wasn't Dina's Intro the same as Alexis's too with the dressed in black/veil! :D

Yeah it was. I haven't seen the full episode, only a clip from a promo that was on YT.

I remember reading that Aaron Spelling was a huge fan of Bill Bell and his writing. That was one of the reasons he chose Y&R for his 1983 film Mr. Mom where Michael Keaton becomes addicted to watching it. In the 90's when Spelling came out with Sunset Beach he said he wanted it be like a Bell soap.

There was at one point rumors of a feud between the two.

I remember there were rumors about Bill Bell and Aaron Spelling having beef in the late 1990s, around the time of the Hunter Tylo lawsuit. There was also actor swapping between Y&R/B&B and Spelling's shows of the time.

I love BD's look here too! she was still her 70's anti-heroine Jill rather then the "Alexis Carrington" Jill a couple years later

Interesting that you brought up Alexis Carrington, because when I watched the 1984 episodes I got the impression Bill Bell was attempting to create his own Alexis in Dina. Think about it. Dina walks away from her husband and children and lives a jet set life, then remarries a wealthy man, eventually becomes widowed, and inherits a corporation.

Watched the 12/26/84 ep – it was interesting/sad to see Victor and Nikki in bed together. It seems like they had such a short happy marriage before things fell apart. They joked around about Nikki “taking care” of Jack and Victor “taking care” of Ashley, but that is indeed what happened and what split them apart.

The beginning of the eternal quadrangle and the eternal feud...

I can't believe DR was on the show for less than 2 years. His character influenced plot for the next 40 years!

Phillip Chancellor II was part of the canvas for only 2 years. John Considine originated the role in 1973. Donnelly Rhodes took over in 1974 and remained until the character was killed off in 1975.

Firing Ellen Parker as Maureen Bauer to free up money to pay for Justin Deas as Buzz (or so the rumor goes)

It was posted in the "They Almost Became" thread that GL offered the role of Buzz Cooper to Terry Lester but he turned it down and instead took Royce on ATWT. Perhaps Justin Deas wasn't GL's original choice but his casting was another Friend of Jill incident.

IMO, GL's true savior in 1989 was Robert Calhoun

To this day, Calhoun never gets the credit for his work at ATWT or GL. His ATWT is overshadowed by praise for Marland (and Marland's work was not as strong with Laurence Caso as EP, IMO), and he's overlooked for his GL contributions because JFP ended taking a lot of credit for things he help set in motion.

I, for one, revere Calhoun and am grateful for the fine work he did on ATWT and TGL. We needed more EPs like him and fewer like JFP.

    Calhoun gets credit from me.

Agree with all of this. If P&G were the ones behind replacing Robert Calhoun w/ JFP, then that was one of the worst decisions they ever made. Yes, JFP's first year saw a ratings increase, but as we all know she did long term damage that GL never really recovered from.

You think Lucious and Cookie will get their payback on the fall finale?

I don't know about anyone else, but it's jarring to see Phylicia Rashad as a villainess. She'll always be Claire Huxtable to me.

  8. Taye Diggs was on The Talk this past Friday and Sheryl Underwood brought up his time on GL; she mentioned his character's name was Damian Sugar Hill. I thought Taye Diggs's GL character was named Adrian. I never saw Taye Diggs's GL episodes when they originally aired (1997 I think), only bits and pieces online.

Bill Bell loved 'girls from the wrong side of the tracks who craved the good life' trope as much as Agnes Nixon.

Bill Bell's most notable are Jill and Brooke, and to a lesser extent Nina and Sharon. Bradley Bell used that element for Amber and MAB used that element for Chloe.

Lance was more suave and sophisticated and had a laid-back, confident charm, whereas Lucas was less refined and had a quick temper, but was highly passionate and very loyal.

Bill Bell took qualities from the Foster and Prentiss sons and used them on B&B for the Forrester sons: Ridge, a Snapper/Lance hybrid, and Thorne, a Greg/Lucas hybrid.

Funny that John McCook played one of the Prentiss sons and then the father of the Forrester sons.

It's amazing to see all of these rare glimpses of a very special year for the show, and I say special because of the major transition that's happening.....

Not just the cast purge, but the EP change as well. John Conboy left for Capitol and H. Wesley Kenney took over, having previously worked with Bill Bell at Days.

1983 was also a bit of transition, as there were some major cast changes that year too: Andrea Evans replaced Lilibet Stern as Patty, Tracey Bregman arrived as Lauren, Brenda Dickson returned as Jill. I know Deborah Adair joined the cast of Dynasty in 1983, but did she leave Y&R by her own choice or was she terminated in order for Brenda Dickson to return?

The 1982-1987 period really set in motion a lot of what is still felt today, mainly the eternal triangle (quadrangle really) and the eternal feud. I don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I feel that it was H. Wesley Kenney that laid all the groundwork for Y&R's rise to #1 but Ed Scott that ended up getting all the credit. Granted, I didn't see a lot of the 1980s live as my Y&R watching then was limited to school breaks so I'm going by what I remember live, what I saw years later online, and from recap archives/books/soap magazines.
