Plot: After moving to San Francisco, the middle-aged New Yorker, Harvey Milk, became a Gay Rights activist and city politician. On his third attempt, he was elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors in 1977, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the USA. The following year, both he and the city's mayor, George Moscone, were shot to death by former city supervisor, Dan White, who blamed his former colleagues for denying White's attempt to rescind his resignation from the board. (from imdb.com)

Starring- (from wiki)
Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the protagonist of the film.
Emile Hirsch as Cleve Jones, a supporter of Milk's campaign.
James Franco as Scott Smith, Milk's lover.
Josh Brolin as Dan White, Milk's fellow politician-turned rival.
Victor Garber as Mayor George Moscone, the then-mayor of San Francisco.
Denis O'Hare as Senator John Briggs; Ashlee Temple as Dianne Feinstein; Diego Luna as Jack Lira; Eric Stoltz as Tom Ammiano; Lucas Grabeel as Danny Nicoletta

Who Is Mr. Milk?-
Harvey Milk
People told him no openly gay man could win political office.
Fortunately, he ignored them

After Harvey Milk became the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet, thousands of astounded people wrote to him. "I thank God," wrote a 68-year-old lesbian, "I have lived long enough to see my kind emerge from the shadows and join the human race." Sputtered another writer: "Maybe, just maybe, some of the more hostile in the district may take some potshots at you — we hope!!!"

It's amazing how many people I know DON'T know the Harvey Milk story. I also like that, while some worried this would be yet another noble "gay men die" gay movie, the trailer largely emphasizes the joy and humour. Gus Van Sant can be a brilliant director when he wants to--I'm glad it looks like he's put a lot of effort into this

So did you all see this yet? I went out and saw it last weekend. I'll reserve comments until I hear from the rest of you.

Absolutely fantastic movie. I thought it was very well done. Sean Penn did an awesome job as did all the actors. I remember that time very well. Living in southern Ca, we didn't get all the details on Milk. But I remeber Prop 6 and all that stuff, Anita Bryant etc. It's funny how history seems to be repeating itself (Prop 8) I guess some people never learn that civil rights are afforded to all US citizens.

This movie should get major awards.

I just saw it today and thought it was absolutely fantastic. Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and especially James Franco gave excellent performances. I was surprised at just how involving the film was- I was totally into it. One minor quibble though- the Jack character will drive you INSANE!
