Ringling Bros closing its tent.

After 145 years or so, Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey circus is coming to an end.   They say they can't make money any more especially with the elephants phased out.  I find the whole thing sort of sad.   There are people being born today who will never see a circus and won't really know what a circus is.  As a kid I can remember seeing Gunther Gebel Williams, and then there was the Michu guy who got married every performance.

I was last at a one ring version of Ringling Bros about five years or maybe ten, when they had a tent set up in Brooklyn.  The elephants thing was wrong, but the whole thing is still sort of sad.

It's a bit sad that an institution like Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus is ending because they've been around so long but the organization, in many was was too slow in adapting to changing times lately.

In NYC, Ringling Bros. also has competition from The Big Apple Circus and The Universoul Circus, both of which are 'leaner' and more nimble organizations able to make adjustments much faster than a sprawling organization like Ringling Bros. For instance, I remember that Universoul Circus had some issues with the animals that they were leasing and the organization that they were leasing them from had complaints from PETA on how the leasing company treated the animals (Universoul does not house/keep animals) and Universoul was said to quickly address the issue.

The Big Apple Circus adjusts its schedule, according to demand, but again, it is a comparatively smaller circus that is used to making changes quickly.

Ringling Bros had some issues with their administration over the years and were pretty much forced to make changes when their ticket sales started to drop (the African American ring master was one, for example). They now have a female ringmaster who barely got in and now they are closing. Sad.

I also have a memory of seeing The Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus as a child when I went to see it at Madison Square Garden, although I don't remember much except that an elephant pooped and it smelled pretty bad. Although it was cleaned up relatively quickly, I was turned off for the rest of the show.

Every time I saw a Ringling Bros. commercial over the years after, I thought about that elephant and as an adult, I started to think about the circumstances that might have caused that elephant to quickly and dramatically drop such a 'load' (were they scared? frustrated? tired...and of what, abuse?). That memory just didn't leave a very good impression on me.

I suspect we would have had a few withdrawals next year if Israel had won. I don't think many people would relish going to Jerusalem as things stand now. Not to mention it would have been a prime target for terrorist attacks.
    • And they've given us plenty. Sets, outdoor scenes, music licensing, etc. And that was the point of me using DAYS... so. It's obvious the casino set is not intended for long-term use, hence why it's likely it wasn't as evolved as the other community sets, etc.

    • I just had thought of how to save the Perkins family. (Inspired by Rituals) -- What if Marisa Perkins was Augusta Lockridge's sister? Fictionally, they could've both been local girls, one married rich and one married poor. Originally, I was going to suggest that Marisa be Sophia's sister, but then I realized Joe and Kelly would've been first cousins.  Of course, it would've truly inspired Sophia was if Rosa Andrade sister, with Rosa and Santana moving in to help CC raise the kids once Sophia disappeared.  While this could've avoided both gross CC and Santana affairs, the times were not right for a story about intersectional inequity.
    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJxW5DLJLId/ Another World is my forever favorite soap opera. But it's finale is almost universally hated by its fans. What this is, is an edit where I've deleted everything I didn't like!!!
    • The Perkins family had potential to be a nice alternative to the more dysfunctional Capwells and wackier Lockridges... but I think a few factors did in the family. 1) Recasting of Joe Perkins 2) Bad casting of the Perkins Patriarch, and the one note writing for that character. 3) Lack of antagonistic interaction between the Capwells/Lockridges and Perkins.  (There was no awkwardness between Jade/Ted.. or CC disapproving of his son being friends with that Perkins girl, etc). 4) Wasting of Jade thus wasting the potential of the actress (which was realized on Days of Our Lives).  She had more potential than Laken oddly enough. The only member of the Perkins family that had appeal and a somewhat thought out story arc was Amy.
    • @GymnastGuyThanks for posting the three new Capitol 1985 episodes today. The two labeled March 12, and 13 are misidentified. The March 12 labeled one actually aired November 12 1985 which I figured out because Kenny Rogers' movie Wild Horses aired November 12th and it was announced over the "March 12" Cap credits. In addition, Craig Carlson is listed in the April credits but not the March. Craig left Capitol sometime after July 1985 before he rejoined OLTL in the credits by October 15, 1985; he was replaced on Cap by Radcliffe and Hamner. In these posted episodes Radcliffe/Hamner names appear in the March 85 episodes but not in the April.
