What to Watch on Streaming (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.)

Not sure if there's a thread on this, but I'm watching Netflix and Hulu more and more, even if it's just for old TV series like Cheers and Hill Street Blues. Plus, today Amazon Prime Video just launched on Apple TV, so I'm more inclined to watch it now. I'm in the market for more suggestions on what to sample. So feel free to post movies, classic TV shows, original series and other little-known titles you enjoy on the streaming sites.

I've been obsessed with this Japanese Netflix reality series titled Terrace House. On its face, it's a typical show about six young and attractive singles living together while looking for love, but it's refreshingly free of the contrived drama and cattiness of American reality series. Like people actually solve conflicts and respect each other like grown-ass adults without sacrificing entertainment value! The real X Factor of the show is a panel of comedians who break into the action from time to time to talk sh!t and provide welcome commentary about the houseguests.

The cast members come and go from the house regularly, so the dynamic stays interesting. And if you have the smallest fascination with Japanese culture and etiquette, it's worth checking out.

The first available season is Boys and Girls in the City set in Tokyo, which is much better than the next season Aloha State in Hawaii. A new season in currently filming in Japan.

I'm a fan of biopics and documentaries, especially related to music. I just finished watching 'Hired Gun' on Netflix, which focuses on studio musicians and many of the artists they've played for over the decades.

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bBXZrCmwZw

It's really done well because it covers a number of generations, everything from Pink! to Metallica and Alice Cooper. There's one artist prominently discussed and it changed my opinion of him.

I highly recommend it.

Very cool! I'll check it out. I like podcasts about musicians telling their own stories like Song Exploder and And the Writer Is..., so this looks right up my alley.

On Netflix, I just started watching the Tom Petty documentary "Runnin' Down a Dream" directed by Peter Bogdanovich. It's long (nearly four hours), but it has some great interviews and performances.

Just saw Paris 5:59: Theo et Hugo, a French gay film on Hulu about two men who hook up at a Paris sex club, and we follow them in real time as they stumble out into the streets dick-drunk and into love. It begins with a long sequence of writhing bodies at the sex club, and it's extremely explicit, but what comes next is more profound, finely observed, and deeply romantic than anything I've seen in recent memory. Highly recommended.

    • Agree. Much more miss than hit. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought clothing was supposed to be flattering. A lot of the Y&R women are seen in the tight solid color dresses ,often with cutouts/one shoulder. Now that may be a fashion but to have all of them in interchangeable dresses... Do the characters have a particular color pallette/style that is unique to them? BTG does a better job in that department. Some recent Y&R looks. I actually like the dress but we see that style too often.   Nikki's new look is not to my liking.
    • The first show I found had Maeve dressed horribly, and I just shook my head and thought she must've been thrilled to be portraying someone much more sophisticated and rich. Vanessa's hats and gloves probably cost more than her AW character's entire wardrobe.
    • It is the least aware sobriety memoir I've ever read. No spoilers, but where was the editor to ask what she learned from all the stories in her life?
    • Well awards like these are certainly different from big name award shows in a few ways but this is an awards show, not a poll. Not the same gravitas, not the same cachet, etc. but an actual awards presentation show is going to happen. We Love Soaps used to have one. The Webbys, etc. various.  But if you are aware of a better place for this to be posted, then say so, but to be clear, NOT A POLL.
    • Ok I just bought Kim's book on Amazon... should be an interesting read.
    • Well, I think she's trying to be funny, and it's technically accurate, if misleading. If you leave out the Sonni part it's "Josh left Reva to (go to) Venezuela shortly before Reva had her miscarriage because of Vanessa." I guess "Josh left Reva after finding out the child she was carrying was his father's, and miscarried because of her drugged out step-daughter-in-law, where he met a woman with split personality..." isn't as "snappy". As for Robert, I thought he clicked with Harley and Annie, not so much Olivia. I'm on the fence about Sonni. Before Reva came to town, he crapped out with Morgan and Hillary, but a) I don't think anyone really had chemistry with Jennifer Cooke, who was not good, and b) I don't think the romance with Hillary was ever much more than filler. (oooh, Josh and Katie might've been cute...) But, after Reva, Josh was never really chem tested with actresses. I know there was some kind of flirtation with Jenna, which still seems odd to me (especially since Jenna was hiding a pregnancy).  But other than Cassie, Josh got involved with other women (from what I recall) when either he was out of town, or Reva was presumed dead. He didn't bust up with Reva and start dating around town.
    • Thanks for the info. Timm was a model for years, so one could speculate he may have done something like nudity etc... that violated CBN's moral clause. He was good in the role. He had an awesome mop of 80's blow dried hair that would rival Ted McGinley.....LOL
    • Before I met Reva, I really did enjoy Josh and Annie. The beginning of their relationship was really cute, the flirting and chemistry was there. I was fully into it, but then I learned who Jeva was and realized it couldn't sustain. I just read a few interviews that Kim gave online, and it's pretty clear she loves her wine, which I love. I'm a wine guy too, so I'm not surprised she had to have a little here and there to get through some things.
    • Opinion polls conducted by soap podcasters are not the same as "soap opera award shows".
