Y&R: Old Articles
I've always wondered why Beau Kayzer didn't stay permanetly as Brock when he was on recurring there in the late 80s and early 90s. His relationship with Gina may not have been the most exiting story but Brock like Paul was one of the good guys and I've always liked the nice easy friendliness between Kayzer and Walton.

I barely/don't remember much about Jill and Victor this would have been when I was much younger and only could watch Y&R in the summertime or during the holidays. I love seeing clips of Stephanie Williams' Amy and it's a shame she was soon phased out and didn't become one of Y&R's leading ladies. Then again, there's a whole world apart from Amy and Dru I could not see them interacting. Didn't know Lester had quit either, did he actually quit or just take a leave of absence? I wonder if that explains how noticebly different Lester is as Jack there '88-'89 as opposed to the early and mid-80s. Thanks for the info and insights DeeeDee. I just remember Victoria trying to expose them as a couple when they weren't. This was right when Davidson returned to the show in '99.

Y&R: Old Articles
I've been needing to catch up on a lot, work and school have kept me off various message boards lately. Just curious, but what were Ashley's early stories between 1982-1985? I know from my Y&R history readings she got involved with her step-brother Marc and went crazy and took an amnesiac road trip after learning that John wasn't her biological dad but it didn't seem she had much story until she got involved with Victor there '85/'86. A more recent history question I have but how was Raphael exactly related to Ashley? Wasn't he like Dina's long lost son or something? That courtroom brawl use to be on Youtube, not sure if it is anymore. I know this is, and note how sinister Katherine is in these clips as opposed to her sainthood nowadays: [youtubee]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_l6Mb3ElWI The Jill/Katherine feud was still warm in the early 90s although growing a bit stretched, Jill and Kay fighting over Rex after he married Jill after Marge as Katherine drove him away. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the Jill vs. John story that played out between 1994-1996 because the reasons for the divorce and custody battle over Billy seemed so explosive to me as kid then. However, after watching so many 80s clips I prefer the 80s story of John/Jill/Jack/Katherine because that was much more explosive and had higher stakes, not to mention all the stellar performances by Dickson, Lester, and Cooper. Speaking of Jill, I need to dig up the short article I have from early 1993 which complains about the Victor and Jill pairing(the author notes it as disgusting and critizes Walton's performance).

Thanks the stories Doc Reese and return of Pilar, and that boxing kid and his really annoying sister really turned me off from ATWT that fall so I was only watching on an occasional basis and didn't follow any synopses. I had just assumed this Julia was indeed Julia, she was certainly crazy too. I hated the Holden/Carly affair because besides the lack of chemistry Carly and Lily had been good friends especially when Carly helped Lily cover for Lily after Julia's murder. Another 00s musing I have is I wonder how Luke would have turned out if Kim Zimmer's son Jake Weary had stayed in the role. He was pretty good I thought and was an actual teen playing a teen. It seemed for a long time they were going to give Luke an alcoholism story before any gay story.

Did the character of Lily only work because of Martha Byrne's ability to sell her? I know Heather Rattray was playing Lily with my first memories as a kid of watching ATWT circa 1991 or so but I really liked Damian and Lily more than I did Holden and quickly liked Byrne a whole lot better. I always hoped that Lily would become more than just the rich girl/damsel in distress role because Byrne always brought a lot of warmth and could be a firecracker at times, see her fight with Connor in the 1995 New Years Eve vids on Youtube. Holden and Lily were rootable to me in the late 90s during the early Molly stuff and the Faith/Hope baby switch. This past decade though I was bored to tears by Holden and Lily especially during the Keith stuff and then Lily's pill addictions. I wanted Dusty and Lily to hookup in 2004 but it never happened. One more thing, the supposed return of Julia in 2004/05 was utterly preposterous(never made sense to me) and the actress did a horrific job. Though in Jack's amnesia (wasn't Park leaving the show?) and Holden's random affair and it was a disaster. Worse is when they Carmen Duncan come in to sub for Fulton as Lisa simply to tell Julia of how bad Carly was and list all of her past crimes. It made Lisa look bad.

Regarding Kim Zimmer on the show I remember in the late 90s or so SOD in one of those highlight sections did a thing about current stars talking about their canceled soap experience and I remember reading Zimmer saying she basically shed no tears over The Doctors ending. Anyone remember this?

