You know someone on youtube mentioned on this clip that it cant be made in an american soap, well it could if the right writers and actors actresses where on it. But otherwise not.

This is best friends and Senior ladies Dot and Ethel played by June Brown and deceased actress Gretchen Franklin. This clip who is about six minutes long makes anyone cry, i can admit it makes me really cry, because it`s so sad, and it shows two old women who has been friends all of their lives, as they talk about memories and about dying.

So are all of made of steel or can you admit it makes anyone cry?..........

In all fairness, the soaps did do stuff like this. I was scanning through the 100 Greatest Soap Moments on the Shrine to Soap Hunks website earlier and there were several. BJ's heart, Stone's death and the fallout from Margo Hughes killing Casey Peretti were all wonderfully written and acted.

I'm not in the mood for tears but it did make me shed a tear at the time, I'll admit.

I LOVE that clip. I also love the EastEnders clip when Tiffany runs to get her baby and is run down as the clock strikes midnight on new years' eve.

American soaps have the potential to do it. I think the opportunity was missed with Asa's death. That was treated with more joy. American soaps don't show restraint; the potency of Dot and Ethel was that we didn't have swelling music drowning out the quiet sadness; we didn't see Ethel actually take the pills; and the dialogue was spot on.

Brooke where very good in this scene, but i dont think the men where that good, Julia Barr is a capable and very good if she is getting the right material, a much better actress then rival Lucci, Susan.

But i must admit it didn`t move me at all, sorry. What i meant with the other clip was also that it shows two elderly ladies and Gretchen Franklin looks like a woman from a retirement home, it where so very natural, maybe to natural for some, that is the biggest difference between Us & Uk soap, i think many actors are good, and american actors are good with the right material also, but it is the look thing and the age.

An American soap would never show an elderly woman visit her very old friend whoes dying at the hospital in town, if they where the ladies would look like Anne Jeffreys and Joan Rivers, but that is not how normal people look like, that`s why it so more natural, because in all of the english soapoperas (Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale), they are natural and there looks and acting are like it could be made in real life, i enyoy American soaps also, but it dosent move as much as english.

Unlike American soaps English ones showes old people who look old, that is not ok in America....

    • What is the most recent episode in which Maurice Johnson's Ted wore a turtleneck?
    • They had a Liam/Hope montage today supposedly about all their times together but it was only Annika's Hope and no scenes from Kim Matula's Hope.  I realize they probably didn't want to restage those scenes with Annika. But still it was weird to omit the Italian wedding.  They could have thrown in a Puglia scenery pic without the actors.
    • I haven't watched today's episode yet, but maybe that was the point. Maybe they're trying to move Ted in a more unlikable/villain direction and it wouldn't work with the previous actor. Or maybe it's just that transition phase which will take some getting used to.
    • Thanks to the benefits of watching the last weeks of Sherry's stint as Liza and the start of Louan's stint as Liza... I can safely say that Liza would have remained the lead heroine had Sherry stayed on as Liza.   Charisma is a mighty important element that makes someone watchable and likable... and Sherry had that. No disrepect for Louan because she was a good actress.. but to me, she played a more passive/neurotic Liza vs the more confident/decisive version of Liza.  I think the Liza vs Estelle over TR story would have had more impact with Sherry in the role..imho.
    • Welcome @SoapCurios it is nice to see new people here. Many episodes from The City still aren't available, but if I find any that touch on Azure's story, I will post them.
    • I'm not invested in Ted as a character anymore either. He's not the same.
    • I have a feeling it was either coincidence or it was an idea whose time had come. Remember Bill Bell was also into the psycho-sexual. So it was happening more than one place. Pete Lemay began disagreeing with Irna quite early on. He shut up & listened at first, naturally because he had to learn the basics. But, as soon as he had, they began to have arguments, disagreements. They both were devotees of character-driven but the similarities stopped pretty quickly. Bolin as far as AW was concerned was nuts & bolts, or more $$$. It was all about the numbers. And the numbers were great, double the ad revenue & that went to the network. As far HTSAM was concerned, that was her baby, no one else's. It is so funny to me that Lemay started this by accident.

    • What did you all think of Hogan/Patti compared to the stuff with Liza and Sonny? Did you buy anything about Sonny and Bela? Has a recast ever decentralized a character as much as Sherry's exit did with Liza? Or do you think that would have happened even if Sherry had stayed?
    •     I think the three comments pretty much summarize my thoughts. The green is not pleasant. I think I know where they were going with it, but it doesn't translate on screen.  The bar at Uptown is actually pretty good. It's my favorite part. I totally get it having an East Coast vibe. I used to frequent a place like it and while I wouldn't necessarily call it pretty...it was a bit Kitsch but it had a vibe. This place is lacking the vibe. I know it's not easy to hire extras, but even having a karaoke night in the background or live music would change the whole feel.  Vernon and Anita having breakfast there was a great idea. Another place besides the country club where they could talk. However, why were they using country club china at an establishment like Uptown. It just seems a bit confused. I don't understand what it's supposed to be.
