Y&R and B&B: Feb,March,April,May 2024 soccer preemptions- western USA

A few days of soccer on CBS broadcast TV during soap slots in USA western timeslots.

This happened in 2022 and 2023 on some (but not all) Tuesdays and Wednesdays of Feb/March/April/May.
the "UEFA Champions League" (European soccer tournament)
will air on CBS broadcast television on some of these dates.
The tournament is broadcast live from  Europe in the evening, which happens to be daytime in USA.

Just like in 2022 and 2023,
CBS Sports is covering two simultaneous matches per day.

  • One match carried
on *both* CBS broadcast TV *and* on ParamountPlus.

  • The other match is carried  *only* on ParamountPlus.

Tues. Feb. 13, Wed. Feb. 14 – airs on both CBS broadcast TV and Paramount Plus.
Tues. Feb. 20, Wed. Feb. 21 – airs on both CBS broadcast TV and Paramount Plus.

These February dates are all "Round of 16, First Leg" of the tournament.

Tues. March 5, Wed. March 6– airs on both CBS broadcast TV and Paramount Plus.
[Tues. March 12 and Wed. March 13 are currently listed as *only* Paramount Plus.]
The March dates are  all "Round of 16, Second Leg" of the tournament.

There may be other dates in April and May, to be announced.

This impacts CBS soaps (but not in all timezones) and only in the USA.
In some markets Y&R will be affected, in some B&B, in some both soaps.
This affects the Mountain, Pacific, Alaska, and Hawaii timezones.

Canada is unaffected. Y&R and B&B will air on Global and CTV at normal times in all Canada timezones.

For the dates in February and also March 5&6:
CBS live soccer coverage
Pre-game show 2:00-3:00 PM EST
Soccer match 3:00-5:00 PM EST
Total of three hours of live programming.

(2pm-5pm EST)
(1pm-4pm CST)
(Noon-3pm MST)
(11am-2pm PST)
(10am-1pm AKST Alaska)
(9am-noon HST Hawaii)

What this means:  One or both soaps might not air in western timezones,
but the soap(s) will still air on CBS stations on the east coast.
In some cities, one or both soaps will air on broadcast TV
at a special time, earlier or later in the day, or overnight.
You might find your soap on a sister channel at a different time.

So it won't be counted as a "full preemption" and the episodes will be uploaded online.
Be sure to check cbs.com if it doesn't air in your city.

Thanks for this. I was checking recently on the scheduling but the CBS sports website only listed Paramount+ for airing the games. That said, looks like The Talk will be preempted on both coasts and so will Let's Make a Deal, particularly in markets where the show airs after The Talk.

This is the third year in a row they've done this.

According to this, the deal has been extended to 2030:
Article dated August 2022 from Fortune (archived):
https://web.archive.org/web/20230329101012/https://fortune.com/2022/08/19/paramount-renews-us-rights-champions-league-valued-at-1-5-billion/

"Paramount is betting the sport will continue to gain popularity in the U.S. The Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool attracted 2.8 million viewers on its CBS network in May, the largest U.S. audience ever for a final game broadcast on English-language television. It also was the largest streaming audience for a match on Paramount+. "

The Champions League final aired on CBS-TV on Saturday May 28, 2022, so that's what they're basing this August 2022 article on.
So I guess based on that Saturday rating of the final, they decided to continue the annual Tuesday/Wednesday matches on CBS-TV.

The 2023 final aired on CBS-TV on Saturday June 10, 2023, and I don't know the numbers/ratings on that.

*** Update: there will be quarterfinals on CBS-TV on all four of these dates.

UEFA Champions League Semifinals:

Tues. May 7 and Wed. May 8, 2024.
(semifinals broadcast status not yet announced)

UEFA Champions League
FINAL match:  Saturday June 1st, 2024:
Being on a Saturday, the final match won't affect soaps.

According to the much missed site ShowBuzzDaily, the June 10, 2023 broadcast of the UEFA Champions League Final started at 3:01 p.m. and averaged 2.183 million viewers, of which 1.049 million were in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The airing did a 0.99 Household rating. The game was between Manchester City and Internazionale Milano football clubs.

The game was also broadcast on Univision and something called TUDN, which is an American Spanish-language sports network that apparently is the successor name to Univision Deportes.

