A Different World (TV Series)
Billboard 10/27/90 NEW YORK- Jasmine Guy shares only two personality traits with the Southern belle character Whitley Gilbert she plays on NBC-TV's "A Different World ": She was born for the spotlight and she loves to talk. And with a new, eponymously titled album on Warner Bros. Records, the refreshingly down to earth Guy has plenty to talk about. "Try Me," her uptempo first single, written and produced by Full Force, is rocketing up the Hot R &B Singles chart. Apparently, the public- already familiar with Guy as a TV personality -has been pleasantly surprised by her vocal ability. And so were the many producers- Raymond Jones, Rex Salas, Full Force, Oliver Leiber, Donald Robinson, Mic Murphy of the System, Timmy Gatling, and the Untouchables with DJ Eddie F and Nevelle -who worked on the project with Leonard Richardson, executive producer and Warner Bros. director of A &R. "She's already coming into a recording career with a built in audience of people who know her as Whitley. But she is totally different from Whitley," says Richardson, who also notes that Guy is among the most professional artists he has worked with in the studio. The various producers had certain expectations of her based on that character, says Richardson, but "when they went into the studio, they were like- Wow!" The resultant album is a mix of musical styles and moods, from the slammin' first single to hip-hop beats, smooth ballads, and the jazzy "More Love," which features Marcus Miller on bass and Branford Marsalis on saxophone. "I thought it was a beautiful song and it was different from the other songs on the album," says Guy. "But I said, So what? I have diverse tastes and I'm sure other people do. I'm sure they would like to take a jazz break. And it came out so nice, I felt like a grown up when I came home with it. I thought, 'Yeeaahh -now I sound like a woman!' " Singing is just one more facet of a multidimensional performing career for Guy, who attended a performing -arts high school in Atlanta. After graduation, Guy concentrated on dance and received a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey Dance Center in New York, where she later became a regular member of its junior company. She was also cast as a principal dancer on the television show "Fame" for one season before returning to Ailey. Her vocal training came in handy as she was cast in such on- and off -Broadway shows as "Leader Of The Pack," "Beehive," the Motown revue "Dancin' In The Streets," and the revivals of "The Wiz" and "Bubblin' Brown Sugar" in the mid '80s. Wanting to get more screen time,Guy did some soap operas and episodic TV dramas, such as "The Equalizer." "I was Miss Prostitute," says Guy, who has also been seen in Eddie Murphy's "Harlem Nights," of her TV roles. "And I said, 'OK, can I go for a regular role now, please ?' I never went up for comedic roles, which is the irony of Whitley." And Guy didn't snap up the role of Whitley in a flash, either -there were several auditions and callbacks before the producers decided that she could be an effective neme sis to the Denise Huxtable character on "A Different World." In the meantime, Guy appeared in Spike Lee's "School Daze," as one of the Wannabes, and performed on "I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight," the slinky single from the film soundtrack. Guy had long wanted to record an album, however. A showcase she performed in Los Angeles in 1987 netted her more label interest than she was prepared to handle at the time, she admits. She finally put together a demo last year and got her Warner Bros. deal. Says Guy: "I didn't want to go into this big company like I was a know -it -all. The first album was very much a give and take situation. I took a lot of advice from Leonard Richardson and I respect his opinion a lot about music. And he gave me respect as well." Touring will have to wait until next summer, when she has finished taping "A Different World" for the season, says Guy, who is currently doing radio and retail promotional appearances. She adds that though "Jasmine Guy" is her first album length reçording project, she found she enjoyed it much more than she had anticipated. "Being in the studio, I felt more myself than ever," she says. "Going back to the show for the fourth season was a shock to my system this year. I said, 'Oh right -that accent, that thing.' I was really in a different, 'Different World.' "

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
It was offbeat but quite intriguing, fitting in with the whole Gothic New Orleans vibe-separate from Henderson. And they played it straight - no campy vibe. This was the Corringtons. The Eerie Truth Behind Search’s Occult Phenomenon!" by Diana Whitley Rona Barrett’s Daytimers August 1979 Search For Tomorrow has introduced the world of the occult to daytime viewers. Dark Shadows came close but in a highly stylized, Gothic manner complete with vampires and eerie effects. However, Search is treating it in a realistic manner, devoid of anything sensational or "gimmicky." The writers and producers painstakingly researched their material, and have a psychic, Alexander Murray, to advise them. "The intent is to realistically show the kinds of things that do happen, and to work them out in a story in a metaphysically correct way," Alex explained. Alex is a gentle, cheerful young man with a good sense of humor. Nonetheless. He is one of New York’s foremost people in the field, and his