ARTICLE: Disney+ and Hulu to Remove Dozens of Shows from Platforms, Including ‘Big Shot’ and ‘The Mighty Ducks’

During its earnings call last week, Disney announced plans to remove many streaming shows from Disney+ and Hulu to help mitigate further losses as the company heads into its third quarter.

“We will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion,” said Christine McCarthy, Disney’s chief financial officer during the call with investors. She noted, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation.

Shows expected to be removed from Disney+ include “Big Shot” starring John Stamos (“General Hospital”), “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” starring Josh Duhamel (“All My Children”), “Willow” and “The World According To Jeff Goldblum,” among others. On the Hulu side, the streamer will be saying goodbye to “Y: The Last Man,” “Dollface” and “Love in the Time of Corona,” among others.

It’s understood that while many of these shows are being removed to help Disney’s bottom line, many of them ranked among the least-watched (i.e. churned) on their respective platforms as none of the shows received additional seasons after their first or second season concluded.

Citing Disney’s plans to “produce lower volumes of content,” the shows listed below are confirmed to be exiting both platforms as soon as next week, Friday, May 26, according to a report by Vulture and Deadline.

This is why I loved blu rays and DVDs and still kept some of my favorite shows.
I don’t pay for 13 streaming services to get all my shows. F that. I’m already paying for 5 🤣

Will some of these shows end up on FAST platforms like Tubi, Pluto TV, Roku etc.?

That's likely to happen, but I imagine some of the shows on the list had virtually no viewers. For instance, "Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever (Disney+)" which would only be interesting to music people or those who wanted to learn more about the music from the movie. It's like airing a one-off special in this instance. Why keep it on the platform hogging space when it's only relevance was when the movie hit the streamer.

Ah, I see your point. As for the music of Wakanda Forever, that sounds like something for HooplaDigital where a School of The Arts student can access it for research with a library card, but yeah, not exactly the stuff of subscription drives.
