Barack Obama Elected President!

My understanding is that the "men" who hung the Obama effigy hung it from a tree on the University of Kentucky campus. They were arrested for disorderly conduct and also for stealing the materials to make the effigy. The Palin effigy was hung by someone on his own property.

I think hanging someone in effigy is a disgusting way of expressing oneself but the Kentucky guys broke laws. The California man is just a douche.

Actually he was defending it as art. The neighbors made enough of an uproar for him to finally cave and take it down. They said he still has McCain popping out of a chimney of flames though.

The only evidence of it being poliotcal season around my neighborhood is one lawn sign against a proposition. And we have no Halloween decoration controversy since no one bothered to put anything up.

Obama's lucky I already voted for him because last night I heard part of his speech that made me realize he's crazy. He wants people to be able to keep their kids on their healthcare plans until they're 25 years old (if the kids can't get a plan). I can take 21 but 25 is too much. All this sort of thing will do is encourage dependency......now if the child is disabled in some way then I could see a permanent exclusion in those cases but I don't want any adult children asking to stay on my medical plan or even thinking they have the right just because of Obama. Now parents who want to be tough will have to keep umbilical cords as proof that it was cut when they tell those kids to vacate the basement....thank goodness we don't have a basement.

How low can the Republicans get?

Link: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/wor...n-14023786.html

Apparently fake press releases are circulating around parts of Virginia informing Democratic voters and Indepdent voters supporting Democrats that they are to vote on November 5th due to unexpectedily high voter turnout expected on Election Day.

Is there nothing Republicans won't resort to in order to win this election?

Yikes! I haven't heard that speech or this position, but that's not good, IMHO. This is just the kind of out-of-the-mainstream liberal idea that he needs to stay away from and not endorse it. 25 is way too old for a child to be on their parent's healthcare plan and I imagine that the majority of Americans would agree with that.

I'm a liberal SOB and I don't even like that plan.

I think he was in Missouri saying that. It was on last night and I was watching the people cheer and I figured they don't care anyway since they've got the fever. I'm fiscally conservative and I don't mind helping people but kids need to get going at a certain age. I was planning on telling mine that they're adopted so they can go looking for their "real" parents when I get tired of gimme gimme....but I haven't figured that out yet.....it seems like a viable plan though.

I was on my parents health plan until I was 24 because I was in college and the year after they claimed me as a dependent. I needed insurance for my medications which are well over 500 dollars a month without insurance. In that kind of scenarios, I can see where it would make sense. Yes you don't want your children to be dependent forever but you also want them to move out and never come back.

Thanks for clearing up the effigy matter. I saw it on our local news and they never said it was over a tree. I just think that no matter where you do it it's offensive and hateful.

I think I started filing when I was about 19 so I didn't even think about claiming college students as dependents....I guess that step comes later if I'm not successful.....

ITA about the effigy. At least the guy's neighbors complained and he finally respected their wishes.

Thanks Greg. Please tell Brian hello. I do miss chatting with him. I actually miss Casey a bit. I thought Casey was a true libertarian for a long while. He and I got sideways over a joke I made. He called me a bigot, which just set wrong with me.

Anyway, tell Brian and said hello.

I think that too about hanging characters in effigy. I think it just plays to people's anger and that's not a good thing.

You know almost all of the students -- grad and otherwise -- in my classes stay on their parents insurance until they are 24 and are forced off by the government. Most of the higher ed students plans are pretty weak. Graduate students, law students too, do not work full-time and most universities won't let them work full-time and be law students or Ph.D. students. I think that is why Obama is talking about raising it from 24 to 25.

I just think in today's environment everyone needs insurance.

I guess I'm confused. Being able to claim your 25-year-old isn't like being required to claim them right? It actually seems realistic to me. It takes longer for people to get through college for a lot of reasons. And it's harder to find an entry level job that provides insurance. I lived at home until I was 26. I also worked two jobs part-time (one "in my field" and one to pay bills) neither of which provided health insurance.

I'd follow Obama into the fires of Hell but frankly I'm not thrilled with either candidate's plan. I wish we would focus on improving health care instead of tweaking a fatally broken system.

You know, I proudly voted for Obama for president and I think he has the potential to be a great leader. Like you, however, I'm not happy with either candidate's health care plan. It's incremental change when I think we probably need innovation.

    • In an interesting turn of irony, when Somerset came onto the airwaves in 1970... it ran against Dark Shadows and beat it in the ratings fairly quickly.  Then when Edge of Night moves to ABC in December 1975 and put against Somerset, the slow ratings rise that Somerset was allegedly having in late 1975 is derailed. From reading the write ups of the final year, the show dropped the May/December romance.. which viewers enjoyed and was getting the show some good press... the original cast member was sidelined due to medical issues, and the show featured pure crime stories without any balance. I think the crime focus was an attempt to compete with EON.  However, people that were into crime stories/mysteries weren't going to tune into Somerset for their fix.. not when Edge of Night was known for that.. and that show was running on a high quality wise when the network switch occurred.

Whitesell lasts six months (approximately) before P&G moved him to AW for two years where he primarily worked with DePriest. Whitesell was replaced on Search by no daytime experience David Lawrence who closed out the show's last six months.

    • I assume in name only?  One Stormy Night wasn't exactly steamy.  If it's a literal throwback then Stephanie's writing about sexy times her own Uncle was having lol. Since I am going to surmise it's just a throwback to the name, Night Sins and Winter Heat both sound sexier.  Just saying.  I swear Jamey (and Ron) just google things and land on the first thing they like and decide it's a good throwback to history without watching it.

    • Thanks!   Was anyone watching during this time? Wondering how Peggy’s rape played out onscreen. It just seems cruel to subject the Brooks family to this trauma a 2nd time.   Feels like the writers have already given up on the character of Jennifer, even though she sticks around another year-plus. She should be a passionate and fierce protective mother, but instead she seems just reactionary (and not even mentioned in this recap) This was also the case in ‘73 when Chris was raped. The writers are definitely more invested Stuart as the Brooks parent.
