal first, so when I found out about Edna, my biased mind saw her as the first try for that type of character.
    • There is no dispute that Jill Farren Phelps had a successful career in daytime based on longevity, but that does not preclude discussion and dislike of her decisions at various shows. Sure there may have been some misogyny involved BITD(we don't know as I don't recall JFP ever mentioning that) but the head of CBS Daytime at that point was a woman and there were other women involved BTS. I think that so long as an EP could deliver, or at least talk a good game they would be respected.
    • It surprises/disappoints me too that GL's ratings during '89-'93 don't reflect the quality of the show. But when I call it great soap, I'm not defining that by ratings either.  I'm probably in the minority, but I think Reilly takes something intangible with him when he goes. There's a sense of humor that just disappears in '93.
    • Ok, I know nothing about Another World except their catchy intro song from long ago, but this makes me want to catch!  That crazy mother keeping her son's girlfriend or wife hostage, wow!
