Administrator Toups Posted December 11, 2007 Administrator Share Posted December 11, 2007 When your show gets cancalled, and someone says that, let's see how you feel. Already going through two cancelations of my favorite soaps (AW, SuBe), I know how those people going through their first soap cancelation feels. This will be my third (if NBC decides to not try and save the show). It's not fun at all.
Members MikeGoldy
You know, I haven't liked Passions for years and years, and I've since grown to extremely dislike JER and his writing. But, I don't know how any fan of the soap genre, would be happy that Passions was cancelled. If Passions had succeeded on Direct TV, that wasn't going to mean all soaps would turn into Passions. But, it would have shown that soaps could perform well outside network tv. To be happy that the show is cancelled? Crazy
Members skiman12082004
Toups and other fans who have experienced this, I feel your pain. I have gone through this with Texas, Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, Ryan's Hope, Generations, Santa Barbara, Loving, The City, Sunset Beach, Port Charles, Passions and now Passions again. It is a terrible feeling and you would think after going through this so many times I would have learned my lesson, but I guess I haven't.
Members c0rinne
And see, I don't see how a failing soap failing on DTV means that the genre as a whole is doomed outside of network tv. Passions wasn't going to suddenly become a success, and being the best performing show on 101 doesn't mean much if the rest of the shows weren't great to begin with. Moreover, Passions at is heart, is inherently different than all other daytime soaps. You want a benchmark? Put Days on DTV, or put GL on DTV, then see what happens. (Or maybe not DTV since it sucks.)

Members Max
Even though I hate Passions more than words can say, I truly feel sorry for any of the show's fans who paid for the installation of Direct TV. I also don't believe that Passions is cancelled (regardless of what some actors' websites may say). I will not believe it until Direct TV and NBC release official statements to this effect. And, in the event that Direct TV has cancelled Passions, I am almost 100% convinced that it will find another home. That's because NBC's love for JERk and his show is so intense that the network will move heaven and earth in order to save it.

Members PhoenixRising05
That is true. One of the best qualities about the show was it's diversity and how all classes were represented.
Members REALTOR Rich
I couldn't agree more. Some of the highest ratings ever attained for soaps, any soaps, were based on romance, adventure, murder, betrayal, and catfights. This JER nonsense has brought irreparable damage to the genre. Members NeoAngelicLiz
I honestly don't feel bad at all about Passions being cancelled. It deserves to be off the airwaves and cast into oblivion. Its probably the worst embrassment in the entire history of Daytime Television...and thats saying a LOT. However like others I will admit that the only good thing about Passions was the diversity.

Members MikeGoldy
Soap fans may know the difference between Passions, and say, As the World Turns, but network execs don't. Passions failure (if that is what it is) on Direct TV, is a failure for the whole soap genre. And again, I'm not a fan of Passions, and I'm not going to miss it. But if anything else is going to kill the genre, it's fans declaring what is, and isn't a soap. If Passions is a mess, it's not because it didn't follow the normal soap formula. It's a mess because of the writing.
Administrator Toups Posted December 11, 2007 Administrator Share Posted December 11, 2007 ITA, you're absolutely right. JER will go down in history as the most influencial soap opera writer ever. Every network exec, every EP, every HW wanted to emulate his writing style. Actually, he was ghost head writing for every single soap opera so he was responsible for every crappy storyline from the last 15 years. Every soap wanted to be like Passions.....who was always at the bottom of the ratings. Even Y&R, the #1 soap wanted to like the lowly ranked soap. JER was that powerful. Only a person with JER's reputation......and mind control abilities can bring down an entire genre. JER's hand, his pen, was the mightiest of all. I guarantee that when Passions goes off the air, all the soaps will suddenly get better. The Reilly curse will be lifted and the soap opera genre will be saved. Hooray!!! Members MikeGoldy
HAHA, actually, I heard that if Passions goes off the air, JER had already signed a contract to headrite the remaining nine soaps on the air. It's going to be really cool!
Administrator Toups Posted December 11, 2007 Administrator Share Posted December 11, 2007 Damn, you must have awesome sources, Goldy because I heard the same thing too. Instead of ghost writing though, I heard this time he'll actually be credited. So this time, fans won't make the mistake of blaming other head writers for the crap storylines, they'll be able to blame Reilly.
