Have been enjoying re-watching the SoapNet run. When you have one of those not-so-great days, it's nice to come home at the end of it and forget about everything by watching Sharlene tell Russ that Josie is his daughter. Aunt Liz comes in and just rips Sharlene a new one! Plus Donna and Vicky are scheming to keep her and Jamie together now that the paternity test revealed him to be Steven's dad. I'm hoping I can continue to find the SoapNet run and many thanks to all of the collectors and owners of these classic soaps who share them.

I’ve been reading the AWHP recaps and watching the 1979-1982 episodes available on YT, and I’ve got to say, Russ treated Sharlene very badly (not that her worthless brother Willis - were there ANY Frames other than Steve and Frankie and Dean who didn’t blame the world for their problems - or spineless Sharlene herself helped matters any), but his life just got worse and worse afterwards.

Did he really have two wives pass away one after the other?

I’m not sure I even want to watch the hatchet job they’ll do to poor Russ to justify poor pathetic heroine Sharlene keeping Josie from Russ, given I’m already seeing it being laid down pretty thick with Sharlene vs. Rachel regarding Sharlene’s crazy sister (ran in the family) Janice, who tried to kill Mac (and Rachel and Mitch).

I’m literally stopping myself from yelling at YouTube, “Screw you, Sharlene! And your brother Jason too!”

He was married to that irritating Janice Lynde character (sorry Janice) and then I think he was briefly involved with Olivia Delaney before he left Bay City? I can't remember if he had another dead wife in this time frame. I know the wife he was married to before Sharlene died.

It haven't seen those episodes in ages but I don't remember them making Russ look too awful in how he treated Sharlene. There were made up flashbacks of Russ throwing money at Sharlene (were those made up?) but the writing was somewhat sympathetic to him and saved Sharlene's biggest fury for Aunt Liz. The main issue I had with the story is that it just felt pointless, as Russ didn't stay around long and Josie had few ties to the Matthews. The only good thing about it for me was his daughter Olivia, who was obviously a plot device character, but one I adored, thanks to Alison Hossack.

I am trying to remember if there were scenes in the original episodes of Russ having rough sex with Sharlene and treating her like a prostitute, or if I have made that up.

I wish Laurie Heineman's Emmy submission reel was available.

There was Tracy, who almost raised Matthew with Russ until Mac decided at the last minute he wanted to raise Matthew himself. *facepalm* MAC... really?

Back to Tracy, Jason Dunlap was apparently responsible for her death because he was trying to kill Russ but got Tracy instead.

I’ve read that Sharlene (played by LH) was afraid of him, but he also couldn’t bring himself to hurt her either... it was all pre-reformed Willis’s fault, he was the one who told Russ about Sharlene’s past and then had the nerve to be remorseful about it only after the irreparable damage had been done...

Seriously, what was up with that generation of Frames? Even Jamie barely escaped that legacy of blaming everyone but themselves for their issues.

Tracy was the Janice Lynde character, yes.I remember reading about the Tracy and Jason stuff and later Jason with Elsa and the mob (this was on AWHP of course) and it all read much more interesting than it played out. What an odd and dry period that was for the show. I'm still surprised Jason lasted as long as he did, although the actor brought some verve to the role.

When I think about Willis I wonder who it was who decided to reform the character. Didn't they decide to because they lost Steve? I can't remember.

I guess Vince was an OK guy...from the bits I've seen, anyway.

The most of I’ve actually seen of Willis so far (yet hope springs eternal) is the temporary Iris attacking him because she couldn’t get at the already-dead Janice after Brian (the Only Sane Person in Bay City for several years) told them what happened in St. Croix.

Was Willis recast at some point? Maybe if so, a softer actor would have necessitated a change of heart in the character?

    • As I said in May, I have no problem with Martin and Bradley being married. You can still do all the fun introloper storylines with them as you do everyone else. Both men of a certain age, and it is very believable for them to have either a first love or have been previously married. And, you can do it without either of them cheating!

I said something similar during the premiere week. Bill was the perfect age to play Martin as Vernon and Anita's child. I would've much preferred this version, but oh well.
    • I don't know how you want to count Maeve. She "retired" in '00, but would come back for appearances. I don't know however if she made an appearance in '01 or '03. In '02 I believe she came back for Josh and Reva's wedding. I assume she came back when Gina Tognoni took over the role of Dinah. And I know she was back for Ross' memorial service. Maureen Garrett was around until at least '00. I don't think Holly was in town when Ben returned though. I just got pissed off about Jerry all over again.
    • So, pretty sure Zaslow, Garrett, Kinkead, and Newman all chose to leave the first time. (If that's wrong, please correct me). Bernau - not sure why he left the first time. Was it voluntary? Or did they decide to write him out? They were writing so many out during that time period. It always seemed odd to me that they introduced Alex, FINALLY giving him someone he could talk to, and then he was written out. Or maybe that's why they made Alex his sister, so she could take his place as the head of the Spaulding family? Would love more intel on that if anyone knows. Simon - was he replaced by RVV? Or did he voluntarily leave the first time? It seems to me like one of those times TPTB decided to sex up or glamorize a character (and it clearly flopped). If he was fired, interesting he came back. Again, would love if someone could spill the tea. Clarke - I've always assumed he left because of his personal issues, but not sure if that was the case the first time.
    • So Doug just leaves Vanessa there with Joey? He's a f*cking loser. Vanessa needs to divorce his arse
    • Tina Sloan tied Jerry VerDorn record when Guiding Light was cancelled - 26 years uninterrupted
    • Very true...but TPTB all were desperate to get into prime time or films and couldn't, so they looked down on their own industry and tried to infuse themes that just didn't work in soaps. I would have thought after 9/11 the shows would have gone out of their way to provide that warmth and comfort that the audience wanted, and to bring old viewers back. Budget cuts? Just bring back kitchen sets, both ATWT and GL got rid of those besides one each..(the Snyders and the Bauers) You don't need super fancy sets if you have the writing.
    • LMAO they didn't

    • LY has a job on another show. She's going to be on the Legally Blonde prequel "Elle"
    • From what I can put together, the 1980s had several actors with interrupted runs. Michael Zaslow: 1971-1980, 1989-1997 Maureen Garrett: 1976-1980, 1988-?, ?-end Christopher Bernau: 1977-1984, 1986-1988 Peter Simon: 1981-1984, 1986-1996, ?-end Maeve Kinkead: 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-end Robert Newman: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end Jordan Clarke: 1983-1987, 1989-1993, 1996, 1997-end By 1989, I believe the longest-tenured cast member without a departure was Jerry verDorn.
    • I know they were popular, but once they tamed Van's shrew, I thought Billy just brought Van down. Since they had just Nola and Billy sitting around in 97, an interesting thing would be if they had developed a friendship that turned into something else while Van was "dead". Maybe Billy lives at the Boardinghouse (to work on repaing his relationship with Bill) and works at Company instead of the stupid diner. Nola and Bridget give him a job there and Nola and Billy (who had originally been a bit antagonistic) slowly build up a relationship and then Van returns. A returned new lease on life Van would return to her "high hat ways" and take on the Spaulding's for control of the company with Billy helping her behind the scenes.  I know that Jordan was on sporadically because of his issues and them not know if they could trust him not to fall of the wagon, but they could have done it slow..and give Van and Nola a new reason to get in each others hair (I love a good Van/Nola tussle.)