credentials include over 30 trance sessions at the United Nations, an extensive international clientele, and a busy schedule as a lecturer, teacher, and seminar reader. He has also been the subject of research projects for the American Society for Psychical Research, successfully demonstrating clairvoyance, out-of-body experiences, psychokinesis, and the banishing of poltergeist phenomenon. Finding Mr. Murray was production coordinator Bonnie Bogand’s job. She was to locate someone who was well versed in all aspects of the occult to be a consultant on the staff. "I started at the occult bookstores. I went to the two biggest ones in New York, and spent a couple of hours at each. I was so intrigued by all the reading material there is on the subject I surrounded myself on the floor with books and read them until the manager finally came over and said I couldn’t read them there! "The big problem was to find someone that was serious," she continued. "There are rip offs in every field, and the occult is certainly no exception. We wanted to treat this very seriously, and not as a gimmick to get more viewers, so we didn’t want any sensationalism," she explained. "The second problem was to find someone articulate, possibly with a flair for drama, who could relate well to the writers, directors, and actors, because this person was going to be involved every step of the way. He would help with the specifics, such as the technique that a psychic would use in reading tarot cards or giving a séance—gestures, incantations, whether or not her eyes would be closed. He would be involved in anything to do with the physicality of what happens, such as lighting or costuming. "He would also have a series of meetings with the writers, going over the story line, telling them whether or not they were being far-fetched, exploring the possibilities of voodoo. When we decided to have a fire caused by lightning, we did it in a way that the audience could decide for themselves whether or not Tante Helene started the fire, but we determined that there is a basis in occult truth for a power to do this." …After Bonnie secured a directory listing everyone in the country who is involved in the occult, she called organizations like Foundation Faith, the Parapsychology Institute of America, and the American Society for Psychical Research. It is illegal for these institutions to recommend anyone, but if she gave them names, they would indicate their opinion. The only problem was that none of them seem to agree on any one person. Like most other fields, the occult tends to have specialists, and Search needed someone who was well versed in all aspects from séances to tarot, so many people were immediately eliminated. Finally, it was narrowed down to Alexander Murray, so Bonnie made an appointment for a séance, without telling him who she was or why she was interested. "I didn’t want to go alone, so my boyfriend went with me. It wasn’t at all what I expected. I thought it would be pitch black, with special effects like a fan blowing the curtains and a black cat. It was just a group of people sitting around the room in chairs-not even holding hands around a table. Alex conducted the session, opening it with some incantations and prayers. Then his mind left his body and he became about seven different people, with different accents and sometimes even different languages. Hebasically spoke about love and a philosophy of life. There was nothing ugly or scary. "One thing happened that was very exciting. He has a spirit guide, who allows the other spirits to some and go out of his body without becoming possessed by an evil spirit. She (his spirit guide is a woman) went around the room and told everyone something about their vibrations and auras. When she came to me she said she saw someone in my aura, and that it was an aunt named Helen. I told everyone at the office and they were all really excited." After the séance, Mary Ellis Bunim, the producer, also went to see Alex, and she was unequivocably chosen as the show’s consultant. One of the things Alex has done is to give Jane White, the actress who plays the central occult figure "Tante Helene," a shibboleth to protect herself and the rest of the staff from evil visitations. "A shibboleth is a protection that you may do in the form of a mantra. Even when you play act, you are touching upon the real thing. There is a tradition that every time the play Macbeth is done there is a curse on it and something goes wrong. There are a lot of magical incantations in that play, and the actors may not know it, but every time they say them they can release a lot of energy. "I explained to Jane that even though she is only acting, there is power in words, and she should make a clear distinction between herself and "Tante Helene," so I gave her something to protect herself and the cast, so that the spirit world would understand it was just a play. We didn’t want any weird happenings, like tapes being erased or flats falling over, and that kind of thing has been known to happen." In a similar vein, Alex explained that the other characters in Henderson are going to be affected by their contact with the occult world, even though they may not believe in it or be aware of it. "They come into contact with ‘Tante Helene’ on a casual basis, but once they make the contact it is like opening Pandora’s box. They’re involved whether they know it or not. Once exposed, it is like radiation, and the outcome will be worked out in the story."

