  1. I do not think that Ida had any onscreen death. Efforts to share knowledge is always welcomed!
  2. It did not seem or sound to be Ann Williams to me, either. I just attributed this to the age and the condition of the recording.
  3. i think that Andrea was the best role for the late Joan Copeland. I did not see her on Love of Life or The Edge of Night, but I saw her in everything else she did following Search for Tomorrow (which is where I first saw her).
  4. On Search for Tomorrow, Eunice's second husband was Doug Martin. Doug learned that Vietnam veteran Scott Phillips was his son. Laurie was a girl that he met who lived with her very traditional grandmother. Laurie had earlier (prior to meeting Scott) given birth to a son out of wedlock. I cannot remember her son;s name. I imagine that Eunice and Laurie were talking about Doug and Scott and possibly their relationship with one another. The late Ann Williams played Eunice Twining Martin. The late Kenneth Harvey played her husband Doug. Peter Simon played Scott, and Kelly Wood played Laurie.
  5. This topic has been discussed before, although I do not know it were here or not. What soap opera characters committed suicide? I do remember that Naomi Vernon on One Life to Live (played by Teri Keane) gave hints to her family (Dr. Will, Brad, and Samantha) that she was considering killing herself. However, she did not intend to do that. She took an overdose of something while thinking that one of them would find her before she died. (She was very jealous of the relationship between her husband and Jenny Siegel, R. N.) She was only found (I think by Brad) after she was dead. Laura Cooper on Somerset. It has been said that Claire English Cassen Shea killed herself by walking in front of an oncoming bus. This was never said on the show, but some people have said that it was implied. On the serial, The Young Marrieds, the final scene of the final episode was shown going into a closet to presumably kill himself. What happened to the character what never resolved. On All My Children, Devon Shepherd considered suicide upon learning that she had lost Dan Kinnecott to the villianess Brooke English. She went to a bridge, but decided not to kill herself. (This may have been after she learned that she and Wally were expecting. I cannot remember with certainty.) My big question is about Ryan's Hope. Did Ken George Jones commit suicide? Any remarks on this subject will be appreciated.
  6. I am also wondering about an actress from Ryan's Hope. She is Megan McCracken (Nancy Feldman #2). She was the prettiest of the three actresses who played Nancy, but she was on the show for only about a week.
  7. Faulkner, actor Michel Keaton (who was nominated) is the former husband of the late Caroline McWilliams (Janet Norris) on The Guiding Light.
  8. I heard that the whole ABC cast was in favor of the additional airing on late night television, but that Donald May demanded that his salary be doubled. That demand stopped the idea of late night airings of the show.
  9. I don't think that the producers of the show really knew what type of show this should be. They had tried on CBS to make a success of the serial opera The Secret of Midland Heights with both a good older cast and a good younger cast. (Three of the older performers were great on daytime soap operas and serials: Bibi Beesch, Mark Pinter, and Robert Hogan. The production company (Lorimar) wanted, I think, to display some of this younger talent. So, a new show of sorts was created. And, in the new show, they added more daytime talent - Beatrice Straight, (Love of Life), Mary Frann (Return to Peyton Place), , Michael Zaslow (Search for Tomorrow, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, The Guiding Light, The Secret Strom), and Stephanie Braxton (The Secret Storm and All My Children). The Secret of Midland Heights was not the only failed attempt at a serial on CBS. The run of the late night serial Behind the Screen was also not successful. And, calling attention to Eight Is Enough (also on ABC) and that it was also a show with a younger cast, it would have seemed logical to have done what was done.
  10. I think that role of Tony Barclay on All My Children could have been played by either Mark Arnold (The Edge of Night and One Life to Live) or Burke Moses (Loving and One Life to Live). Tony was played by Brent Barrett, and I think that he could have played Gavin on The Edge of Night or Curtis on Loving well. Mark Arnold replaced Ted Marceaux as Rob Crown/Coronel on One Life to Life, but (even though I liked Mark Arnold on The Edge of Nignt), I far preferred Ted Marceaux as Rob.
