Although later it was done to death on most soaps I think the first time a baby's paternity was in question would have been on Days with the Laura/Bill/Mickey triangle.

Laura married Mickey but was raped by Bill and became pregnant. But mickey was sterile so the baby was Bill's. it took years for the paternity reveal.

Around the same time on Another World Rachel married Russ but had sex with Steven Frame and became pregnant with his child. Everyone believed the child to be  Russ' until the truth came out.

ATWT did the Paul/Dan/Liz  story where Liz got pregnant by Dan who was unhappily married to Susan. But Susan fell pregnant also so Dan stayed with her. His brother Paul married Liz and Dan was unaware Betsy was his daughter, not his niece.

Up until then (late 1960's) that sort of story wouldn't have been permitted to due to censorship of the time.

I think another obvious issue is that paternity wasn't that easy to determine - DNA testing didn't really get to that point until some time in the mid-80s. So either paternity would've been obvious from the timelines not matching up or that the blood type made it impossible for someone to be the father; or obviously as in DAYS's case someone being sterile.

I can think of one earlier...Robin's paternity on The Guiding Light during it's first year on TV back in 1952 - 1953.

I'm guessing having Robin's mother Kathy Roberts secretly elope to marry Bob Lang, being widowed when Bob died and then marrying Dick Grant (the late James Lipton, later a writer on a number of soaps and host of Inside the Actors Studio) when Bob was barely even cold was the way they got around censorship issues.

And of course while Kathy was busy trying to pass off her child as Dick's, she also had to face a trial over her suspected involvement in Bob's death and the machinations of Dick's mother who suspected the truth.

Eventually Kathy told Dick the truth about Robin but by then he no longer cared as he was having an affair with nurse Janet Johnson (Ruth Warrick).

    • The kid's a violinist, he's not James Dean looking for trouble on the beachside streets of Port Charles.
    • After watching today's episode, I don't like how Dante came down on Gio for Rocco drinking. It is so contrived to have this sudden conflict just as the reveal of Gio's paternity is about to be revealed. It's just sloppy and lazy writing IMO.
    • Don't forget, ”I want to struggle, but I also want to live in this huge, fabulous loft, in a town with one art gallery, and allow my wife and child's fortune to be controlled by her wicked stepsister!” wa wa wa Besides, what was Sam going to do to protect her?  Throw crayons at the guy? The actual daughter of Rachel and Mac would've told him to go throw on his cutoff shorts, paint a masterpiece, and leave the business stuff to people who own at least two pairs of trousers.

Seriously, though, at what point does Iris learn that Evan is Janice's son?
    • Elliot is SOOOOO tasty in this period. He's so wicked. One of the reasons I stayed on with the show when I began watching.
    • I can get through another 10 to 20 episodes. April is such a compelling character. The actress just owns the screen. I think this is also why I'm annoyed by Draper. Margo and April are so fantastic that Draper is a wet blanket (except for one scene which I mention below).   Draper was bearable in his scenes with Logan because he was not whining about the house. If he has more scenes with Logan, I can tolerate him. As of now, he's just very one note. Everyone has had more to do.  Thank you for explaining about Raven's backstory and her connection to Draper. It clears things up. Logan explained things a bit in the convo with Draper, but there was still some things I was not sure of. Gabet and Kibbee are just sensational. I now see why people adore Sharon Gabet. How did AW squander her talents? SMH.  It's the way Draper is written. I'm drawn to Eliot who is a total cheating pig. The writing and the performance are first-rate. Draper is stomping around like a spoiled child and I don't have the benefit of seeing April and Draper's relationship from the beginning so this is my first intro to Draper. He's annoying as can be. ========== There's also an African-American police officer who's struggling to walk again. He's Steve's partner. He took his first steps. I can't tell if they are writing him off or if he's going to say. I hope he stays because the actor is quite charismatic.
    • Oh no!  Did you not like the Susan character? She intrigued me from that one episode I skimmed through. What didn't you like about her?
    • The eternal dream...him begging to get with her included.
    • On the other hand, I still find episodes of TV with people smoking in front of babies shocks me into nervous giggles.