I seem to recall the show did get some backlash at the time for being too depressing particularly because both Holden's amnesia and Ellie's abortion came on the heels of Margo's rape amongst other things. Not mention the neverending Carolyn Crawford murder mystery became an albatross for the show, who'd guess that is was the mousy Vicki Harper who ordered Carolyn to be murdered? ATWT was a great show really 1992-1995 I remember as a kid following both the Linc Lafferty and Neal murder mysteries and fleeing the room when Hans started sawing off Lily's wedding ring from her own finger Aside from the late 70s, late 90s, and of course late 00s ATWT usually had good and solid ratings. Whether we like it or not the Sheffer years did have ATWT as a top 5 show, I still remember back in 2003 when the show was consecutively in third or fourth place while GL was stuck at #8. Munker on Days? I thought she did okay as Kimberly, she came on with the whole multiple personality story still going there at the end of '92 and became engaged to the doctor guy. Unlike Howard, Chase never had scenes with Shaughnessy as he was long gone by this point. They had Kim get involved in the John/Marlena/Roman story when she discovered Marlena was doing paternity tests but decided to keep her knowledge of Marlena's a secret, something that didn't get played out further because Kim and the doctor were written out by fall of '93 by moving away and of course Pease came back in '94 for Tom Horton's funeral.

Please feel free to post more stuff Carl between new computers, accusations of hoarding, and feeling silly for having a bunch of "useless old" soap stuff I've pretty much discarded a lot of what I had from the 90s several years ago only to be kicking myself today for not keeping. Heh it was only in 2003 when I accidentally a taped an episode of Passions over a 1994 Y&R episode I quickly started to discover and preserve any old soap episodes I had in the numerous boxes of VHS tapes. Regarding Munker someone on the old WOST website and posted a circa 1980 article regarding her exit and it blamed her getting stuck between "two feuding actresses" if I recall right. I wonder how Munker/Chase was on ATWT, she had a lengthy daytime career and I've seen a 1976 AW ep and a 1987 GL with her it, and of course I pretty much watched her for her full run as the last Kimberly recast on Days, perhaps her most notable daytime role. As for Ellie Snyder, I don't believe the show ever brought her back, though probably not without reason. The abortion story Marland wrote may have read brilliant on paper, but after re-watching it was painful and way too dark to watch. Worse is I didn't remember that those scenes aired in the SAME episode that Daryl flew out the window and an amnesiac Holden went to the farm--and Lily for the first time since losing his memory. Talk about a downer of an episode! I think it was an indirect character assassination for Ellie I don't think Marland intended for either.

I remember it being a big deal when ATWT reunited the entire Snyder family for Thanksgiving 1994, and that was Caso's last year sadly. After that, ATWT returns for brief appearances became fewer and farther between. I remember when Lisa Brown came back as Iva for Rose's funeral in 2003 she barely had any lines. Good point about Schultz although she did come back in 1986 for the 30th Anniversary, was she married to Larry Bryggman still in '91? I've heard the feud between Schultz and CZP caused Ariane Munker a.k.a Ariana Chase to quit. How long was Jordan Baker in the role of Betsy in '94? I don't remember it really, other than Dani later becoming a pathological liar with Jeremy, Nikki, and Ryder. I always thought Betsy should have been around in the 90s as Emily's sister. Well I wonder these days now with ATWT off the air and her own career dead in the water I wonder how Ryan feels about it now. Same goes to Brian Bloom who royally dissed the show way back. My props to Julianne Moore to always being a ATWT supporter

It's fascinating all the little details that sometimes are forgotten off the Internet. What's even more interesting is to see Marland and Caso go out of their way to actually bring Betsy to the screen unlike so many soap funerals and weddings. I know this year's casting of John Martin as Bill Horton on Days for Alice's funeral was a rare example of this. I'm surprised they didn't try to get Jacqueline Schultz back as Dee for the funeral. One odd thing I've seen going through old clips is Andrew Kavovit's guest appearance at Christmas 1992 as Paul. He shared some awkward scenes with KMH's Emily it was almost unbelievable that his Paul and her Emily were ever lovers.

