Michelle Stafford Talk About Emmy Judging

It looks like Stafford was a judge this year. I agree with her, just because you're a good crier, that doesn't warrant a nomination. I don't know if she's covering up CBS' ass or just telling the truth, but what she said about the tapes has some merit.

CBS sweep of Emmy noms causes a lather

A deserving Nancy Lee Grahn of 'General Hospital' didn't get a Best Actress nod.

The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday - and they were chock-full of surprises.

The biggest?

A virtual CBS sweep of the soap categories, including all five actresses up for Outstanding Lead Actress: Crystal Chappell (Olivia, "Guiding Light"), Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, "The Young and the Restless"), Nicole Forester (Cassie, "GL"), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, "Y&R") and last year's winner, Maura West (Carly, "As the World Turns").

"I'm totally honored, but I'm bummed out Nancy Lee Grahn [Alexis, "General Hospital"] isn't there," says Stafford, nominated for the seventh time (she's won twice). "Nancy is always phenomenal."

Not a single ABC actress was nominated in any category, which some in the industry question. The new nominating system of submitting three actors from every show meant the judges had to watch up to 27 tapes. Speculation is that not all the judges watched all the tapes, but simply voted for their network.

Since CBS has four soaps to ABC's three and NBC's one, that could partly explain the shutout.

But Stafford, who judged one of the acting categories, says no.

"It's the luck of the tapes," she says. "Some years you have a lot of story, but it doesn't necessarily work on your Emmy reel. I'm not a big fan of submitting crying stuff for myself, but a lot of people did that this year. When [a judge] gets 21 CDs of crying, screaming women, they might go with something opposite."

And the other nominees are...

Lead Actor: Peter Bergman (Jack, "Y&R"), David Canary (Adam, "All My Children"), Anthony Geary (Luke, "GH"), Christian J. LeBlanc (Michael, "Y&R"), Thaao Penghlis (Tony/Andre, "Days of Our Lives").

Supporting Actress: Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren, "Y&R"), Judi Evans (ex-Bonnie/Adrienne, "Days"), Kelley Menighan Hensley (Emily, "ATWT"), Gina Tognoni (Dinah, "GL"), Heather Tom (Katie, "The Bold and the Beautiful").

Supporting Actor: Daniel Cosgrove (Bill, "GL"), Trent Dawson (Henry, "ATWT"), Brian Kerwin (Charlie, "One Life to Live"), Greg Rikaart (Kevin, "Y&R"), Kristoff St. John (Neil, "Y&R").

Younger Actress: Vail Bloom (Heather, "Y&R"), Jennifer Landon (ex-Gwen, "ATWT"), Rachel Melvin (Chelsea, "Days"), Emily O'Brien (Jana, "Y&R"), Tammin Sursok (Colleen, "Y&R").

Younger Actor: Darin Brooks (Max, "Days"), Bryton McClure (Devon, "Y&R"), Van Hansis (Luke, "ATWT"), Tom Pelphrey (ex-Jonathan, "GL"), Jesse Soffer (ex-Will, "ATWT").

Outstanding Drama Series: "GL," "GH," "OLTL" and "Y&R."

"The Daytime Emmy Awards" air live from L.A. on Friday, June 20, on ABC.

Considering all the CBS nods, that should be fun.

COMINGS AND GOINGS: Jason Cook (ex-Shawn, "Days") will play a physician with a secret past on "GH" in June. This reunites him with his former "Days" co-star Kirsten Storms (ex-Belle; now Maxie on "GH"). Tamlyn Tomita ("The Joy Luck Club") is also joining "GH" as Giselle, a magazine rival of Kate's.... Speaking of "Days," Ross the Intern from "The Tonight Show" pops up in Salem on May 14.

Susan Haskell is returning to "One Life to Live" as Marty after a 10-year absence. Kevin Spirtas (ex-Craig, "Days") joins "OLTL" as a character with ties to the returning Tina.... Sydney Penny (Julia) is on her way out at "All My Children."... Also exiting is Seamus Dever, who last airs as evil Dr. Devlin next week on "GH."

DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL: Dixie returns to haunt Pine Valley today on "AMC," played again by Cady McClain.

Sorry I'd buy that if we didn't already know that people weren't watching the tapes anyway

There was obviously a lot of block voting done. There were some actors from all ABC shows who deserved to be nominated. I mean, in what universe can even the best Nicole Forrester reel beat even the worst Nancy Grahn reel? I've read that the blue ribbon panel who will now get the tapes to decide the winner is made up of mostly non-daytime people who pretty much spend their time laughing at the "melodramatic" and "overwrought" performances. Taken out of context, a lot of the acting, even from the best daytime actors, can come off as hysterical and over the top.

I had no idea they even submitted tapes for pre-noms...now i'm wondering what they all submitted.

I've read several times that the winner was chosen at the same time as the Pre-Noms. Who ever got the highest votes there is the winner.

Maybe things are different now, but I know that's what happened in the past. One big daytime actress, might've been Dee Hall, mentioned that one year she was the only daytime member of the blue ribbon panel deciding the winners, and most of the panel sat there making fun of the nominated actors and of the nominated shows.

There is no blue ribbon panel this year. The winner's already been decided based on the pre-nom votes.