Billboard 1981 LOS ANGELES -Gladys Knight is apparently to try her hand at an acting career again. She has reportedly been offered a guest spot on one of her favorite daytime soap operas, "All My Children." She recently met with the show's producer, who offered her the role. Knight joins a list of singers, including Sammy Davis Jr. (an avid soap watcher), who appear on popular daytime programs. Knight first threw her hat into the film world a few years ago, when she starred in the ill -fated "Pipe Dreams," a love story based in Alaska and centering around the pipeline there. Although the film, in which Knight and the Pips had a personal financial investment, received less than enthusiastic reviews, Knight's performance garnered higher ratings.

March 83 Billboard Magazine. NEW YORK -An in depth cross promotion between songwriters, a performer, a record company and a soap opera has Stephanie Mills appealing on NBC -TV's "Search For Tomorrow" this week and next to perform a song associated with two of the series' stars. The song, "Do You Love Him," will be on Mills' new Phil Ramone produced album, "Merciless," on Casablanca. The song has been played as background music on the program for about six months, but apparently a number of interested parties thought it would be a good idea to have a well -known singer perform it, especially in the wake of the success of "Baby, Come To Me" from the soap opera "General Hospital." That song, performed by Patti Austin and James Ingram, reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Neither of the singers of "Baby, Come To Me" actually appeared on "General Hospital," but Mills, hoping to further an acting career begun in Broadway's "The Wiz," has been written into "Search For Tomorrow" for two weeks as a local girl returning home. According to Betsy Durkin Matthes, who wrote the lyrics for ¢ "Do You Love Him," mention of 4 Mills' new album will be made on mthe program. "All the various publicity departments are in sync," she says. Her co-writer, Barbara Morr, adds, "This is a chance for us to get more exposure for the song. Patti Austin's record was virtually revived from the dead due to expsoure on `General Hospital'." That song came on the Hot 100 in April, 1982, peaked at number 73 and disappeared, only to return last October -and ultimately to reach No. I last month. According to Mills, no decision has yet been made as to whether "Do You Love Him" will be a single. Mills explains that she was sent a tape of the song and asked to appear on the show. She agreed "because being associated with a soap opera can help sell more records, but more importantly I want to expose my acting abilities. People still consider me a little girl from `The Wiz' days."

ARTICLE: ‘Days of our Lives’ Renewed for Two Additional Seasons at Peacock; Soap to Celebrate 60th Anniversary Season
Ken Corday's loyalty and persistence with Days is indeed admirable, but to me it always comes off as wanting to preserve his parents legacy than any true love for Days as a part of the soap opera genre. His parents worked on radio soaps and previous TV soaps alongside people like Irna Phillips. Ken came to Days only because it was the family business and he saw how his mom stepped in and carried on her husband's work. To me he has never really shown a true understanding or appreciation for the genre. He wants to put his faith in whatever the current writing/production teams push and whatever it takes to keep the show on the air. Which is fair enough and has worked but still....

