I had to make a thread for this after catching up with its first short season on HBO Max - it just began its second on Hulu/ABC. Sweet, earnest and very funny. Sheryl Lee Ralph's Emmy is well deserved after so many years of great work, but the entire ensemble crackles and Janelle James steals every scene as Ava.

The Parks and Recreation parallels are interesting in that a lot of fans have twigged the Tariq character as likely becoming a bigger presence a la how Chris Pratt/Andy Dwyer blew up on that show. He clearly has a good heart and is good with the kids whenever volunteering despite also being a layabout idiot. I don't think Zack Fox/Tariq will become as big as Pratt/Andy did on Parks, but I do think there's a fair amount of similarity.

I'm most pleased to see Tyler James Williams in a popular lead role - he's been so, so good as an adult performer on a bunch of shows and he deserved a lasting showcase. But Sheryl Lee Ralph, Quinta Brunson, Lisa Ann Walter, the whole ensemble is great.

OMG! I *heart* Principal Ava. She's so sweet and her heart is always in the right place. Honestly, I never heard of Abbott Elementary until I watched the Primetime Emmys. Usually, when I see that kind of recognition, curiosity courses through these veins of mine. At first, it reminded me of Modern Family, but then I felt the Parks and Recreation side to it since it revolves around the workplace. All in all, Janelle James as Principal Ava Coleman continues to capture my heart.

Ava seemed a bit more competent and on top of things in the premiere. She ran that opening meeting well and was on top of things with Melissa - I think coming through in front of the board has her a bit more dedicated, by Ava standards.

OMG. I came so close to thinking that yesterday's episode was going to be about gun violence in school once I saw and heard those helium balloons pop against the ceiling fan. Anybody else think the same?

      This would be a weird comment to make about the face of the show if it wasn't damn accurate. In the 90s she was mostly confined to her own orbit with her daughters and Cass, aside from a few stories. Her relationship with Rachel was pretty weird too. A case of tell not show. They seemed to be there for each other at big moments (weddings, funerals, etc.) and proclaim how close they were, but rarely interacted outside of those. I only remember one storyline they had together - the Lucas lookalike - but that was more about their significant others' animosity if I'm remembering correctly. In hindsight, it was pretty strange how little Rachel, Felicia & Donna - all around the same age give or take - had to do with each other for the last decade. The actresses were all top-10 in longevity for the entire show and made it to the finish line, but never meaningfully mixed it up at the end. Even Donna dating Rachel's son didn't lead to many interactions between those 2. I can understand JFP's reasoning for getting rid of Donna, even if I didn't agree with it (she was my favorite of the 3).

      It's called being pro-active.. something that soap operas have failed to do in the last twenty to twenty five years. The Duprees are not a compelling family.. .a lot of telling and not showing.  I'm actually more invested in the non-Dupree characters then the Duprees right now.

      I am ready for Joss to take a nice long trip to see her father in Australia and give the character a break and a recast. If the show is hell bent on keeping Eden at least give the girl stories that play to some of EM's strengths.  Dead boyfriends, sex tapes, trying to become a Dr., and now a spy?  None of that works for a character that should be a bitchy, spoiled brat causing trouble in the background.  Not the younger leading heroine.

      Yes. He was asleep in the living room, over in the chair that is sideways to the room, but faces it & he had one of his bad dreams in the exact same way as always & as always it woke him up. Is that a thing? Are there bad dreams that for some reason always wake you?
