Disney's Aladdin Live Action Remake

Wanted to start this thread! This is my favorite Disney movie of all time, as it also personally resonates to me & my culture. I grew up with this movie! Guy Ritchie is/has been slated to direct (a HUGE mistake, IMO), and just this past day I've been seeing all this news about how how him & his team have been struggling to find a lead for the role of an Aladdin who "is in their 20s and can act and sing". iMO, there are/could be so many candid peeps. Dev Patel is the obvious choice, but in doing research, there is an abundance of actors both in the US and Bollywood world who could knock it out. What are your thoughts??

I'm so worried about this! If Disney/Ritchie fcks this up, I'll need to go to therapy! They better not mess up Prince Ali & Jasmine!!

Let's hope for the best! Thoughts?? 🙏

Since they're casting unknowns for the leads, they need to bring star power into it. They will fill roles that they can with as many movie stars as possible. I just hope they'd gone for something less... cliche. Less obvious.

Aladdin itself will sell seats. It's a classic. I don't need star quality to endear me to buy a ticket. Nostalgia and good acting will. Will Smith is not gonna be able to capture the magic of Genie like James Monroe Inglehart did on Broadway. His Genie was VERY much like Robin William's version. Plus, James Monroe Inglehart has star quality. The year the musical came out, it got a lot of buzz and he walked away with a Tony.

That will work for you and me. I'll go see it no matter what because it was part of my childhood. And others will too. But it won't be enough for the billion-plus bank they surely aim to make. Look at the difference between Cinderella (which didn't do badly by any means) and Beauty and the Beast, which was jam-packed with very bankable, beloved film stars, way more than Cinderella. A huge part of that is due to the cast. It makes a difference. This is nothing against JMI, don't think I'm knocking him down. In case you didn't see my post earlier, I agree Will Smith is not a good choice. But when they're about to make what they hope to be a smash hit led by minority, unknown actors, that needs to do well worldwide (let alone in the US) you can bet they'll try to get some stars. No question. No doubt. They will not solely rely on nostalgia.

Well I can tell you that Will Smith is not gonna draw people to theaters. Not like he used too unless it was for another Bad Boys or MIB installment. Even then, people are drawn to the theatre for nostalgic reasons.

I truly believe that the Disney name along with it being Aladdin will draw people out in droves to see it. I was gonna go see Beauty & the Beast regardless if Emma Watson was in it.

Sure he will. Along with whatever other famous actors they can fit into the movie, if any. It's the reality of the entertainment business: Big names get more publicity for the movie. Not that people fall over for him anymore. But Smith as Genie will get talked about. He will do every interview on Earth. The promotion will be insane because he will be a recognizable name. He'll act as 'mentor' to those playing Aladdin & Jasmine. You won't be able to switch on anything without seeing him on. Bet. Just watch.

I suppose some do go for nostalgic reasons. I go if I think the movie will be good enough/deserves to be seen on the big screen. If I'm mildly interested in something, an actor/actress I really like may sway me.

You are right. That WILL play a huge part. Disney is Disney. But, like I said, that doesn't make you over a billion dollars.

And a lot of people DID go because of Watson. And McKellen. And Thompson. etc. All these people worked PR like magic. There is no denying it!

Anyway, I'm glad this is moving along (possibly bad choice of director and all). I am dying to see it.

    • Thanks. I'd forgotten about that. It is odd she wasn't asked back. Maybe they just gave up.  Harley/Philip is one of those relationships which lingered on longer than it should have. I never got the sense the show had any great interest in them together beyond the first six months or so, and there was little to no chemistry between them after that point.

    • I am just so happy with the new writing. Everything feels so much more mature. The connections between plots and characters reminds me of the eighties, and I just plain old LIKE everybody. I very much enjoyed Philip's apology tour with his two exes, and both of them being gracious to him. This version of Philip is so interesting, very flawed, but trying to do better, and I do believe he wanted the brother bond with Xander very much and is hoping to get that back. Speaking of brothers, we got Xander's first ever mention of his other brother, Bo. And how interesting that Titan is also working on a cure for sepsis. If the one with Dr Russell falls through we have a back up plan. And the seamless writing continued with Sarah trying to get out of a conference and Kayla needing to get Dr Russell out of town, I love when things just make sense like that. Shout out to Xander with cucumbers on his eyes lol And under the new regime I am not hating Stalex. I think this couple was just hammered by Ron by constantly making them sleep with other people. It was hard to root for them when the writer didn't care about them as a pairing, just about getting Rob naked. I am happy to see what happens here too. Stefan got a get well card to EJ? I wonder if it had a coded HELP ME in the message. Glad Kayla turned him down. She should never forget how he used Steve as a pawn back in the day. Characters are actually remembering this stuff these days.
    • That happens sometimes on cbs/paramount. Just refresh the page and it should work.
    • In a 1997 SOD article, Ehlers mentions that she was asked to return several times, but was surprised she wasn't asked to return for her "mother's" funeral.  This was when she returned for the 60th Anniversary event. They were a really popular pairing for a few years ago.  As an older viewer, it seemed strange seeing Beth as the odd one out, but 1998 Beth was a totally different character.  She was written as a manipulative, vixen.

    • It seems obvious based on the initial material that Korte was going to take another foolish run at Jason and Carly a la 2021 and hoped Mulcahey being back would make it work, as he wrote such famous material for Steve, Sarah, etc. I think a couple good dialogue scenes came out of them together very early on, but there was never any denying that Steve and Laura have never had and will never have any romantic chemistry, plus the audience doesn't want it. So they pivoted to her with that useless dayplayer (Brennan) and now here they all are, spinning their wheels doing nothing of value on the show. I do think PM had planned to do much more with Jason's sons and that rivalry/friction, but once he was gone so was Jake. I've rarely seen any of the core mob 3 feel so totally extraneous and directionless on the canvas. Not that I mind. Anything that makes Jason easier to get rid of works for me.
    • I just edited the 1998 SOD Awards & Laura Wright won Best New Character for Cassie on GL. Also Philip & Harley won something of some name for them as a couple & when they finished saying their effusive thanks at the mic, Grant picked Beth up & literally threw her over his shoulder & walked backstage that way. I mean, it's great that Beth Ehlers is a good sport, right?

    • nothing. The story was put on the backburner while they focused on other stuff. I think thats one of the issues i have with the show in that it sometimes struggles with balance as stories will disappear for weeks and then reappear (Chelsea's throuple for example)
