Daytime Influence on the Primetime Soaps

We often talk about the Dallas/Dynasty influence on daytime soaps but how about the opposite direction, daytime influence on the 1980s big four primetime soaps.

For example, characters/situations from Y&R being used on CBS's big three primetime soaps, or characters/situations from ABC's big three daytime soaps being used on Dynasty.

Great idea, kalbir!

Jackie Zeman, in the '90s Soap Opera Book of Lists, said GH's story about Lucy agreeing to and then backing out of an arrangement to be Bobbie and Jake's surrogate mother was based on the Baby M drama that unfolded in 1986-87. The storyline was on GH in 1987 (a plot point in the bigger Bobbie/Jake/Lucy/Tony drama). In 1988 it happened with Adam and Dana on Dynasty (a plot point in the bigger Sean Rowan vs. the Carringtons and Alexis drama).

Mmmm... not sure that the primetime shows were looking at daytime for inspiration, apart from using the soap conventions that had been around for decades eg illegitimate children, affairs, amnesia etc

thinking of Y&R's 80's stories I can't offhand remember them being used in someway in primetime.

Nikki faking illness to hold onto Victor

Ashley having an abortion and ending up in amental institution

Jack sexing his stepmother and then being blackmailed

Patty shooting Jack and then not remembering

John and Jill's bitter divorce and her getting part of the Jabot

@Paul RavenMaybe for Y&R some of the big 1970s storylines/characters could have been an influence, ie. Chris/Snapper/Greg triangle, Chris's rape, Leslie/Lorie/Brad triangle, Lorie's parentage, Lance/Lucas/Leslie/Lorie quadrangle. Then again, brothers fighting over a girl, sisters fighting over a guy, heroines that are rape victims, and parentage reveals are classic soap elements. Also Victor's 1980s character arc, introduced as a villain but with the unexpected popularity of the pairing with Nikki, the orphanage backstory, and his other storylines, Victor was more of an anti-hero by the end of the decade.

    • It makes sense that she got a degree in directing. I've always said she should have been a director. I think she works better at the technical aspects of the show. I think her problem is the emotion/heart of a show.  She always guts the heart of the show she's on and she makes decisions that stop longtime viewers from watching a show. I don't think it's sexism to call that out especially as I've said similar things about Conboy. I've called out Rauch for much worse.
    • "Aunt Blanche" first appears toward the end of this episode, about 57 minutes in.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.
    • Of course!

I'm wondering if there were bits cut from this footage, because to me it seems that may be the case. At 11:23, Laurie tells her psychiatrist that the bar phoned and told her Mark got into a fight and needs to be picked up. It starts to fade to the next scene, you hear some different music begin and get cut off between the static, and where you'd expect to see the aftermath of the fight, we cut back to a later scene of Laurie in bed worrying about what's happening. The credits at the end also show that more than Mark, Laurie and Dr. Northcote should have been in this episode. Another character, Brody, played by Ed Setrakian, is mentioned but not shown. If this is the case, perhaps the original fan who saved this episode has the additional scenes.
    • Anyway… It’s a shame that the video that depicted Leticia’s death was removed from YT.

    • Ms. Phelps holds a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, awarded in 1972. At a time when women were underrepresented in directing programs, she was one of the few women in her graduating class. To suggest that she possessed no further talents than completely changing the style of music used on soaps seems like a vast underestimate when one reads her online biography through an objective lens. I guess that I should be more clever than to constantly blame misogyny for these misguided interpretations of her management style.  But, I'll never comprehend why fans unquestionably align their opinions even years after fact. Post-modernism, and the ability to reinterpret context through the study of history, seems to elude this conversation.

    • This is 100% correct.  It was even on the nightly news where the US Government would not let the cast and crew travel to Egypt because it was deemed not safe.  The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on October 7, 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. The location shoot was probably scheduled to be filmed in mid-October to air throughout November with a two week tape to air date.  Remember on the show they did some in studio scenes doubling for Egypt before shifting the action to Arizona.  It was an awkward end to a truly bizarre storyline.
