When WAS the last time a daytime soap was consistently good? Twenty five years ago?

I'd say the last soap to be consistently good, sometimes even brilliant, was Y&R, up until 2003. It was the last holdout.

Kevin's "blanket party" in jail (2004)
This is primetime-worthy, IMO.  Kevin was often propped (he can rape and commit arson, but oh, he can't to jail cause he's scared of small spaces!), and this was some of the only comeuppance he got for raping Lily.

A great example of Y&R production quality and excellent use of music.

    Tricia kills Tony (2000)

This was such a shock to watch unspoiled. Poor crazy Tricia, this one time she didn't mean it.

It was a huge shock, indeed. Also, great location work.

It wasn't Samms that was horrible: The super-soft writing of her character, which actually started to take shape a year before Martin left, was the problem. With the recast, The Colbys storylines abandoned any sense of the strong Fallon we'd known.

When Samms returned to Dynasty, things started to improve. Then come season 9, credit the new EP David Paulsen. In an interview, he described his first time meeting Samms, getting to know her personality, and realizing the essence of Fallon was right there in front of him... But the previous writers had been ignoring her fire in favor of having her play a shrinking violet.

    100% on point.

It was the writing that was the issue with Fallon, even during Martin's Seasons 3 and 4. The otherwise superior COLBYS unfortunately never got Fallon right. What was Samms to do when she was ordered to play her the way she was?

She was fantastic in Season 9.

Since Amazon Prime added the remastered version, I've been watching Baywatch in its entirety. It's fascinating how many daytime actors appeared on the show. I certainly didn't realize it then. One season two episode featured Marla Adams and Tuc Watkins, along with the series regulars, David Hasselhoff, Billy Warlock etc. It's fun to watch for guest star spotting.

I'm binging Baywatch on Amazon Prime

Wow, I had no idea it was on Amazon Prime. I have most of the DVDs but the HD looks soooooo good, I may just watch on AP. Too bad they cut out those opening teasers.

Just rewatched Breaking Bad for the first time since the finale. Still one of the best written/acted/produced television shows I’ve ever seen.

I've been meaning to rewatch the series. A small part of me worries it might lose some of its luster if I do so, but I'm glad to hear it has held up for you.

Actually, I've heard rumors suggesting she, Jane Elliot, Dee Hall and Leslie Charleson are all members in some weird soap actress lesbian cult, but that's beside the issue.

We need this as a TV movie!!!

  5. I nearly lost it when Austin, who has been trying to get Carrie back, walks into her apartment and just takes his shirt off. Like, "You can't possibly deny me now! Just look at the muscles!" He then grabs her face and puts it on his humongous peck under the guise of having Carrie "listen to his heart" saying I love you. OMG.

Was it Bill Bell or Kay Alden that did the Joshua and Veronica Landers story?

Bell did most of it and Alden finished it off/did the climax.

It seemed interesting, but than it veered off into just having Victor/Nikki remarry on a whim that really led to nothing really interesting (other than Diane's woman scorned  story).

I don't know if I'd call it a "just". The shooting/remarriage sparked a ton of the next few years' worth of story: Diane and Victor's bitter divorce battle, the Newman takeover, SpermGate, Nikki and Brad 2.0, Victor's attempt to seize Jabot again, Nikki going into business, etc. So many developments in those few years can be traced back to that.

Y'all are a mess. I gave up like 4 weeks in. It was unbearable from Day 1.

I'm not exactly defending Passions, mind, but 2-3 months in, it started to gel and became addictive. Of course, I can't account for what happens after Season 1....

I haven't seen the show since S3 (I was going to start watching S4 a few years ago but I learned Tywin was killed off so I lost interest).  I want to see the final season, and will play catch up.  Is there any season from 4 - 7 that I can skip and won't regret?

    12 minutes ago, Vee said:

Not really, but much of 5 is a real mess.

Agreed. You can't skip any of it without missing out on major payoffs or important twists/reveals. Season 5's rough, but don't let that stop you.

If Tywin is a motivator, you definitely want to see Season 4 ;)

  9. That will be fun to watch later on! Thanks!

I loved OLTL back then, long before Paul Rauch dismantled its core and turned it into an unfortunate, low-brow sci-fi mess.

I know it's not the same, but I get exactly what you mean: As I was reading Warner's "One Life to Live" book, I devoured the year synopses and was totally fascinated by the stories happening. But as we started getting to the mid-80s (probably around '84) the stories' interest took a sharp decline (even in synopsis form). I started reading about doctor villains losing their hands to crocodiles and such. It's very clear the show became something different (some of the 90s sounded very good) and not for the better.
