  2. @Donna L. BridgesI'm interested in the Agnes Nixon/Brighter Day connection. I have never read that she was going to be headwriter. Did she mention it in her book? Is that where the talk of the mother/daughter character came from?
  3. Didn't all cast members renegotiate when the show went to an hour? Did the new contracts supersede the previous eg If the previous contract was signed in Dec 78 for 3 years till Dec 81,the new contract signed in say Jan 80 would be a new 3 yr term.
  4. Yes ,although Y&R was a little shaky at that time, there was still Bill Bell at the helm and a lot of familiar characters to ease viewers through the transition.
  5. Variety reports Dec 78 that Jaime Lyn Bauer has signed a new contract with CBS which included 'telefilms and episodic outings' as well as CBS 'to eye series possibilities' I assume that JLB signed a 5 yr contract when she started Dec 73 and those inducements were added to get her to sign on again. But like performers before and after, very little came of it. It seems the promises made were not really followed through and the contracts vague enough that the performer had no real redress. Do we know of any primetime roles that JLB had in that time? I know she did a Tom Selleck pilot'Boston & Killbride' and there is a TV movie'Mysterious Island of Beautiful Women' Was that CBS? Maybe JLB was so busy with Y&R and personal stuff she didn't really pursue much?
  6. Variety reported daytime ratings for week ending March 7 1980 What is interesting is that the afternoon speciais were included, which I have never seen reported before . They were shown over a number of years pre-empting the 4pm shows. I always wondered how they did and if they were shown mainly for good PR. Anyway, this week shows that they did score excellent numbers although not the desirable demos that advertisers wanted. 1. ABC Afternoon Special 'What Are Friends For?' 2. GH 3. NBC Special Treat ? 4. AMC 5. OLTL 6. GL 7. Y&R 8. CBS Library Special ? 9. AW 10. ATWT
  7. Search was reaping the benefits of the Corringtons stories that had begun in August 78 and building, particularly Travis and Liza. Unfortunately the momentum wasn't sustained. They had Travis and Liza marry, which shortcircuited that couples story potential. And their follow up stories eg Beau/Cissy had none of the appeal of their initial run. Guess that like a lot of writers they were able to come into a stale show and inject new energy but couldn't really follow through. And the next writers were worse. That was it for SFT. Also interesting to see 2 30 min shows in the Top 5.
  8. @JAS0N47 This info is an amazing gift for so many of us. Thanks again.
  9. In a SOD article a few weeks back they had a performer from each soap detail a typical day. The GH actor (can't remember who) was the only one who talked about taping into the evening. The other shows were all done and dusted by the afternoon. So GH somehow makes the longer working day economical.
  10. Paradise Bay Sgt Atwater ... Walker Edminston ???... Sharon Louise 1966 ???... Stanley Farrar 1966 ???... Virginia Capers 66 ???...Robert Slade Robert Lowery was a temp repacement for Hal March in March 66
  11. General Hospital ??? Ben Aliza Dec 65 Thought he might have played Humphrey Lamb but from an online photo he looks Black or mixed race so I don't think he would be cast in that role in 65.
  12. the ship has probably sailed on that one but a tribute to Beau/Brock could (should) have been done' Nikki, Esther, Jill, Ashley, Billy all had interactions and you could bring back Julia, Lorie, Leslie, Nina,Gina, Mac Considering he never got laid on the show Brock worked his way through a lot of GC ladies!
  13. On Search it was the explosion at the Tourneur plant and the fall out-Carolyn blinded and Laine up on charges of criminal negligence, the possibility of Gary and Laine's affair being exposed etc.
  14. After the Honeymoon CBS spin off from My Three Sons. Robbie. Katie and the triplets move to a SF apartment complex with Pat Carroll as the manager and Richard X Slattery as her husband. 17. Daytime TV gives the rankings for the last two weeks in October 1971. 1. ATWT 41% 2. GH 35% 3. DAYS 35% 4. Edge 34% 5. Doctors 34% 6. Search 36% 7. AW 32% 8. GL 32% 9. LIAMST 31% 10. Secret Storm 27%
  18. I agree that some of those movie pitches seem an odd fit for soaps. The Seven Year Itch for example, just seems a bizarre proposal. Sunset Boulevard? How on earth would that work?
  19. Stefano as written by Pat Falken Smith was a charismatic, villianous character whose misdeeds bordered on the criminal .Once she left Days went to the campy crime stuff and Stefano was turned into a cardboard villian. Mascolo stated as much which is why he left. And then Days started on the merry go round of bringing him back over and over, in ridiculous stories. Marland brought back James and the first return worked but then once he kept coming back and going unpunished the supervillian tag applied I guess.
  20. Looking at those 1980 ratings had me reflecting on the shows and the fact that 1980 was a poor year storywise for most of the soaps. NBC -Days restructure was a disaster, AW was trying to regroup from the loss of Lemay, the 90 min format and the Texas spin off, Texas itself was off to a shaky start and TD was struggling to come up with viable couples and stories. CBS- Y&R lost focus in the move to an hour,ATWT under the Dobsons wasn't firing and SFT lost the momentum of the Corringtons initial impact. Only GL under Marland seemed to be in a good place storywise. ABC -AMC ,OLTL and GH were strong,RH not so much as the original concept and characters were wearing thin. EON continued to deliver under Slesar. And for the most part, the ratings reflected that.
  21. Best that subsequent regimes just had Traci adopt a child. Or maybe a reveal that Steve had a daughter who turns up and becomes a surrogate daughter to Traci. The back from the dead (Phillip/Diane) or doubles (Mariah/Amanda) stories have been poorly constructed and only the Diane reveal -as nonsensical as it was -has had any real impact. It speaks to the incompetence of TPTB that those decisions were made in the first place (excluding Phillip)
  22. Have to disagree here. That sort of character ruined many a soap.
