Radio Soap Opera Discussion

The book mentions this ending of a Ma Perkins episode as an example of soaps not getting the credit they deserved for quality writing.

They talk about the radio soaps being belittled in the early 40s for not trying to discuss topical issues, and barely even mentioning the war. This leads to pointing out such things that male characters were wounded, sometimes even killed, in action, that characters talked about patriotism, and saving fat and tinfoil, buying war bonds. Bachelor's Children was broadcast in Spanish to Latin America to try to increase solidarity. Sometimes war heroes or Army officers were introduced in soap episodes, for patriotism or to sell war bonds. Eleanor Roosevelt suggested a bond purchase during an episode of The Story of Bess Johnson.

Here's the start of an episode of Rosemary, after ten seconds of theme music, which Rosemary interrupts.

During the war the government suggested that soaps tell stories about improving race relations (to help soldiers learn this) and learning what to do in a medical emergency (in case there was ever fighting on American soil). After the war ended, the government was less involved in advising soaps or suggesting stories, but some soaps still went on with ideas. A Rosemary episode had Rosemary and her mother visiting a young couple who had just had their first child.

I'm glad you read through all that. I wasn't sure if anyone could. So you got something out of it then? I have to admit I thought some of it, like the bit from Ma Perkins, was beautiful, and true to life.

I like the idea of radio soaps too. It's a shame these died in the US long ago. The UK managed to keep them going.

Have you looked up Guiding Light radio in Youtube? You will get about 5-6 episodes or more.

Yes absolutely! I would love too, but I'm just never sure where to find it...And whenever I find like one episode of something, I always get pissed when I can't get the rest because I want to know what happens?

Do you know where I could find it?

Yes! Thank you Carl. You post the most fascinating articles. I could just sit and read through them for hours...Hell, I did! (That's the one benefit to having a cold!)

Yeah, it's a shame radio soaps died here. I can't imagine they're that expensive...I could get behind a reboot of them. I'm surprised no one has launced any on Sirius XM or anything.

No, I haven't looked up GL...But I think I'm going to. I've heard nothing but good things!

April 1953 Radio TV Mirror's Daytime Diary section.

Right to Happiness

Resuming his administration as governor under difficult circumstances, Miles Nelson's personal life is also strained as he and Carolyn cannot seem to resolve the tension that alienates them. Carolyn is well aware that Miles' distrust of her is the result of Annette Thorpe's careful maneuvers, but although she continues bravely to defend herself she wonders if Annette's wiles will triumph.

Thanks Carl for "The Right to Happiness" synopsis. It's a shame this show never transitioned to television. I wonder how long Carolyn's story could have continued in the television medium and if she would accumulate any more husbands.

In terms of the story, I don't know how far behind the Radio Times is in their summaries. The previous summer, Carolyn Nelson had been locked away in a mental hospital. Carolyn and Miles had toured the facility and Carolyn had caught on to some of the facilities shadier operating practices. The people behind the facility had locked her away and planned to kill her. Carolyn was saved by Dwight Kramer, her former husband. During Carolyn's stay in the institution, Annette Thorpe claimed Carolyn knew she and Miles weren't meant to be and had left town. I don't think Annette knew about the hospital scheme, but its possible she did. However, this summary seems to be from Carolyn's homecoming when it was clear Annette was meddling to come between the Nelsons.

There are a couple of episodes at the Internet Archive, including the show's final episode. Unforunately, the final episode seems to be missing the last few minutes. The final scene was between Carolyn and her latest husband, Lee, talking about 'the right to happiness.' When it was uploaded on another site, this scene was included. I don't know what happened.

Final Episode:

December 1954 RTM.

Every aspect of Carolyn Nelson's life underwent severe strain while her husband was Governor, and at the close of his term she was more relieved than regretful to go back to private life. Does Miles share her feelings? Or does he miss his prestige and eminence enough to take a dangerous chance to regain them - a chance that may lead to more trouble than even Carolyn suspects?

Irna Phillips created "The Right to Happiness" as a spinoff of "The Guiding Light." Philips transplanted Rose Kransky to the new serial with her mother and her brother. They were only the focus for a few months before they were sent back to "The Guiding Light." "Happiness" focused on the story of Carolyn, a young woman who spent nearly twenty years, and four husbands, looking for her 'right to happiness.' When the show moved from Chicago to New York, Phillips left the show and John M. Young took over as headwriter. Young assumed the writing duties in December 1942 as his script collection is available at Cornell's library. He penned the show until it was cancelled. He also wrote the final months of "From These Roots", wrote a few episodes of "Days of our Lives," and created "Golden Windows."

After Miles left office, he was involved with Sherry Wayne. Sherry was a wealthy woman who suspected someone was trying to murder her. Wayne did end up dead and Miles did investigate. When he got close to the truth, he ended up dead.

What I like about these Radio Times synopses is it gives a sense of pacing and when things occurred. Once Radio Times was discontinued, it is hard to find information about the soaps.

    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
