Loving/The City Discussion Thread
Wow, I haven't seen the murders storyline I guess since it aired. My family watched Loving but I don't remember many of the stories so these old episodes and summaries are really fun. I remember all the AMC characters and then of course people like Stacey, Ava, Ally, Gwyn, and all them but it's cool to see people and characters I'd forgotten about. It's sad it never took off like it should have because it was definitely at leas interesting and had a great group of characters and actors. Honestly, other than the murders, the only storylines that I really remember are Faison chasing Jeremy and Ava around Universal Studios, Jeremy and Ceara moving to Corinth (with Ceara promptly getting shot and killed), and that storyline that crossed over with AMC where Dinah Lee was running away from her abusive ex-boyfriend and stayed at Myrtle's. I think Trevor and Jack from AMC also appeared on Loving at some point too? Idk. I loved Lisa Peluso on the last few years of Another World and when she was randomly on OLTL for a hot minute. What ever happened to her?

I'm sorry but what. I know Europeans have a reputation for this but I assure you that the majority of them bathe on a regular basis. Also, how frequently they bathe most likely has no bearing on this situation.

Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
No. It's summer literally everywhere in the South Hemisphere and that hasn't done anything from stopping it form spreading. African countries are way more prepared for pandemics in general and a lot of them have measures in place to deal with things like this. There's also the fact that the case number will probably go up in certain countries as more people travel and get tested.

Tom Hanks was walking around Sydney all last week and hanging around at the beaches (he was literally like 3 KM from my home sigh) before he went to the Gold Coast, so I'm sure everyone here is about to be in a state of panic.

Thanks Mostly people like Pelosi because she's the only one standing up to Trump, or least she's the only one who makes it onto the news. A lot of people feel like she's the one stopping things (like getting involved with Iran for example) that would end up effecting other countries. But yes, Obama and Clinton are *extremely* well liked, along with Biden mostly. My aunt and grandmother watch RT a lot and I think RT has actually cooled some on Trump lately lol. He's no longer "darling Trump" or "beautiful Trump" but it's still usually positive. Sanders gets a lot of praise on RT too, which adds to my impression that he's a grifter and shady tbh.

So is it over for Sanders? Or does he have a path? Twitter is full of people shouting at each other that it's "not over" for Sanders and that they're taking this all the way to the convention, whatever that means. CNN is basically saying that Biden is going to be the nominee and for Sanders and Warren to give it up so that everyone can unite to take on Trump. Not really sure what the exact answer is here. Also, fwiw, I see a lot of both Trump and Sanders supporters claiming that the rest of the worlds hates Nancy Pelosi, the Clintons, the Obamas, and the Bidens which is ummm, not true lol. I like all of them quite a bit- especially Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi- and so do most of the people I know both here in Australia and back in South Africa. The same however can't be said of Trump or Sanders themselves. I don't know anyone who has a favourable opinion of them.

🤣 But seriously...who is this man's fanbase? Loud kids on Twitter? If I had a vote, I think I'd probably go for Warren, but Joe Biden seems like an honest, decent, good man. Sanders reminds me all the grifter politicians in South Africa that ran in every election when I was a kid who talked a lot but had no means of backing up anything they said. But besides that, Biden is obviously turning out the vote and has the passion and support from everyone he needs to hopefully take down Trump. I don't get the whining from Sanders supporters. I thought the most important thing was beating Trump but I guess for some of them it's not.

I'm still confused about his "large coalition" that I hear about on Twitter and the news. All the Americans living aboard and in the US that I know are for Warren or Biden.

I know it's not really my place to say, but I'm watching this on CNN international and I didn't like Sanders' supporters booing Biden and other Democrats whenever they were mentioned. The woman who I assume is Sanders' wife smiling and almost laughing every time it happened was also a really bad look, at least to me. I know Australian politics are almost never classy either so I don't have much room to talk, but how is anyone suppose to beat Trump when some of these people are behaving like that?

I don't have any real clue on how this all really works in the US, but CNN basically said Biden and the Democrats want Warren and Klobuchar to stay in through Tuesday because they'll block Sanders from winning their home states and they'll keep him from running the table in other places. Also speaking as someone who grew up around "socialism" and is probably more liberal/left than most of the people here, I'll say I do not understand the Sanders thing at all or why he's some sort saint to some of these people. I grew up in places where we had socialised medicine and all those things and I'm definitely to the left, but he just seems like a con artist to me. No offense to the US, but I don't ever see you guys getting all the things he's promising because the US isn't made that way. Anyway, can someone explain to me his loud rabid fanbase?

Star Trek: Picard
I got to see the first three episodes at a press thing and it's good stuff. I won't spoil anything too much but I was really pleased. I thought they really got going fast and it wasn't bogged down in nostalgia and fan service right from the bat except for two minor things. Patrick Stewart slipped back into the role really easily. Also, the plot is going somewhere I totally wasn't expected and draws on TNG history in a very clever way. FWIW, also, Seven isn't in it till the 4th episode and Riker, Deanna, and aren't in it till at least the 5th or 6th episode, so it definitely has time to breathe and gives Picard and the new crew a chance to shine before the old crew joins in.

Hope you and your family are staying safe and are out of any direct danger. I'm on the beach in Sydney and it's been unbearably hot here the past few weeks. The wind, air quality, and smoke are of course horrendous. How are the conditions where you are?

