The articles say "Mo-AH-na". Besides, Mona doesn't sound particularly South Pacific, so I'm going with the other interpretation

Some stills from the movie. It's a bit spoilerish but it looks very exciting. I hope it's good!

This does look interesting. Having grown up with the Maori version of Maui, I'm actually kind of excited to see how he is depicted by Disney (and Dwayne Johnson of course). I am assuming Maui will be mainly based on the Hawaiian mythology (which is fair enough) though they may incorporate other traditions into the character.
