6 YR OLD Brings Crack For Show & Tell

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A Shreveport woman has been arrested after her first-grade son brought a rock of crack cocaine to school for show-and-tell. The 6-year-old boy told police he found the object in his mother's car, according to booking reports.

Police were especially disturbed by the child's understanding of crack cocaine. They said he seemed so accustomed to the highly addictive drug that he thought there was nothing wrong with bringing it to school.

"Going on 30 years in law enforcement, sometimes you think you've seen it all. But this one, I just can't believe," Police Chief Mike VanSant said shortly after the mother was brought to jail.

"He (the child) said that he had seen other family members smoking it," VanSant said. "He had found it in his mother's car."

Police did not release the name of the school, saying they were still investigating.

Lachristie Thomas, 20, was booked on a charge of improper child supervision, a misdemeanor. She was released on a $334 bond Friday evening.

The 6-year-old will be placed in foster care, police said.

Um...why would it be funny reading about a six year old bringing crack to school? That' to me isn't even a chuckle.

It's sad to read how children are taken away from families because parents don't want to have the responsibility to be parents to their children; to still want to live their lives as if they never existed. I am very blessed that my grandmother took care of me; my mom was the same way...Had me too young, wanted to continue to live her life the ways she did; full of drugs and no responsibility of being a parent to me.

Reading things like this always makes me sad for the child, because they are the ones that are hurt in the process of what their parents do.

There are sooo many folks that actually want to care for a child; have a child, etc, but we are constantly reading about women who have children but could care less about them;

The mother's 20? So she must have only been 14 when she had that kid...:blink: It's unfortunate that becoming a parent doesn't necessarily make one a REAL parent. That boy should have been in the care of a more responsible adult a looong time ago. :(

It's babies having babies and that is so very sad. But it happens all too often these days. :(

This really ties in with something we were discussing in my Middle Grades Education class a few weeks ago.

The stat the professor threw out at us was that girls under the age of 15 in the U.S. were 15 times more likely to have a baby than those in the world's other developed nations.
