Lack of Racial Diversity in Daytime

That works for me. GH is an English speaking soap opera so I expect to hear English, not Spanish. I got sick of it on AMC when they had Juan Pablo and Carlos converse with each other in Spanish. Uhh hello I know some of it but am not fluent in the language. It sucked that they did not even put subtitles on the screen the way they did when Henry's mom spoke Chinese. How could I possibly know the characters' objectives and motivations if I cannot understand a damn thing they say? And I believe Sonny was born in the United States, a country where the chief language is English....was he born in Mexico or a Spanish speaking country? I know Maurice Benard was born in USA (Martinez, CA which is about a half hour away from me).

Sorry if I sound politically incorrect

I agree to an extent.

I don't mean his children have to be fluent in Spanish but it would be a nice touch to show them at least understanding a bit of it every now & then (kinda like the Vegas on OLTL).

The Campbells were Taggert, Gia & Flo (their Mom).

Taggert had a complex history with Sonny, Gia was the feisty supermodel & Flo got a job at the hospital.

Then they just kinda faded away

Oh! okay. I loved taggert & gia. I dont remember Flo at all, but if she was in the late 90's i was in elementry school and only watched here and there or for liz/lucky/nik/gia. They were great and i wish GH would have kept them. Taggert was one of the best of sonnys enemies, and Gia was great because she could be both a heroin and a vixen.

The main problem was Ji Min was never meant to be a long term character.

ES proved popular so they gave him a contract but Latham didn't know what to do with him (or Jill) so she killed him off like she did Shackelford a few months earlier.

Oh, i had no idea Ji Min wasnt suposed to be long term. ES was great and he & JW had such chem, IMHO. But he written awful and did end up in a corner.

That i agree with, somewhat. Does Sonny speak spanish? there nanny? someone in there lives? does Molly even talk or is she all scared into silence again? And is Morgan saying more than a few words yet?

I must say that as much as i loath Sonny a scene with him teaching kristina some spanish would be super cute.

She is also way too much of a diva and has an ego the size of New York....just because she can write a memoir does not mean she can excel at soap writing. They are both different crafts and require a different type of creativity.

Her ego is no bigger than any of her peers.

She's been extremely loyal & contributed a great deal to the creative evolution of her character & her characters family over the years.

Other soap stars have been given the chance to write & direct.

She should be afforded the same opportunties.

And that's an aspect a minority writer would be more equipped to communicate.

Like how even the slightest differences in region & class can greatly effect slang & style for minorities.

speaking of directing, how could i not put la flannery on my previous list. she directs many b&b episodes, and obviously has influence on the creative direction of the show. she may not actually write the scripts, but of course the way a scene is filmed influences the feel and progression of the plots. her absence after brooke's rape shows that her actions and displeasure towards the show impact it.

i honestly think the sony/cbs/bell brass do not want to give a person of color any influence behind the scenes. goutman, wheeler, la flannery, etc are allowed to work behind the scenes, but not rowell? rowell's drucilla obviously has made more of an impact than any of goutman's acting role(s). the bias is very clear.

i honestly think whenever a writer says they don't know what to do with a character, it's a cop out. wasn't THE susan lucci only supposed to be on every other tuesday (that was in her emmy acceptance speech)? even if ji min was originally a short-term character, lml should have written more storylines for him. i don't think she didn't know what to do with him. i think she didn't want to use him. it's the same thing when brad bell says he can't write for racial minorities because it's a 30 minute soap. he just doesn't want to write for racial minorities.

He does speak spanish but the thing is that htere really isnt anyone for him to speak the language with on the show. Last time I remembred him doing so was when he was with Emily and he took her to Spain

why would it irritate you that people in california speak spanish? the more racial diversity, the better. it makes for a richer experience. it entertains me when characters of color can speak in their mother tongue on shows because it makes a scene appear more natural. if speaking in their language lets them celebrate their culture, then all the more POWER to them. it's a win-win situation.

Because it just irritates me. The more you speak Spanish here, the harder it will be to participate in a democratic process and get a good paying job. It is also a unifying factor for people to agree on a common language like they have in pretty much every country on this Earth except this one. I get really annoyed when, on the phone, I get these, "To continue this message in English, press one. Para espanol, prime number dos." This is America where the chief language is English. If you refuse to adapt, then you are making it harder on yourself to achieve the American dream. There is also a whole lot of taxpayer dollars that are being wasted to print things in multiple languages...why waste it there when the solution is simple by adapting? I also consider it ignorant that certain people come here and expect things to be the same from where they came from and refuse to adapt. I cannot communicate with someone unless they make that effort to assimilate into society...and one way to assimilate is to learn the chief language of English. I should not have to rely on three years of Spanish in high school to communicate with someone when I live in the nation that has English as its chief language, along with more than two thirds of the states declaring English the official language in their Constitution (California being one of them). I have no problem learning another language since it helps when you travel abroad but there are some people who come here not making the effort to learn English so that they have a successfl life. It is very hard to achieve success here if you do not know English. It is hard to participate in the democratic process....now ballots may be printed in multiple languages but looking at bills online/legislation, listening to debates (unless sponsored by Univision), contacting your elected officials, are all in English. I even have a couple friends in Canada who agree that English should be the official language of the United States.

Keeping your culture and adjusting/assimilating are two different things. I appreciate cultural diversity in this nation, that is, until it harms others and has a prejudice to it. I am talking about adjustment. Trust me, if you go live in a place like France and do not make the effort to adjust by learning French, they will spit on you. Take it from someone who has been to Paris. Now the French liked us because we made the effort for the four days we were there to speak French by bringing an English to French dictionary.

I don't care about characters speaking in native tongues on a show...what use is it if I cannot understand them and therefore see what their motives and what not are?

Well then he would be doing it for a purpose since he was in a nation where the official language is Spanish. I hope to get to Spain someday myself and I got three years of Spanish in high school (all A's in the courses) to help ;)

Well McTavish wrote a great deal of the Campbells and Taggart stuff on GH and then Guza came back...and we nicely got Epiphany (walking, talking stereotype), Justus dead as a doornail, Lainey (talked about but not seen...unless she's rubbing the shoulders of the greater PC), Cassius (who I'm not sure what the hell he's supposed to be) and Regina (who is the only student nurse who doesn't have a storyline...but that didn't stop them from bringing on Nadine).

I have no hope for GH...so I would prefer they just stop trying or rather stop insulting me.

or you can just stop watching if you feel they are insulting you (which I do not agree).
