What happened to Fox entering the soap business?

I could have swore I read that they were going to start producing soaps and already 3 soaps ready to go. One called "Born in the usa", a spinoff of the UK's Eastenders, & one by the people who make American Idol.

Was the plan dropped?

Did the product suck?

Was falling ratings for other soaps make them think twice?

I think they would have used the 3-7 time period to air their soaps. Which I think would have been successful.

Does anyone know what happened?

Or did I just miss the newsflash?

nothing really happened, because nothing really started.

as far as i know it was just a bunch of talk. i dont think they actually made a pilor or anything.

it prob had to do with MyNetworkTV failing at soaps and current syatime soaps pretty much about to get the ax.

tho id kill to see Fox air Days at 7pm.

That's too bad cause I think that A Martinez was a lead character in "Born in the USA".

The US version of eastenders would have sucked and the one that 19 entertainment was developing had the best chance of making it on the air because of it's affiliation with the American Idol PTB.

I think that FOX could still do it if they had 1 soap at 3pm, 1 soap at 4pm, News at 5 & 5:30, & then a soap at 6pm. Then the primetime shows would start at their normal time right after the 6pm soap.

They would really have no serious competition in those timeslots. With exception of Ellen and Rachel Ray, I could see it pay off very well.

What happened to Fox entering the soap business? Rupert Murdoch heard about the idea, laughed his ASS off, called the head of the Fox network up to his lair office, berated him repeatedly and in no uncertain terms, that FOX DOESN'T WASTE MONEY ON SOAPS. Not when we're producin' the #1 reality show in the US, you sheep-shagger. Now piss off and do your f*ckin' job!

Or so I would imagine.

If it was gonna be a primetime soap it would have failed. If u look on imdb.com and look up Born in The USA. It clearly has a cast too large for Primetime. A Martinez and Diego Serreno as primetime leads.....uh no this show was meant for daytime. Maybe another show was created for primetime that also didn't make the cut.

Also I was confused, this show was by the makers of American Idol, 19 entertainment and was produced by Simon Fuller.

"Born in the U.S.A." was a nighttime soap. A pilot was filmed, but it was never ordered. The initial announcement said the show could be aired several times a week, but the show was primetime

I know when MyNetworkTV was trying to find an affiliate in Boston, the FOX affiliate said they would air the telenovelas in the 1-3 daytime period if an affiliate couldn't be found. I wonder if there are affiliates out there interested in airing soaps?

I would say the plan was probably dropped due to the low viewership of MyNetworkTV, which is too bad since the final round of novelas were top notch.

    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
    • Funny I randomly saw Kami’s lengthy post about the 44th anniversary of the Walton’s finale last week pop up in my news feed on Facebook. A few inaccuracies to her post but overall it was pretty insightful and interesting to read.
    • Well, depending on rewrites...Jennifer Richards potentially slept with Brandon and Alan. It does feel like we're forgetting someone, but then again, maybe I'm confusing that with brothers, which would include a lot more.
    • Maybe it’s me, and the fact that RC isn’t at the helm, but since Cwikly and Ford have taken over I’ve noticed the show doing a lot of things differently directing wise, and since the storyline of John’s demise began, the show has been using different scores, and dare I say better ones than this time last year. It’s interesting and I wonder if the any of it is Noel Maxam’s influence before being promoted.
    • I think Nicole is about to figure out what's going on between Andre and Dani.
    • @Efulton thank you. I don't know how I missed it or didn't recall it.  I'll blame amnesia . Anyway @Errol Could the newer thread be merged to the existing? Thanks in advance.
    • I just finished watching and I have to admit, not once did I find myself wondering who wasn't there. Quick question for anyone who followed this better than I did: was it only Andrew who rescued Cat and John from Clyde, or was Shane involved too? The reactions during their scenes today felt a little off to me. I know it was meant to be vague, but I didn't find it strange that they already knew each other.
    • Yeah, financially, Luna is in better shape than Deacon and Sheila.   -- Scott Clifton must have decided to chew the scenery in every scene of this "Liam is Dying" storyline. Yikes.
    • If J.R. wasn't busy with Ewing Oil, he'd be a heckuva soap recapper. He was SO gleeful at recapping Jenna-Bobby-Pam when the trio and Mark encountered each other at the Oil Baron's Ball. That being said, Lucy, presumably Sue Ellen and maybe Ray should all know this story, or at least part of it. Lucy was definitely at Southfork during Jenna and Bobby's relationship, and I believe Sue Ellen was about to marry J.R. around the time Jenna jilted Bobby. (Ray might not have given a damn.)
