From These Roots
Here is what Matt P. Smith had to say about From These Roots:

A World Apart
I wonder if Katherine Phillips is still alive, and why her and Irna left the show so soon. I think a couple articles I've seen on this suggest Irna happily helped her daughter out at ABC to stick it to CBS for their interference at ATWT and LIAMST. I recall one poster on the old WOST site talked about the three ABC soaps that debuted in 1970 and said they felt A World Apart was far superior in quality to AMC. Maybe A World Apart should have aired on CBS, but the concept reminds me of the long lost P&G soap From These Roots.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
It's funny I watched ATWT a good five of six years as a kid before I ever paid attention to the closing credits. I remember it was not long after after switchover from the spinning globe to replaying the day's scenes and I was kinda not paying attention when I heard this "This is Dan Region, inviting to join us again Monday for As The World Turns". I was shocked as I wondered how long this had been going on. Yet it also confirmed my suspicions that Albuquerque was airing ATWT a day-behind(at 10AM Mountain) because this happened on a Monday! Yet it made the show so much more personal to me.

Is that why Kinkead left the show at the end of '87? That wouldn't surprise me given her stormy relationship with the show in the '90s and her ability to speak out and openly criticize the bad writing plaguing her character. Gina Tognoni's first scene was with Jerry ver Dorn actually when she was making a phone call home to check in on things at the same time Cassie was getting weird credit card charges and had realized someone was using her identity.

It's funny 1982 seems to be a lost/transitional year for GL compared to 1980, 81, 83, and 84. Maybe it was that awful disco theme. I'm not familiar with the Helena character who was she? The actress looks a lot like Barbara Carrera(though she was from South America) in my opinion. Another 2005-2007 set that really bothered me was the 5th Street set. Yes it was fun and spacious at first but it quickly became overexposed and used ALL the time including for the Bauer Barbecue and Ross' funeral.

Look them up at your own risk^_^ The dream/memory one aired around Jonathan's '07 return, and I think the 1993 dream one was actually one of the last ones they ever did before the big '08 changes airing in either Jan or Feb '08. The best one was the Mother's Day ep, if not for all the Jenna and Nadine interaction. Oh and bringing back Audrey Peters to play Sarah Shayne. Ugh now I've got the ugly green glass and plywood Cedars hospital set on my mind. In spite of the cheapness, I have never understood why the set they started using in 2006 looked so terrible and un-hospital like.

Pretty much illustrates my point--the ITL eps had self-contained stories that should have been written out over a period of time. I do remember the one about the cabin mainly because I knew Olivia and Frank wouldn't do it. I think the worst one I saw was the Thanksgiving 2007 episode. Or the one about Alan's dream-erasing drug. OR the one with Harley waking up to find it was 1993.

In 2006 a lot of them were good, like Reva's goodbye party, Mother's Day celebration etc. I don't think any of them in 2007 were good at all. I think the thing that ticked me off is often the episodes would contain a single event that was interesting and well written for the episode ie. Ross' funeral, the truth about Jeffery, the fire at the Beacon etc. but was only contained ONE episode instead of being written out for several weeks. I've got synopses for the Aug '95 episodes I have, and I'll start with the first ep I have which is dated to Friday, August 4, 1995. The major highlight of this features Tangie testifying against Alan, and Gilly breaking off her engagement to Sid:

Thing was though Kim Zimmer was back by the time Walker exited the show; given another six months Walker would have found herself been either in a very secondary role(which is was what Tangie always should have been) or pushed off the show altogether. The whole A-M/Tangie/Alan was boring and a little strange. The August 1995 eps I have that I recorded way back then feature pretty much the break-up of Alan and Tangie as well as Gilly giving back Sid the engagement ring; they had tied Sid/Gilly to Alan/Tangie over the zealous way Sid treated Tangie on the witness stand. Not to mention Sid handled Alan's bribe money to Brent. The Josh and Tangie story always struck me as strange especially the Roger angle. Actually Josh's return was pretty aimless until Reva's return. It's funny a while back I discovered old Usenet posts shortly after Santa Barbara's end on speculation of Zimmer returning to GL by the summer of '93. It was interesting because those users were fully anticipating her return and getting excited, even though a return didn't take place til two years later. I have read Cutter was intended to be a leading supercop hero and Mallet's replacement. For whatever reason, Cutter ended up remaining a back-burner character and aside from being tested with Mindy and Lucy and his fling with Tangie never had real story other than being a rent-a-cop. The actor Scott Hoxby popped up on Y&R a couple years ago playing that gangster Walter Palin.