I've read before a funny anecdote out there from the either the late 80s/early 90s in which I believe Dagne Crane, the original Sally was approached by a woman who said "Glad to see you out of jail" in reference to the time when Sally was Ellen Stewart's cellmate, over 20 years since that story had air. To me the most shocking thing would have been November 2nd, 1981 when The World Turns On and On debuted. I know the other P&G soaps had updated their openings to fit with the times (SFT, Edge, and especially GL) but ATWT's was the most drastic. I wonder how many grannies fell out of their chairs that day. On the other hand even though for better or worse ATWT had a banner year in 1983, it didn't seem the show's demographics changed much did they?

It's been quite some time since I listened to Paul's Valerie theme on the old WOST site but if I remember right it was a sorta upbeat piano piece. After reading up on ATWT history I was always amazed that Sandy Wilson was on the show for so long with multiple actresses in the part. Aside from her forgotten marriage to Bob she really had no connections to the rest of the show and I wonder why they kept bringing the character back. They never mentioned her after 1979 did they?

Thanks, I know McConnell was a star on Santa Barbara but I had wondered about her Valerie, who even had her own theme music written by Charles Paul. It's interesting that Hunt and Ellis are credited to extending ATWT's reign at number one after being nearly toppled by Days and AW in the early 70s but they were the ones to also lose ATWT's number one status in 1977/78. It's also weird reading about pre-1981 Tom Hughes, a Tom without Margo. I've heard the castings of Deas and especially Greg Marx really de-aged Tom. I suppose that was a relief to Fulton. By the way, did ATWT do anything special for their first hour episode in 1975?

What's the story on Judith McConnell's Valerie? I've heard and understand she was popular and that Valerie was supposedly a so-called "wild, young fun" character but reading some old synopsis she sounds a tad tame compared to her contemporaries on Y&R, Days, GL etc. and only lasted a few years. Well other than crashing her plane into Kim's house, that must have been quite something to watch for the 70s!

This appeared in the 6/16/99 issue of Soap Opera News about Goutman's impending arrival. Though I don't necessarily agree with the writer's perceptions of ATWT at the time, I can somewhat relate as who had mixed feelings at the time--one being sorrow over AW's cancellation, the other being the rumored uproar of "AW taking over ATWT" with the crossovers of Jake and Vicky as well as (very briefly) Cass and Lila in addition to ATWT moving into AW's old studios, not to mention Goutman and Laiman going from AW to ATWT as well.

All those old SOD articles from the 90s make me sad. Thanks for posting those! One of my favorite forgotten ATWT stories from the '90s was the Janice Maxwell story. Deliciously psycho! Connie Wilson if I recall right was James Stenbeck's mistress who then ended up being murdered. Other than that fact I don't know. Was she related to Sandy Wilson? I really wish Betsy Stewart had been brought back in the 90s permanently.

I thought there was quite the viewer turnout with Kathy Roberts' death. I've heard they had to up Kathy's age a little bit once the actress started appearing on TV because she was supposed to quite younger on the radio. Sort of like the William Conrad situation. I would have liked to see the Internet's reaction to 1984 GL and 80s Reva...probably not a single fat joke then. I always wish Bert and Bill would have had a daughter. That wedding list is interesting. I know through old episodes I've seen Phillip and Blake's infamous wedding in 1989 and later seen Ric Hearst and Sherry Stingfield having mad sex but how exactly did Blake go from Phillip to A-M within months? I think Harley left A-M for Dylan, I remember seeing clips of Carl Tye Evans' A-M getting into a brawl with Dylan at a swimming pool.

ALL: They Almost Became
I love Eva LaRue but trying to picture her as Rosanna is kind of out there. I wonder how Allison Sweeney would have worked as Victoria on Y&R. A few that I know of I hadn't seen listed yet: --Ashley Bashioum auditioned for the role of Marina after Aubrey Dollar left, only to lose out to Kit Paquin(!) --Nicholas Coster and Quinn Reddeker were both tapped to play the role of Alistair Crane on Passions before David Bailey got it. --Linda Dano was in talks for a role(Gloria?) on Y&R but didn't get it. --Maree Chatham was considered for the role of Rachel on Passions before Sharon Wyatt got it.
