Here's a great YouTube find. Another World, Christmas 1984. The episode has the orignal MJ and Vince Mckinnon, Ben McKinnon, Donna and Marly (pre-Vicky), the Corys, terrible Blaine recast, the Ewings, the Matthews (including Alice), Cass, Wally and Felicia. It's a pretty good episode.

Ever since finishing Harding Lemay's book, I have really wanted to get into Another World. It is hard to find a starting point. I was wondering, did Jamie Frame and Dennis Carrington keep their close friendship over the years. I hate it when Soaps loose out on building on childhood relationships as young characters are SORASD at different rates.

When Dennis returned to the show briefly in 1989, he and Jamie had a warm greeting, I think. Then in 1991, when Dennis returned for a few years, he had a happy meeting with Jamie, but I'm not sure if that lasted, since Jamie's fiance Marley broke up with him in part to be with Dennis.

The timing of seeing this is funny because I was just reading the part of the book that says: "We dismissed the two winning adolescent actors who played Rachel and Iris's sons, and hired other five years older, without aging the actresses who played their mothers. The humorous comradership which had endeared Jamie and Dennis to older audiences was no longer appropriate to the earnest young men who would attract older viewers." Not definitive but it seems their close bond was somewhat dissolved.

It is truly a fascinating read; part of it is his total, clearly stated hatred for soap opera and his disdain for anything melodramatic. He repeatedly says how much he hated writing for a soap but acknowledges his determination to do something good with the format and his eventual absolute immersion in the process of the writing. He describes a lot of his stories and characters and, even the more melodramatic ones he wrote towards year six or so, sound better than anything today.

I would kill to be able to see his runs on the show.

After they were aged, more of their stories were about fighting over a woman (Cecile), but I think they were still close.

I lost interest towards the end of the book, but the best parts for me were when he talked about his relationship with Irna Phillips, and then when he talked about how he got hooked on writing for the characters.

The book was so fascinating, and I agree, the end was the hardest part to get through. He is very unapologetic in his portrayal of some of the stars. Like the actress that played Mary Mathews! My gosh, you would have thought her to be the devil incarnate based on how he eviscerates her character.

He is not too subtle in how he dismisses the actors he felt weren't strong enough, or unselfish enough. Unfortunately I think that he and Rauch and their choices for those who were unworthy ultimately destroyed the fabric of the show.

I think what destroyed ANOTHER WORLD was a lack of permanence. Harding Lemay's assessment of character over melodrama was spot-on; however, what he and Paul Rauch failed to grasp was that there are certain things about any soap (characters, families, and so forth) that viewers consider sacrosanct. As Nancy Curlee once said, whenever things get too tough for either character or audience member to bear, you hope that you could run up the back porch steps and find someone like Nancy Hughes or Bert Bauer waiting in the kitchen with a fresh batch of cookies. You don't want to think they're actually breathing their last on someone's patio on Good Friday.

He is very critical of Courtney in novel for her acting abilities and inability to memorize lines. This was obviously something that she carried with her to OLTL as Bob Woods once mentioned you could never shake her hand because she had the script written between her fingers. I noticed he goes on that Alice was played by a more capable actress who could act what he wrote, but did not go on about her by name. Figuring that Courtney was extremely popular, I could not forsee the recast having been well accepted.

It was to my relief that one of my favorite actresses, Susan Sullivan, is portrayed in a very good light in the novel.

Personally, I never understood Jacquie Courtney's appeal to viewers. She was too milquetoast even for a character that was SUPPOSED to be everybody's beloved virginal heroine. OTOH, though, I think Lemay and Rauch were far too willing to dismiss her, if only because, like it or not, viewers cared about her and wanted her to stay put.

She had incredible charisma. Her scenes with Rachel in the 25th anniversary just overpower with old school star power and pathos. I don't see it as much on OLTL, but I do in her AW appearances. I also think that there was a certain offbeat casting in such a masculine actress playing the long-suffering heroine.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
