Greatest storyline exit (character leaving)

Bill Eckert on GH had a poignant death scene. (I'm talking about how it originally aired, as opposed to what I heard about its apparent retcon years later.) He was shot in mistaken identity for Luke while being uncharacteristically self-sacrificing. He died looking up at Luke and telling him that it was bitter justice that the last face he saw was his own. Bill wasn't that popular a character...he was abrasive plus I think people wanted Geary to be Luke, not Bill. But then when he died, I kind of wished it hadn't happened. Storyline-wise, though, it made sense as Geary was reprising Luke...it not only saved him from long-term double duty but was also totally in keeping with how Luke & Laura's enemies claimed innocent lives around them.
