Once upon a time, I worked in a college's acting program admissions office. IAL had worked there years before, I sat at his old desk. Some how or another, my boss and I got to talking about soaps one day and he mentioned IAL whose name I did not recognize at the time. This was the late '90s and I'm not sure that we even had Google yet, it was a couple of years before I thought back and searched the name online. At any rate, my boss told me that he was a great guy and had to quit when he fell ill. He was so vain, my boss half-joked, that he wouldn't let anyone see him as he'd lost so much weight and wasn't looking or feeling his best. When he passed, his partner and his family all got together and threw him one hell of a homegoing, if there had been any friction in the past, it was all put aside. So it's nice to know that through the pain of illness and death, he had a lovely final chapter.

I saw this guy in a clip I watched the other night and I got to thinking, "Does any dude on the soaps sport a full beard these days?" (and please no JPL jokes, I'm asking seriously).

Chris Bernau, you "handsome bachelor" you. I wonder what Susan Hufford said when she saw that pic of her with Michael. How... odd this time in the soap world was. It's so curious how they comment on the actors' personal lives in a way they no longer do yet there is still that studio system respect for image/reputation, all the while, somene like MZ can say that he's quitting and that gets printed and he probably wasn't even reprimanded for it. Compared to today, it's all oddly casual yet still controlled, I don't know if I'm making ANY sense ...

Thanks Carl! I've also read that Richard Egan (Sam) was quite ill at this point and was about to be written out (Sam was going to be murdered, big murder mystery, Kate, Myrna, Laureen??). It would have been interesting if there was some sort of gaff in Sam's divorce from Laureen making his marriage to Myrna void and Laureen inherited the money and power of Clegg Industries or something to that effect. From what I've seen, Paula is noticeably absent during a lot of the action in the show's final days, especially considering it's her daughter Sloane who's facing death by firing squad. I think I've actually read fan reaction from the time sayng the same, "Where is Paula throughout all this??" I have an earlier ep that tickles me, Paula that nut, where she's kidnapped Mark from the hospital when he was shot and has had the basement of her home redone to look like a hospital where she's keeping him. What a riot. She won't let him see a newspaper or anything, hired nurses/doctors, you can even hear the "*ding* *ding* Paging Dr. Whoever" thing overhead, the whole bit. I'd like to see how that whole s/l played out.

Carl you mind reader you, I was totally going to mention that but decided not to weaken my argument with it. I dodn't see this story, I just know it from the screencaps at AWHP, Iris at the podium/fainting/screaming whatever. I still have yet to see Carole Shelley's iris, though the other night I caught her on YouTube in scenes with Palmer and Cynthia on AMC, HamiltonBernique's channel.

So who was the guy from another soap that RWP was seeing? I was watching some SB on YouTube the other night, what a fun show. Very vivid characters and actors (I also think this show wins the award for soapiest character names). Really wish SoapNet would have gotten its act together.

And from my limited viewing of BM's Iris, I'd have a harder time buying her as a woman who'd have ever been interested in <<gulp>> working. Well, not at that pseudo-Alexis Carrington level of corporate intrigue. Iris was not a boardroom diva, even for Mac. I think she'd have someone do it all for her, I guess kind of how Evan did a lot of the foot work. But returning to work for Cory, Brava and all that, BM's Iris struck me as happily unemployed and idle rich.

Yeah, I don't think her manner of dress was a "bad" thing, DR's good, just different interpretations of the character. When there was all that buzz about the Dallas movie, they were saying that Shirley MacLaine was tapped for Miss Ellie, and I just cannot see that by any stretch of the imagination. Even at her most dramatic, she is way too OTT for Eleanor Southworth. But again, they were going for a very modern take on a rich Dallas society matron, the women who dress like Opal on AMC as Jill Larson once pointed out.

I remember reading that too, that DR was more of your downtown Dallas rich oil man's wife, in her smart suits and such, BBG in her sack dresses. Yes, a couple of my drama teachers saw that original Broadway production of Cat, and petite plucky blonde BBG was playing against type even there. She caused quite a stir when she sashayed across that stage in her lingerie.

That's interesting... and weird. I've also read that he wanted his own mother, Mary Martin, to take over for BBG. Maybe some mommy issues he was looking to act out, I dunno. I think that's really pushing it if not even your character's MOTHER can get after you. If anything, that would only play into Jacobs' original concept of his character, the hard-working, "responsible" son who could never measure up to his golden boy little brother a la Gooper and Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Yeah, regardless of what they were thinking unbeknownst to her, the gig wasn't sold to DR as a temporary one. I read once that her family believed losing Dallas is what did her in. She was so upset about her firing and how she'd been treated while on the show. They lit her poorly, she complained about having no key light, and they did nothing to remedy it. It's like they wanted her miserable and I don't get why unless they eithe rknew BBG was interested in coming back or they wanted no Miss Ellie at all. This is from the Dallas site: 2.8 What is Donna Reeds side of the story? According to her biography: Larry Hagman got Donna Reed fired from "Dallas" because she was too good. That's the shocking claim of a new biography of the Oscar-winning actress. Reed was hired with much fanfare in 1984 to replace Barbara Bel Geddes as Ewing family matriarch Miss Ellie. But when she proved she could hold her own with Hagman, she started getting the cold shoulder from "Dallas" most powerful cast member. "There were muted signs that Hagman was not happy with her," says Jay Fultz, author of "In Search Of Donna Reed." Once when Patrick Duffy playfully asked if he could call her "Mama," she overheard Hagman mutter, "Well, she isn't my Mama." Other cast mates, wary of upsetting Hagman, also began to shun Reed. The tension often drove her to tears until her husband finally suggested she leave the show. "I am not a quitter!" she defiantly replied. Producers drastically reduced her role and resorted to dirty tricks, such as refusing to let Reed view rushes of her early episodes. She quickly discovered why: They had filmed her to appear years older. "The harsh lighting is deliberate and mean as can be," Reed wrote. "She felt ambushed," adds Fultz. Reed was fired in 1985, while vacationing in Paris. Producers not only made her agent deliver the bad news, but expected her to issue a press release saying she had only intended to be on the show for a year. In reality she had just signed a two year extension. "Donna refused to participate in such dishonesty," says Fultz. She went to court and won every penny producers had promised her on her contract. Reed minced no words about who she felt was responsible for her firing: "I don't think Larry Hagman liked a strong actress playing his mother-he wanted A FAT WADDLING BROWN WREN OF A WOMAN WHO BLINKS A LOT," she wrote a friend. "Nobody ever said showbiz was easy, fair, fun or filled with nice people," she added, "'Dallas' is the pits, obviously." No disrespect to the late, great BBG, but that line is full of WIN.

LOL, I know right. BM did say in her "Daytime's Most Wanted" interview that Rauch had invited her back pre-Joan but she declined. Knowing how he rolls, maybe that's why he slid in remarks like, "Joan could be the most fabulous Alexandra yet" (I remember Michael Logan being particularly offended by that statement). Although she was a cool blonde like Constance, Beverlee would have had to have played Myrna, all that bitchy glam riding off of Iris. She would have resembled Marla Adams' Myrna. Checking out that Nicolas Coster interview and other old pics, my God Marla Adams was a fine ass woman in her day.
