Even though she was a meddler, Lucinda was a far better mother than Althea. Lucinda made sure to keep tabs on her kids whether they liked it or not. For a doctor, Althea can be pretty clueless - especially when she is hoodwinked by her troublemaking teenage daughter, Penny (played by a pre-Newhart Julia Duffy).

Retro TV recently aired a scene between Althea and Penny that was no holds barred, and Liz and Julia Duffy absolutely rocked it. There were no campy catfights, and it was very subdued. Liz's facial expressions perfectly captured the heartbreak Althea felt when her daughter verbally ripped her up one side and down the other. It was very much like Mildred Pierce.

Penny (as played by Julia Duffy, and before her, Jami Fields) is like a cross between Veda Pierce and Rhoda Penmark (The Bad Seed). Both actresses excelled at bringing those facets into Penny's personality.
