The Green Book writer who tweeted anti-Muslim stuff has apologized. Lots of Oscar campaign rehab going on this week, in addition to Gaga disavowing R. Kelly.

While a lot of the blowback is deserved, it’s always fascinating to watch how rival studios take each other down during Oscar season, especially with stuff that’s already been publicly available but didn’t cause controversy when it originally happened (like the Farrelly penis-flashing admission from 1998, a pre-social media era).

Nate Jones writes about it in Vulture:

I found that line telling: how #metoo has been used not to make Hollywood workplaces safer or more equitable, but instead cynically used as a weapon to exact revenge or cripple enemies.

No Bradley Cooper in Directing is the gag of this morning’s Oscar nominations. It’s funny: the Academy used to love actor/directors (Beatty, Redford, Costner, Gibson). Not so much anymore, with Ben Affleck getting snubbed a few years back for “Argo.”

No Farrelly for Directing for Green Book, but Lanthimos got in for The Favourite.

No Won’t You Be My Neighbor? in Documentary Feature is a big snub.

Roma got two acting noms (for Aparicio and da Tavira), which shows some strength and a willingness to embrace Netflix (along with the surprising nods for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). Lots of fear in the industry that Netflix wants to make them obsolete, of course, but that sentiment could be softening in terms of the awards academies.

Emily Blunt shut out again, this year for two buzzy roles (Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place).

Spike got his first Director nod.

Some of saying that Blackkklansman is well-positioned to take Best Picture.

The Academy’s drive to diversify members in terms of race, gender, and especially nationality means that the results could begin to diverge from the precursor awards, so we’ll see.

It mostly seems to have been nominated just because it made money.

This must be one of the worst years for Oscar frontrunners. Christian Bale seems likely to win for Vice but the movie was panned by many. Green Book seems likely to clean up, yet I have read so many, many, many bad things about the movie and the people who make it.

    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