I agree it was a thrilling storyline and it never became too campy either. I hated that Nadine's death was made worse by the fact no one knew she was dead until her body floated up like months later, they all thought she had simply started a new life somewhere else. Now Cutter's murder that was gruesome, writing MAR with his own blood and all. Poor Cutter he was always smitten with Mindy and Tangie. My only regret about Tangie's exit was it came right as Brent came back to town; if only she had just stayed on a little longer to be offed by Brent. The Nick and Susan story was great but it's a shame they didn't continue it, instead they written off together not long after the story ended. I agree with you Carl on Raines. Oh I think Raines could deliver sometimes and was very charming, being charming alone never took him far. Nothing against Raines because I liked him, but after seeing old clips of what Bernau and even Pilon could do in the role made me wish we had a stronger actor in the role. I'm also a bit surprised Raines was hired as he was a complete outsider to soaps, something unusual for Jill Farren Phelps isn't it?

I had been meaning to reply to this but I too in a strange way feel a strong connection to SFT. SFT has always struck me as being closer to ATWT and GL and from what I've seen and read I'm more interested in this show than Edge and would rather see reruns of Search than AW. Maybe because unlike AW after 35 years SFT kept its history intact. I wish I would have been alive to see SFT air alongside GL, ATWT, and Y&R. I don't think there was or has been such a line-up of powerhouse shows like that in daytime.

The discussion on Estelle made me look up the actress and then I found this tragic news. I had no idea she had just passed away three months ago: The Record obit Playbill obit I liked Blythe from what I've seen on her on SFT she reminded me a lot of Carmen Duncan so I wondered why she didn't do anything else on daytime.

The whole Amanda paternity thing was pretty lame and also confusing to me as well I didn't know much on GL history at that point in time aside from what I would read in the Soap mags or see on the GL Online Community page on Anybrowser. I believe the ones responsible for it was Victor Miller and Michael Conforti although it was right as B&E took over. I liked Toby Poser as Amanda because she could be such a funny, bitchy, and sarcastic antagonist but I always felt the show never used her properly and then her last year under B&E she was barely used at all. Roger and Reva? That's a pairing that should have happened! What would've Josh and Alan thought? It's interesting and perhaps a little tragic that GL EP's like Kobe, Willmore, Phelps, Rauch, and Wheeler were all quite welcomed and started off strong only to be hated by all by their exit. I think it was in the ATWT thread I mentioned the anecdote about Willmore's temperament. I've only heard good things about Robert Calhoun and his tenure, while I witnessed the disasters of Laibson and Conboy. Speaking of McTavish, how did you guys feel about Brent/Marion? The initial Brent story with Lucy and Tangie was kind of blah and I have a few eps from August 1995 around Tangie's exit where Brent is suppose to be dead and Tangie blames Alan for letting Brent escape justice after holding her hostage as Alan is going to an indictment hearing for aiding and abetting Brent.

JTS was a website that has definitely jumped the shark to where it is now...owned by TV Guide and yes that is very LOL worthy. Oddly enough SFK it was one of your posts that reminded me of it. Go back to the RIP Jacqueline Courtney thread in the DTS section. I had recanted a WOST poster's anecdote of a reaction to Wesley Ann Pfenning taking over from Susan Harney. When you said Kelly, all of those fascinating tales of soaps in the 70s and 80s came flowing back.

On this terribly boring Saturday off for me for whatever reason why looking through the thread on Courtney's passing from January but here's this for an anecdote and some juicy gossip. In the late 90s a person on the old Jump the Shark website commented they stopped watching the show after an encounter with Victoria Wyndham. Appearantly, Wyndham went to an ice cream shop in I believe it was in Connecticut or Rhode Island and created a scene, being quite nasty to the person's mother who owned the shop or something over the service. The poster vowed not to watch AW again. An interesting anecdote considering I've always thought VW to be a gracious woman off-screen with perhaps a few diva quirks here and there.