  11. There are many performers who, over the years, I have wondered about since the performer departed his role on a various soap opera. I would like to start a topic on these various performers. Hopefully, some questions will be answered! The first performer that I would like to ask about is Ron Martin (David Grant #1 in the premiere cast of Somerset).
  12. I never remember seeing Mr. Williams in any commercial. I think that John Glover (Search for Tomorrow) would have been a good Morlock on The Edge of Night. He also could have played several characters will on Dark Shadows.
  13. Actress Joan Copeland, who played Mary Appleton on The Edge of Night in 1959, has passed away. Joan Copeland, Broadway Star and Soap Opera Actress, Dies at 99 ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett C Joan Copeland, who graced both the stage and screen for decades as a Broadway star and soap opera actress, died the morning of Jan. 4 in her New York City home, Copeland’s family confirmed to Variety. She was 99. Copeland’s career included performances on numerous daytime soap operas — including “Search for Tomorrow” (1967-72) “Love of Life” (1960-63), “The Edge of the Night” (1956) and “How to Survive a Marriage” (1974). As one of the first members of The Actors Studio, she made her Broadway debut in 1948 as Nadine in “Sundown Beach.” Her other Broadway credits include “Detective Story,” (1950) “Coco,” (1969) and “45 Seconds From Broadway” (2001). Copeland was the sister of playwright Arthur Miller, who died in 2005. She appeared in one of Miller’s plays, “The American Clock” (1980), a performance for which she earned a Drama Desk award. “From the time I was a little girl I had the stage bug,” Copeland told The New York Times in 1981. “It was like a big dream, like kids who want to fly to the moon today. Perhaps I was unconsciously influenced by my brother. He had made it. I was desperate to get out of the dreariness I was living in.” Still, Copeland worked to separate her career from her brother’s — which influenced her to take on the stage name “Joan Copeland.” “I did not want to trade on my brother’s name,” she told the Times. While most of Copeland’s career was on the Broadway stage and in television series, she also made it to the big screen. Her first film, Paddy Chayefsky’s “The Goddess” (1958), was said to be based on Miller’s second wife (and Copeland’s onetime sister-in-law) Marilyn Monroe. In addition, Copeland appeared in “Roseland” (1977), “A Little Sex” (1982), “The Object of My Affection” (1998) and as the voice of Tanana in Disney’s “Brother Bear” (2003). She is survived by her son, Eric Kupchik, and her niece, actress Rebecca Miller.
  14. Please excuse my mistake about Mr. Bryygmann. Who is "Mr. Colt 45?"
  15. Ray Fulmer (Ray on The Guiding Light; Martin Nell on Somerset) would have been a good Lincoln Tyler on All My Children. Billy Dee Williams (The Guiding Light; As the World Turns) would have been a good Tyrone on All My Children. Ed Bryggman (As the World Turns) would have been quite interesting as Barnabas/Bramwell on Dark Shadows.
  16. Evidently, the Decades network has bought only the two-year cycle running from April or May of 1967 to two years later in 1969. I am sure that no network would choose to air those episodes only if they had the entire run of the show. I know that I stopped watching the Decades reruns after the two-year run of the show had been run.
  17. I remember when her version of The Glass Menagerie aired. I was, at the time, a freshman in college. Katherine Hepburn played Amanda in the same production.