Can someone explain the Bernie cult to me? I see his very loud supporters on CNN and twitter and I'm truly baffled as to why he is the one and only for them. Just from what I catch on the news, I think Elizabeth Warren is the most compelling and thoughtful of the candidates, followed by Beto and Harris. Also, in Australian political news, I apologise for the fact that Scott Morrison tried to bring his mate Brian Houston the evangelical cult leader to the White House. Truly horrifying that Hillsong is expanding to other parts of the globe.

I'm just going to ignore what that rant was about and say that I'm hyped and think it looks excellent. Seven with the two phasers! And the Troi, Riker, and Picard reunion looks lovely.

Just shocked to learn that Scott Morrison is now somehow deeply involved in this mess.

I second this request. Aussie news presenters seem to be under the assumption that Mike Pence is probably going down too and are saying that would mean Nancy Pelosi somehow ends up in charge? Like how soon are we talking that this would happen and does this have an effect on the election? Also, can someone give me a brief summary of how this is different than the Richard Nixon situation? I had assumed he was removed but apparently he quit, so was that different than what's going to happen here or did he just quit before it got to this point?

Star Trek: Picard
Some sleuths on Reddit and Twitter found this about someone that is more than likely making an appearance: https://twitter.com/AleSTrek/status/1170840036385972226 https://twitter.com/AleSTrek/status/1171126170789842944 (for those who can't read Spanish, some of the main and returning cast that filmed on the last day of shooting signed a card for the crew and people have basically matched one of the signatures to Michael Dorn. That goes along with someone letting it slip during an interview a few weeks ago that he'd been on set.) Also, the same people have been snooping on the IMDB page, and found some interesting names/characters have popped up on the cast list: -Graham Shiels as Tal Shiar agent (Tal Shiar is the Romulan intelligence agency) -Barbara Eve Harris (from basically every show under the sun) as Captain Emily Bosch -Lulu Wilson (from Annabelle and The Haunting of Hill House) as Kestra (which given her age and the fact that Kestra was Troi's dead sister's name, she's probably Riker and Troi's daughter) Chelsea Harris doesn't have a character name yet but looks like she's playing a Trill who is involved with the main girl Picard is helping. There are also several younger versions of Picard's new crew so they're presumably doing some flashbacks to fill in the gaps for some of their backstories.

Star Trek: Picard
I grew up watching TNG every week so that trailer and news has really took me back. Awesome trailer. I don't know anything, but I assume at least Dr. Crusher will make appearances in the first series. Vee is right that they're married with a child in the books and possibly the comics that are going on right now too? I'm not sure. (I'm pretty sure they're married in that MMO Star Trek Online game that is ongoing too). I'd guess it's more of a case of them holding off on announcing everything at once and them wanting to have some surprises. With that being said, I have a feeling they're going to slowly share news up to the premiere and they wanted to show off Seven of Nine and Data, which is why they used them in the trailer. I'm a little surprised they went ahead and announced Troi and Riker too, unless they felt it might be too much to try and hide if they're appearing in a lot of the episodes (I know they didn't say how many, but I got the vibe that them, Data, and Seven of Nine are in a fair amount). Plus, I think someone spotted them together onset and took a photo that they tried to brush off as her visiting the set while he was directing but it was obviously what was going on. I wonder how much of their story- if any- from the books they'll keep. Geordi and Worf, I can them holding off with until the second series, but I'm sure they'll appear too at some point. I think the urge to get all of them back together will be to much too resist. I could see them bringing on Kate Mulgrew for an episode or two as well.

When I was staying in the US, I heard a lot of the "go back to where you came from"/"speak English"/"you're so lucky we even we let you in here" stuff even though I was suppose to be one of the immigrants they like (white, there legally, well off). It always made me feel completely unwelcome, humiliated, and awful. I can only imagine how bad it is for POC and people who hear it everyday. I can't speak to the political side of things with the four of them, but they have my sympathy with the racist comments. From the outside looking in, it seems like this latest event has made things significantly worse and that there's no going back. I just feel sorry for the US. Also, I find US politicians using Israel and the Jewish people as a shield disgusting. I'm Jewish and proud to be so, but there are legitimate criticisms of Israel and Netanyahu to be had and pointing them out does not equal anti-Semitism. I find the fetishising of Israel from right wingers everywhere to be so gross and disingenuous, especially since from I can tell, most of them only care about it because they claim it'll bring upon the rapture (in which all the Jewish people will be sent to hell or left to fight giant rapture bugs- I'm not sure which is the official story these days). Ugh.

Thanks. I assumed it was something like this, but I didn't want to comment on it without knowing the context of it. It was a really great moment. Again coming from an outside perspective and not knowing much about any of them outside of Bernie and Biden, I thought Warren, Harris, Gillibrand, Buttigieg, and Castro were the stand outs and had the best ideas and message for exactly why they were running. Do any of them have a chance or is it just going to Biden or Bernie? I thought Beto, Klobuchar, and Booker stood out as well but not as strongly as the others. I'm afraid to ask because I'm sure they'd be just awful to watch, but are their debates for Trump and the Republicans? Or does the sitting President not have anyone true against them from their own party?
