I remember that ad!

KL's finale was the best of the four. Not just because they tied up all loose ends, but also because they brought back JVA/Val and DM/Abby, two actresses who had been integral parts of its' identity.

Knots Landing final season overlapped with 90210 high school graduation season and Melrose first season.

The following season we saw peak 90210, Melrose take off, and new drama NYPD Blue and those would have made Knots Landing look old school so Knots Landing ending when it did was for the best.

I could have done without the final four seasons though as I found them a chore to get through, mainly because Paige practically ate the show. I feel the final four seasons happened because CBS was in their third place primetime mess era for two of them and in the other two CBS really didn't have much success with launching new dramas.

The first season felt like wealthy Waltons in modern day California wine country. Perhaps Earl Hamner did not want to go Dallas with grapes/James Bond hybrid but for all we know that could have been CBS mandated.
Apparently someone at CBS did not like the war crimes storyline and that lead to its abrupt ending, which derailed all the momentum that was built during the course of the series and signs of tanking starting showing. The final five seasons we saw so many changes in direction, going from Dallas with grapes/Miami Vice hybrid (if you can't beat the new hotness might as well join it) to a high octane action-packed thrill ride and then off the rails. There's also the factors of Dallas weakening as a lead in, CBS being in their third place primetime mess era, and budget mode.

To be fair, it sounds like the production of the first season was a mess due to strikes and then the break between the first and second was filled with quite a bit of uncertainty due to turn-over of the brass. So I think his attitude stems from that.

GH: May 2026 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I know we've discussed Eden before and thought the show should give up on her and give the character a rest. This story feels like they might head that way for the first time. It seems like it would be very difficult to have Joss go back to normal life after being super spy and lying to everyone for the last few years.
Writing her out to visit Jax sounds like a great idea. I am sure there is an actress more capable out there.

GH: May 2026 Discussion Thread

The show should cut its losses with Eden/Joss. A few months ago, someone on the board mentioned that she's basically Sydney Sweeney (one note and range as a skill set) without the baggage and the description fit her like a glove. I'll acknowledge that GH leaves a lot to be desired with how characters are written, especially the women who often lack warmth or complexities. But it just isn't in the actress to make a large portion of the audience relate to Joss. And it's been years. She's been cold to the touch for years at the expense of the younger set. Carly Jr. was always going to be a hard sell but she's been in one flop story and pairing after another. This WSB story has to be the worst. Joss is an heiress-- not a killer or spy.
I'd write Joss off to visit Jax in Australia and then bring her back in a year with a new actress who has the magnetic pull/acting abilities of Rory Gibson.

Thank you very much. Better late than never. If you have any questions or want to share some insight of your own, I'm all ears.
Laurelton hasn't completely broken me, but I'm awful close to the edge. I'm glad I've only got two more weeks left, but annoyed that it's two more weeks.
Buzz has been one of the big surprises in my viewing. Talk about a character who could have flourished during the Labine era. And yes, even though I grew up with Mary the good fairy-era Lila, I adore her when she's got bite.
I wish GH had done more with Mrs. McCormack's death, but it was mostly there to further Laurelton and Sean/Monica/Alan. I guess the show will return to the topic of journalistic ethics next year with the Duke/Carmelia story. "Here" in 1986, I'm assuming the hospital won their lawsuit.