As for the May 28, 2022 game you mentioned, it had 2.761 million viewers which rounded up to the 2.8 million cited by Fortune. In Adults 18-49 viewers, the game did 1.299 million, and in households, it had a 1.11 rating. As cited, the game was between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

I learned to check paramountpressexpress and then I search sports, soccer, UEFA, and various things, until I get some info.
The info is here:

https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-sports/releases/?view=108987-cbs-sports-sets-programming-lineup-for-uefa-champions-league-round-of-16-across-paramount-and-the-cbs-television-network-3

Then I back that up with checking actual tv listings on zap2it or ontvtonight, etc.

Thanks again for all the info @janea4old.

Although the UEFA games are not in the same league as NFL games in terms of ratings on CBS, the male demographic is the one CBS is trying to reach during periods without the NFL, which explains why they are hellbent on seeing the games stay on the network through 2030, and why we are getting preemptions on the West Coast in particular on Tuesdays/Wednesdays.

Between the male demo, being a male-dominated sport, and high-income households watching, "this is the way" is the phrase most appropriate for why the network continues with UEFA even though not one American team is competing.

Regarding the soccer disruption in western timezones
for CBS soaps on March 5 and March 6, 2024:

Updated the 4th post of this thread,
https://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/65944-yr-and-bb-feb-march-2024-soccer-preemptions-western-usa/?do=findComment&comment=1897524

Updated that post with the information on which matches are airing on CBS broadcast TV on March 5 and 6.
(Previously they said there'd be a match on CBS on those two March dates, but the teams were TBA.  Now the teams are announced.)

The soccer disruption is the same.
Just adding the matches details, in case anyone watches European football and wants to know who's playing on those dates.

    • To bring over from the May Sweeps Thread from @Chris B   I know the fashions have gotten mixed reviews but I actually like what the new costume designer is putting the cast in. It feels more modern and the more tacky pieces I feel make sense for rich people. They're buying for the brand and the price and we often see celebs in things like this. Especially for a character like Nikki, I feel the more over the top (and tacky), the more realistic it is.   I agree. While it has been hit and miss no question, I have found it fascinating to watch what the costume designer is attempting to do with the various characters and their clothes. Some have been overdue. Some have been fascinating. But (outside of Billy) not boring to watch. I definitely find it more modern as well.   My growing issue has been it's not good that the best reason to watch Y&R as of late has been to see what people are wearing rather than the writing. It feels like a red flag.
    • Haha. The fact that I stopped regularly viewing at the same time and know what you are talking about is chef's kiss.    I'm slowly bingewatching Nurse's Ball Week. But it's slow for me because a lot of the same tics and writing flaws for me that made me throw up my hands is still evident *cough*CVE*cough* Thankfully, there are some things I like also and from a glance in the GH May Thread, it seem like it had a good Sweeps with good fallout. And do I even need to mention Nina finally slapping the taste out of Carly's mouth? See? Regardless of her flaws, I do enjoy Korte-headed episodes over CVE-headed episodes because they always seem to have more emotional resonance to long-time fans.
    • And that charity does still get mentioned from time to time. I want to say the last time was some time this year, too.
    • Oh, no. Vernon has definitely had his moments.   Choose silence anyone?
    • Search YT for Edwyn Sanchez, he posted an AI enhanced episode of ATWT and it is beautiful.
    • That's so funny, that's how I listen to Montecito - while walking my dog. I'll have to check out Forever & a Day.
    • I need to listen! Forever & a Day was a fun soapy podcast to have available when I walked the dog.
    • A few years ago, Devon and Nick started a charity organization together, I think it's for housing in the community.
    • I’m hoping to start getting to know Vernon better this month. He’s really only been a bunch of noble and good tropes so far. I don’t want him to be taken down the way Ted has been, but it seems he was a long-running Senator and no matter what party you are, lasting longer than twenty years means you’re looking out for you (and not who you’re supposed to be looking out for) most of all. I want to get to know both Vernon and Anita beyond their Dupree posturing. Clifton Davis can sleepwalk handling the kind of material Christopher Bernau and David Lewis handled and I’d like to see more than just a saint.
    • I thought Emily/Hal was a really interesting pairing. And I think KMH played that version of Emily very well! It might not have been what people wanted from Emily, and the writing got pretty gross at the end, but I thought she embodied that character effectively.
