I knew this day was coming, but still...

So it’s finally been made official by the folks over at Days - Dena Higley is the new head writer of DOOL. (Talk about the worst-kept secret in daytime these days...)

It’s been kind of a roller coaster of a day for me because of this. I have mixed thoughts on the whole issue (most of which I can’t broadcast for billions of people to read on the Internet... come on, now... )

But far more important, this is also D-Day in terms of renewal or cancellation. I’ve heard so many rumors both ways (it’s done, it’s been saved for one more year, it seems to change on an hourly basis, and everyone’s heard a different rumor), I don’t know what to think anymore..

I know this new Head Writer makes some fans happy, and others cringe. Go on any message board and you’ll read as many people bitching about 2003, as you’ll find fans who loved February of 2008. And if it were any other time in Days’ history, I’d be right there with you, praising or complaining. But this time is different.

There’s a possibility we could see the last of Salem in 2009. It doesn’t matter who is writing the show, a decision will be made not on the history of the product, but the product’s viability as a good future investment.

If you’re one of the mysterious few who have a Nielsen box attached to your TV, and you were ever a fan of Days, I implore you to turn the show back on. Check out what’s going on in Salem. And if you don’t have a Nielsen box, I encourage you to organize your thoughts, write to Bruce Evans at NBC and Dena and Ed Scott and Ken Corday and Greg Meng at Corday - tell them what you want to see on your show, and what you don’t want to see. This is a crucial time in Salem’s history, and YOU, my dear friends, play a major role in it.

If you like what you’re seeing on the screen, tell Bruce Evans how much you’re enjoying it! If you don’t like what you see, write or call any of the people I mentioned at Days, tell them how much you love the show, and how you think it will improve if they fix the problem.

These people screwed me six ways from Sunday - if anyone would have a good enough reason to want to see the show crash and burn, I think I’m right up there (along with a few others). But that’s not my style. Days needs to live on, and I want you to know I’m organizing my own thoughts, getting my own letters ready based on which way the dice roll.

You can’t mention the phrase "soap opera" to non-soap viewers without them thinking "Days of our Lives". This show going off the air and not seeing any kind of rebirth is television tragedy. It’s time to pull together, folks - if Days lives on, let the people in charge know what you want to see on the air! If it gets canceled, write to Soapnet or Lifetime or Oxygen (I doubt CBS or ABC will pull one of their own shows for DOOL, and frankly, I wouldn’t want them to). Tell them you want to see what the future holds for the denizens of Salem.

YOU GUYS are the ones who brought Marlena Evans back from the dead in the 80’s (poor Samantha). YOU GUYS are the ones who said "This contest letting the fans choose the father is stupid" and you made Bo Zach’s father! People, this isn’t a storyline issue or a character issue - DAYS. COULD. BE. GONE. A. YEAR. FROM. NOW. If a couple fans can rally to bring a character back, you can certainly rally to save the show before NO character can EVER come back.

As one of my new MySpace friends pointed out to me (Thanks, Superposter!), this isn’t just a Days issue. This is a DAYTIME issue. If Days can go off the air so quickly, so easily, to be replaced with nothing but Access Hollywood re-runs or more judge shows, it can happen to ANY of the other soaps. We cannot afford to lose one more soap. If a mainstay like Days can go, don’t think for a second we aren’t looking at 2015, where Y&R, B&B and GH are the only shows left on the air. (If there are that many) It’s time to act now - even if you’re not a Days fan, if you ARE a daytime fan.

Thanks for reading... and for all of those fan campaigns out there, if I can help at all, you know where to find me!

Wow. That was an awesome take on things and I especially liked this quote:

In the end and unfortunately this will have no effect on the future of DOOL. Zucker will cancel it.

Sadly, I have to agree. Since it looks like NBC wants out of the soap business, nothing is going to change their minds over there. Since Zucker's explicitly stated he doesn't think the show will live passed 2009 on NBC, I'll be very shocked if NBC renews the show, even for a year.

I can't say this enough - I absolutely love his passion for soaps!

OK, since today I'm playing the evil witch of SON, I have to comment on this: what, Nancy Curlee, for example, is not passionate about soaps? Or your Jim Reilly?

There are many passionate people, members of this board whose passion is equally fiery.

Great blog by Tom but I have to say that fans have made their voices heard to numerous soaps powers that be with various campaigns over the years only to be slapped in the face time and time again. So I don't think that writing to NBC will help DAYS fate, e.g it might have helped Jericho temporarily but in the end the show was cancelled again.

It is pretty ironic that when these campaigns actually work, they save the cr*ppiest of shows... And even them - temporarily.

Such as what? The fact that he didn't blast the people he worked with? I'd like to see how he's "too green."