Peter Bergman 20th Anniversary interview 2009 On Nov. 27, Peter Bergman will celebrate his 20th year playing Jack Abbott on CBS’s top-rated The Young and The Restless. The veteran soap star (he previously played Dr. Cliff Warner on ABC’s All My Children) talked exclusively to EW.com about what it was like to originally assume the role, how he felt about his character talking to a ghost, and whether he and the cast believed that Eric Braeden would ever really quit the show. EW: What was it replacing Terry Lester, who had previously played Jack Abbott, 20 years ago? Peter Bergman: He had burned every bridge he could burn before he left. He had alienated pretty much everybody in the building. Had I showed up as anything less than an axe murderer, I would have been welcomed. That said, every lighting guy, every wardrobe person knew more about Jack Abbott than I did. That took some getting used to. Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) was very friendly to me but Eric Braeden was a big Terry Lester fan so his wasn’t the warmest welcome. From the start, Jack was a very angry character. We didn’t see his compassionate side for a long time. What was the journey like for you? The journey was an interesting one. I actually loved playing a careless, womanizing, and manipulative Jack for as long as I did. But one of the cool things about being on these shows is that characters grow and change. And I can tell you who the characters were who changed Jack Abbott: Nikki, followed by Phyllis – the least likely person ever to touch Jack’s heart — and then Sharon, who of all people, I think was a disaster on the writers’ part. It’s almost like they thought, ‘They both are basically in the same predicament. Put them together.’ I can remember the day Sharon Case sat in the dressing room with me and how we decided to make it believable. And I think we did a pretty respectable job. So three women changed this guy so much in these 20 years, so he’s a very different character now. Let’s talk about one of Jack’s most memorable scenes – sitting at his dying father’s bedside. It was far and away his most emotional experience. He still hasn’t recovered from that. He is still seeing his father in his office, in his home, in his car. He’s everywhere he goes. How did you react when the writers said, ‘By the way, you’re going to be seeing your dad’s ghost’? Oh my God. I’m on the one show that’s based in reality and suddenly I am in charge of the f—ing ghost storyline? Oh, great! But you know what? I was wrong. In the end, it worked. It was Jack’s conscience coming back to him. He had lost his conscience. You’ve been at this for a long time now. What do you think is going to happen to daytime dramas? I have good things to say about that. We are all going to get leaner, tighter, with smaller casts. Fewer sets. Tighter stories. Better-written stories than you see on the air [now]. And when they minimize the casts, they are going to cut away the bad acting. They are going to keep as many of the good actors as they possibly can. Get rid of the scenes we didn’t need to see, like ‘Well, let’s follow the maid and what her life is like. Let’s see who her boyfriend is.’ No! Let’s focus on Victor and Nikki and Katherine and Jack and Ashley and Phyllis and Nick and Sharon. I know you are pretty optimistic but there are a lot of predictions that we’ll see another soap opera die in the next five years. We will. We’re on the top floor of a sinking ship at Y&R. But I do think that when we are talking about seven, eight daytime dramas, do you have to replace all of them? That’s too much programming. What the f— are the networks going to do with a giant hole in daytime television? Eric Braeden has been very vocal about his recent salary negotiations, especially about how he was being told to take a pay cut – or else. Had you experienced the same type of negotiation? Everybody on this show was asked to share in some of the burden and Eric was no exception. Did you really expect that Eric was going to leave? There were days that we all thought he was going to be gone. In the end it was fighting with a corporation, and the corporation was going to win. It wasn’t whether or not they were going to fold. It was always whether or not Eric was going to agree to come back for a lesser salary. Are you going to retire as Jack? I will retire from daytime television as Jack, yes. With All My Children moving to Los Angeles, everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, well, that would be fun. They’d probably love to have you back.’ And I think, ‘No … that’s a different character.’ I get to play one of the truly great characters in daytime television.