  18. Yes. I heard Jack Stauffer (Dr, Chuck Tyler #1) being interviewed, and he said that Diana de Vegh (the original Ann) was so nervous and scared that she proclaimed that if God would get her through the first episode that she would never act (maybe on this show or maybe permanently) ever again. So, Joanna Miles, who had played Geri McGrath Pollock #2 on The Edge of Night (which is said to have been a favorite show of both Agnes Nixon and her husband) became the new Ann. I have wondered for years about how these soap operas make replacement casting decisions in such a rapid manner. I know that Erika Slezak had auditioned for ABC to play Mary Kinnecott, R. N. (played by Jacqueline Bosworth and Susan Blanchard), but One Life to Live hired her to replace Joanne Dorian as Victoria Lord on One Life to Live one afternoon and that she was in the studio the next day. It makes me wonder if Ms. Miles had perhaps auditioned for the role of Ann, or was this unexpected and she had not auditioned for the role. Sometimes, these roles are said to have the performers who were the first choice replace the performers who were originally hired. Here are two examples: James Hall created the role of Willie Loomis on Dark Shadows, but the show was not happy with his performances (which I thought were quite good - except for his pronouncing the name of his character "Willie LOO Mis with a long "o") so they hired John Karlen as Willie #2. But I have heard that Mr. Karlen had been the first choice all along to play Willie. Likewise, Kari Gibson was Dixie Cooney #1 on All My Children. Cady McClain replaced her as Dixie, but I heard that Ms. McClain was the first choice to play Dixie. I know that the character of Kate Martin (also on All My Children) was created with the late Kay Campbell (who had retired from The Edge of Night as Rose #3; again, she probably had been seen by Ms. Nixon and her husband, although Ms. Nixon had written for Ms. Campbell on The Guiding Light). Ms. Campbell declined the role, and another actress was cast. This actress was later replaced by actress Christine Thomas. I have been told that Kate was to be written off All My Children, but Ms. Campbell was asked once again and agreed to play Kate. She remained on the show until her death. Going back to Dark Shadows, both Mark Allen and George Mitchell were in the original cast. However, they were replaced by David Ford and Thayer David. I wonder if Mr. Ford and Mr. David had auditioned for the roles of Sam Evans and Matthew Morgan. (In the case of Mr. Mitchell as Matthew, casting Thayer David to replace him was extremely good. As far as I know, he had never appeared on a soap operas although his wife had been on The Edge of Night and The Nurses.) Mr. Allen was replaced due to sexual complaints from some of the actresses (and I don't think that David Ford had appeared on a soap opera previously), but Mr. Mitchell was replaced because he choked on some unpleasant eggs which were being used as props. How were these roles so quickly recast. I wonder about the replacement of Kathryn Hayes as Leslie Jackson Bauer Bauer, R. N. on The Guiding Light (by Barbara Rodell) or Geraldine Count as Kim Reynolds (by Kathryn Hayes) on As the World Turns. If anyone knows stories about how replacements came to the soap opera screens (including temporary recasts), I hope that these will be shared. I am very anxious to know about these.
  19. Yes, I never cared for Richard van Vleet or Peter Bergman when they were playing doctors on All My Children. On The Guiding Light, my favorite Dr. Ed Bauer was Robert Gentry, but I also liked Mart Hulswit a lot. By the time Richard van Vleet was playing Ed, I was no longer watching the program.
  20. I watched a movie last Saturday with the late actress Lee Remick. She never was on television (unless it was early in her career), but she would have made an EXCELLENT Rae Woodard on Ryan's Hope! Also, Denny Albee would have bee a good Dr. Ed Bauer on The Guiding Light.
  21. I had been thinking that Richard Baccus had appeared on Another World as Ted Bancroft #2 prior to being on For Richer/For Poorer. Did I get confused about the order. (He was really good on Ryan's Hope and should not have been written off.) I had forgotten that David Knapp was on the show. I remember that he was on All My Children in 1984 in a day role. Does anyone know what Tom Happer is now doing? I heard that he was the owner of a bed-and-breakfast inn in New England, but I do not know if that is correct. (He had appeared on Dark Shadows near that show's run as the grandson of Thayer David )
  22. Judith Barcroft was the third actress to play Ann Tyler on All My Children, but following her was a hard job for any actress. I thought that Gwen Gilliss (possibly misspelled) was an excellent choice to play Ann #4.
  23. I know that I have seen two books based on All My Children and at least one based on One Life to Live. It seems as though I heard that was a book based on Search for Tomorrow, but I am not sure.
  24. The Edge of Night on ABC and Somerset on NBC was the very first time that two soap operas both owned by Procter and Gamble aired opposite each other. Plus, Somerset was also airing at noon (Cental Time) on NBC.
  25. Erica remained with Tom because he was the first (maybe only) true love. She and Nick only became attracted to each other after the flop of her disco and her divorce.