I enjoyed the later Andy/Nikki pairing the show did 1997/98 or so before Brewster left. The Nikki return was certainly off the chain, she really was a completely different character. Weirder too was Molly had just been recast after Kay jumped ship with that really annoying Christina Chambers actress, yet the actress playing Nikki looked, sounded, and acted A LOT like Leslie Kay and would have been a much better Molly. Weirder still is after several months of using her they simply wrote her out once TC came back from maternity leave. ATWT 2004 and Days 2007 are very comparable in both had a lot of potential yet the wrong, awful stories were told and Hoggie was fired by year's end. Still can't explain Dani's split-second return. Sleeping with Craig and calling him DADDY my god. There are good reasons I didn't watch the show much '07-'09.

I think Don did indeed appear when Ryder first came to town. It was sort of like Grant's brief reappearance after Eduardo's death. I think Ryder had a sister too and that she was named after Nancy or something like that. I never much cared for Ryder it ended my faves Jeremy&Nikki and well turned preppy school girl Dani into a pathological liar and eventually Craig's lover.

Really didn't know Michael Nader played Kevin Thompson. I only really have seen Nader's work on Dynasty, how was he on ATWT? Never saw his AMC role although I certainly recall all the juicy details and gossip from his drug arrests in the late 90s in the soap mags. I believe I've stated before through my readings on ATWT history I didn't understand the character Sandy's continuing presence on the show. I wonder if she was a popular character with the audiences in spite of the recasts. I think the anecdote goes that in the 90s Dagne Crane ran into a woman who told her "glad to see your out of prison" in reference to Sandy being in jail with Ellen story in the 60s. Its interesting what the Dobsons wrote in 1983 clicked but what they wrote in 1980/1981 didn't. Was the John/Dee story really a rip off of Roger and Holly on GL?

Y&R: Old Articles
Thanks and I agree! Like the April murdering Robert storyline its another of those forgotten Y&R storylines I was mesmerized by as a kid. Eve's death for me was haunting for me as well. I think a lot had to do with that it the whole story shook the Newman's to the core and ripped them apart. First you had Victor's past coming back to haunt him with Eve and a potential long lost son. Throw in the Victoria/Cole/Nikki triangle and the reveal right after Cole and Victoria eloped and the results were explosive.

I don't think it was the adultery of Bob and Kim that did them in I think it was the fact two sisters were pregnant by the same man at the same time. Even 40 years later such an event would still be frowned on and be fodder for Maury Povich. I feel bad for Bruder as she was only in her thirties playing a role with adult 30-something children and then grandchildren to boot. I guess that's why they tried to "youthenize" Ellen and the Stewart daughters in the early 80s after Dan died. I guess its also why Fulton had that grandmother clause in her contract into the late 80s. Still in one 1995 ep I have on tape Danni comes to visit Ellen and Nancy is there for coffee and both are dressed very similarly like two old ladies in spite of the 20+ year age difference in the two and Bruder being younger than Fulton and Hays.

Santoro seemed to at least according to IMDB to have moderately successful career out of making guest appearances on high profile shows up until his 1987 death. I know they later tried to make more ties to Paul with Stewart Channing but failed. Do we have any indication as to why when Phillips resumed writing the show in 1972 she was so reckless? Her grudge from LIAMST against CBS perhaps? Aside from some of the Kim/Bob/Jennifer stuff it has always sounded like nothing good and bizarre stuff came out of Phillips' last tenure which is why the show lost a lot of ground to the NBC Daytime powerhouse of the 70s. I guess that's why Hunt and Ellis are credited for saving ATWT and maintaining its lead even though they later certainly overstayed their welcome.

Y&R: Old Articles
I had seen some YT clips of Nikki and John O'Hurley's Jim kissing a while back it looked (and sounds) like such a weird story. Judging from the clips O'Hurley was made up to look much older than MTS. O'Hurley was later in talks to join B&B as Eric's brother but it never happened. I was going to ask but what did you guys think of Eve Howard's return and the re-introduction of Cole there in 1993?
