DAYS: Writing staff returns 4/23/08

"Days of Our Lives" airs its first episode written since the WGA strike ended on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. As previously announced, Dena Higley, who was head writer of "Days" from March-August 2003, is the new head writer. In another change "Days" has dropped its breakdown writing positions (those who write the geenral storylines of each episode). That job will now be done by Higley and new co-head writer Victor Gialanella, who was with "Days" from 1995-2006. The six dialogue writers are: Rick Draughon, who was with "Days" from 2000-2006; John S. Newman, who was with "Days" from 2003-2004; and four holdovers that were with the show when the strike began: Bettina Bradbury, Renee Godelia, Cydney Kelley and Jodie Scholz. Bradbury will be leaving the series soon. "Days" had been "writer-less" due to the strike for 63 episodes, from January 25-April 22, 2008.

HEAD WRITER BIOGRAPHY

Dena Anne Breshears Higley first joined the "Days" staff in 1985 and stayed with the show for over 19 years until November 2004, including a short stint as head writer from March 7-August 15, 2003. From 2004-2007, she was the head writer of "One Life to Live." Higley has been Emmy-nominated six times (five during her last stint at "Days", in 1987, 1994, 1997, 1998, and 1999, and once for "One Life to Live" in 2006). She was born September 26, 1958 in Tulare, California and is married to former "Days" writer Mark Christopher Higley. They have four children: Connor "CK" (1988), Jensen (1990), Helio (1994; adopted from Ethiopia), Adelle (1996; adopted from Vietnam). Tenure: 1985-November 26, 2004; April 23, 2008-Present.

He has been nominated for four Daytime Emmys (three nominations while at "Days" in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and winning once in 1986 for "Guiding Light"). Gialanella was born on October 29, 1949 in New Jersey. He still resides there with his wife, Cindy, and daughters Alicia (1996) and Rebecca (1999). Kyle, be honest: are you just dropping some names here as well as in some other topics? :P If you can write me a, say, 5 paragraphs post about AMC writers and their trademarks, I can take this post seriously. Otherwise...

If tomorrow is the first show written by Higley, why has everyone been going off lately that she is already ruining the show? Anyways, I hope with a writing staff back in place that we continue to see the emphasis of the show on the pivotal characters that we care about and the balance that we have seen lately continues. If it does then I will continue to watch.

    • John loved Sami unconditionally and forever
    • On May 27, Johnny spoke to Sami on the phone, and learned that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes. As discussed on the May thread, ash from Mt. Etna in Sicily caused planes to be grounded in summer 2024, so Cwikly/Ford would have known that.  (I just learned that Mt. Etna has been considered "active" with intermittent activity since 2022, including February, April, and May 2025.) Friday May 30, Will said that Sami and Sydney found another flight and will be here soon. Well, Sami and Sydney got out just in time, because … There was (and still is ongoing) a huge eruption of Mt. Etna that began very early Monday morning June 2 Italy time (which would be Sunday night June 1st Chicago time) and a volcanic ash plume had reached an altitude of around 6,400 metres (around 3 or 4 miles high) https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/mount-etna-eruption-volcano-smoke-lava-live-updates-b2761911.html
    • Agree to disagree. Like first, love second. OH, agree, agree, agree! Legendary Featherstone, you're not dressing this one well at all. Petite woman with ample bosom, wrong clothes = awful  matronly looking ugh. I'm sorry but I felt hit over the head with everything each of them thought & felt for about 6 more days than I felt I had signed on for.  I don't know you well enough to know if you will know when I'm teasing, so I've just warned you that I am when I say, I hate for you that you haven't actually met Danielle before. LOL. To me it was just a natural take.  I have no problem going back & forth between those two focal sites. But, I am certainly aware that early on I had an expectation of being really into their having 27 sets & that has definitely not been the realization. And, yes, for now, Frank is still heads above any & all others with us & sets IMO.  Huh? Guza gone. I have it in my head that he was only willing to come out of retirement (and presumed mourning) for a "certain amount of time" to help get this new creature launched, but had no desire to stay & so was one of the "over-staffed intentionally" that we were told about. Of course there's been no official word on the circumstances of his leaving.  But, you might mean go with Guza as in a style, if so, ignore the last para.

    • I'm so pleased we have such fan engagement about Dani. Reminds me of some other soap characters. I think it's because they are "polarizers" which is a word I may have just made up. They are polarizing on their shows to other characters & to story & they are polarizing in the audience as fans seem to have extreme reactions to them, love & hate, not middling neutrality, ya know? Well, it's a theory.  To me the human being you seek has been amply shown especially to two people & both more or less recently. Her sister bond with Nicole, whoa, has knocked me back & blown me away. And, with Chelsea, over her budding sexual identity and awareness. She gathered instantly that something was up with that daughter & was laser focused on her for several scenes. Then, for a third, she & Pamela have finally, also recently, been so real & genuine & authentic.
    • Thanks, Paul, I did not know about his interest in the comedic elements or that he was one of our many people who came from the network! I have always liked Marlena de la Croix's writing, which is not to say I 100% agree with her. She's been a member of my FB soap group for a good long time & she actually posts, which I love. Recently I posted about an e-copy of Robert LaGuardia's SOAP WORLD that is free to borrow like a library e-book but on the Internet Archive site & I posted that at the time of their publications, all of his soap opera books were the gold standard.  She immediately posted about "Bob" who was her close friend & how much she still misses him to this day & that he loved to talk soaps & was also a nice guy, etc. which I was over the moon to have her share about the author & his time etc. like that!!!
    • Just more RTD ego trips, seemingly his main reason for coming back.
    • Thanks @Paul Raven  That's a lovely writeup. Do fans feel it was warranted?
