Recasts on shows: good, bad, in between
To David Vickers, You mention Marilyn Chris as a replacement in the role of Wanda. She originated the role, left, then returned. (She had first appeared on All My Children as Edie.) Also, I'd like to add a good replacement on As the World Turns: Patricia Bruder as Ellen Lowell Cole Stewart. Henderson Forsythe as David was also a good recast.

One of the best recast in daytime television history was the late Thayer David as Matthew Morgan on Dark Shadows. George Matthews was the original Matthew.

I think that Nicholas Surovy (name probably spelled incorrectly, but he was on A World Apart and All My Children) would have been a very good Pete O'Neil on One Life to Live.

Dark Shadows Discussion Thread
I would love to know some post-Dark Shadows information about two performers: John Lesall (Dr. Peter Gutherie) and Jane Draper (Suki Forbes). I had asked before about Mr. Lasell (who also created the role of Dr. Michael Shea) and was told that he was still living.

I have been trying for many years to find this out: what happened to Leigh Lassen and Terry Hale?. I do know that they divorced.

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
My thought is that the show wanted an actress whose popularity would match that of Lynn Loring, the original. Leigh Lassen seemed to come closest, and she stayed in the role the longest of the replacements. But, there has to be more to it than that. Maybe there was a different reason for each of the replacements.

All My Children Tribute Thread
The storyline was presented twice? I knew that in this storyline, Tom and Livia were attempting to move into the White Waters neighborhood, and that Taylor was trying to disguise herself as a white lady with the gang of racists. But, it was basically one storyline. I have often wondered about Igrid Rogers. I suspect that she may have decided to leave upon learning of the change of direction for the character. The second Taylor, though, was an EXCELLENT performer. She just was not much like the original.

No, it is different enough from Josette's theme to be considered an original tune.

"I know Danfling is unhappy that Leslie Bauer was killed off Guiding Light. I believe Lynne Adams wanted to leave so the Dobsons saw it as a chance to free up Mike for further romance. Danfling, were you a fan of Adams particularly or the Leslie character in general? Had they decided to recast, who do you think would have worked in the role? Barbara Rodell and Kathryn Hays had both played Leslie but were contracted to As The World Turns." I am now a fan of Lynne Adams, but I was not at the time. I would have liked the show to recast another actress because I felt that the audience had gone through so much with the Leslie character. Right now, I cannot think who I would suggest as a replacement, but I will start thinking about it. How about Laurie Hinemann (As the World Turns, Another World) or Melinda Peterson (As the World Turns) or Carol Roux (Another World - both of them)? Actually, though, your question leads me to remember what had happened on the show a few years earlier. Lynne Adams had left the show and was acting on The Secret Storm as Amy. Barbara Rodell was playing Leslie. Then, Jada Rowland offered herself to return to The Secret Storm as Amy. That show released Ms. Adams, and she was re-hired as Leslie on The Guiding Light. This caused Ms. Rodell to be dismissed from The Guiding Light. The Guiding Light had just begun a storyline (I think which had been planted many years earlier when Agnes Nixon was writing the show) about the mother of Leslie and the ex-wife of Dr. Steve Jackson. I think that the better solution would have been to leave Ms. Rodell in the role of Leslie and to have cast (or replaced Carol Titel) as the mother. For years, there had been a portrait of Mrs. Jackson which was the image of Lynn Adams.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
My late mother watched As the World Turns from the beginning. She hated Nancy during the early years. She said that Nancy was downright mean to Penny. (She blamed Penny someway for Susan's drowning.) She loved it when Aunt Edie would periodically return to the show (I say "periodically," but I think that it may have only been once.) She did like Pa and Judge Hughes. I know that Helen Wagner was written off as Nancy during the first year. I think that she played Nancy as a too mean character. Then Irna Phillips wanted her back. I guess that Ms. Wagner then toned down the character.

Either Jonathan Frid (Dark Shadows) or Louis Edmonds (Young Doctor Malone, Dark Shadows, All My Children) as Allen Dunbar on The Secret Storm. Although I loved Holland Taylor as Denise Norwood Cavanaugh, R. N. on The Edge of Night, Lara Parker (Dark Shadows) would have been good in the role also.

Many of us would have liked to have seen various performers playing soap opera roles that were filled by other performers. For instance, Frances Heflin (All My Children) would have been a good Martha Wilson on As the World Turns. I thought that Mitchell Ryan (Dark Shadows) would have been a much better recast as Mike Karr on The Edge of Night than Forrest Compton. Who are some performers that you would have liked the producers to have hired for a role. (Please identify the roles.)

child performers of the soap operas
Ellen Kearney is on Facebook, and she has reported that one of her brothers (Michael or Mark, I cannot remember which one) has passed away. Another child performer who has been in the reruns of The Doctors is Donny Melvin. (He was also on The Guiding Light and The Secret Storm.) Both he and his sister were performers, and I would love to know what has happened to them (The sister, to my knowledge, never appeared on a soap opera.)

I wonder what happened to Bobby Alford (the original Bob Hughes on As the World Turns)?

Dark Shadows Discussion Thread
I first began watching Dark Shadows in 1966 when I was ten years old. As an adult, I have re-watched the show many times. I am convinced that the best actress on the show was Clarice Blackburn. I must also say that Nancy Barrett was became a great actress. She was good when the show began, but the amount that she grew as an actress playing the different roles (plus the two Dark Shadows movies) made her a wonderful and competent actress. I think that Christopher Pennock was probably the best of the male actors.

child performers of the soap operas
in my opinion, these three young men were the best three child actors in soap opera history: 1 Matthew Anton (Tad Garner Martin, All My Children) 2 Jason Alexander Fischer (Al Holden, One Life to Live) 3 Frankie Michaels (Tommy Hughes, As the World Turns)

Is the picture above of John Danielle and Lisa Wilkinson from the first time they married or the second time? I cannot even remember if they had an onscreen wedding the first time or not. I was watching the program, but it seemed that I always had to miss the wedding episodes on All My Children. The first one that I remember seeing was the wedding of Frank and Caroline.

The soap opera writers' discussion
Tina was a great creation! I liked her with Greg Huddleston. She drank a certain flavor of soda - grape, I think. He also created Richard Abbott, Gwendolyn Lord Abbott, Becky Lee Hunt/Jackson, and Johnny Drummond. Jacqueline Zeman was great as Lana McClain. I had been including her in the Vernon storyline. And, the storyline about Brian Ashley's death was also good. I had forgotten about these things when I posted. But, I would like for someone else who was watching to recall what he/she thinks that were his best storylines. In my own opinion, I did not think that the baby switch storyline was all that imaginative, but Katrina Karr and Marcello Salta were good characters.

The soap opera writers' discussion
Aside from the Karen Woleck Woleck storyline, what were some things that Gordon Russell wrote on One Life to Live. To me, the best writing he did (away from Dark Shadows) was the introduction of the Vernon family.
