Verbal exchange is not quite the same as what I meant. It is entertaining but it is different from having an equal keeping you in check in the audience's mind. Trading verbal barbs is fun stuff but it is easy. Having an enemy who knows your number and is not afraid of you and can look at you in the eyes as an equal in the audience's esteem is quite another thing and is important for the show's balance.
Erica was Erica. She was quite an unsufferable person if you think about it. That's why Mona was so important in humanizing her and I think the rivalry with Brooke was helping in a similar way.

Which brings us to this. I agree. I only mentioned Brooke because Brooke way outlasted Barbara and we were talking about her disappearance in the last decade of AMC.
By that time, every woman who went up against Erica, verbally or more rarely otherwise, you always felt that if there was something at stake other than verbal sparring, Erica would wipe the floor with them.

Brooke was her equal in intellect and accomplishments. And fan affection, if not fame.

I am not the most objective person to ask because I never cared for Maria at all. But, obviously, no. Only reason to me she could even be mentioned in this conversation is because the one unforgivable thing Erica ever did was at Maria's expense so that gives her, in theory, moral superiority over Erica.
But in terms of intellect or charisma, Maria has nothing on Erica - or Brooke IMO. She was "likable" (not to me but broadly speaking) but that's not enough to go up against complex layered characters. Maria has things going for her (again not to me but broadly speaking) and she was strong - but I never got any depth from her.

All I will say is try to picture any other character mentioned here deliver the lecture Brooke gives Erica about Bianca in the video shared a few comments up and you can't think of any other "rival" that would have enough weight for Erica to listen.
Picture Krystal or Annie or Greenlee or Maria. You'd just roll your eyes. Erica would just have to reply who do you think you are with contempt and the audience would probably side with her, despite agreeing with what is being said.
Erica couldn't do that with Brooke, at least not from the audience's POV. She could say the words but the audience knew who Brooke was and Brooke had earned the right to lecture/advise her.

+100,000,000. You summarized perfectly what made the Erica and Brooke relationship so interesting to watch.

  2. It's likely the line-cutters were crew members and not cast members.  But which actors do you think would display such impudent behavior?

That "raging bitch" line is an absolute classic. Few in daytime, primetime or film could sling a one-liner with the precision Susan Lucci could.

Standing ovation for La Kane and La Lucci. Pine Valley needs to happen just so Erica can sling these one-liners again.

Tom was the epitome of a “mean drunk” -
and I concur with the person who said he appeared possessed when his rage came out.

The mediocre Deidre Hall should’ve taken notes to appear more convincing.

    But back to Tom....

He was also a devout Catholic, who balked at his wife taking contraceptives because she was career-oriented and didn’t want to be a mother at that time.

Did he even know about Erica’s early ‘70s abortion??!!
I think not, as he probably would’ve stoned Miss Kane to death if he knew!!

(Btw, I liked the Barbara character.
Yeah, she should’ve walked little Laura across the street, especially considering it was evening hours.... but she had a deadline on that goddamn report!!)

LOL, yes that was me who said Tom looked possessed. And Barbara, don't get me started. She deserved this Erica Kane slap and more.

Flashback to that time Tom hit Travis over the head with a barbell

    Um ok....

    1) What was Charlie wearing?

    2) Tom always scared the [!@#$%^&*] out of me when he got angry and his eyes got big, like he was possessed.

Let’s say she stayed long term in 95, who  would you pair her with? Maybe test her with Jack anything to get him away from Erica. imagine Nina and Tad having affair?Or even having her fall for her bestie(Brooke) Fiancé Edmund?!  I live for scandalous stories like that! Why not test her morals have her be the spoiler for once.

I think Nina coming back solo would not have worked. I think the viewers were so heavily invested in Cliff and Nina as a couple that to just have her return on her own with them having broken up off screen would be unsatisfying. The viewers would have been dissatisfied with her next story.  Had she come back with Cliff and broken up on screen and he left the canvas, then I think the audience would be more accepting.

It was cute, charming, and finally resolved the one plot thread from the original.

Am I the only one who wanted to not have this plot resolved? It was an unsolved mystery which I felt should have been left unsolved. Life is sometimes sh*tty like that, and we don't always get what we want.

    Spoiler

I did always wonder what Punky's mom looked like and the actress who would play her. Like I said previously, I loathe Sharon Lawrence, mainly because she's gotten way too many chances and is a mediocre actress, especially playing comedic roles.

On the other hand, I can see why the producers felt the need to address this plot point in the revival. It presumably has gotten people to tune in.

Cliff and Nina were absolutely played tf out by 1986-1987 for SURE. They're a great example of overdoing the make up/break up storylines for a supercouple and having no idea what to do with them as happily married.

I'd kill to see their beginnings to see how the magic began, because based solely on all I've seen from 1983-1989, I've never been crazy about them.

They became popular thanks to the great character of Palmer Cortlandt who was so against their pairing.

  8. Just finished watching the revival.

    Spoiler

Can't believe the show finally brought back Punky's mom. And she's played by Sharon Lawrence! I never liked Sharon Lawrence and I resent her even more for abandoning Punky!

Fingers crossed it’s good and gets picked up! I’m confident they’ll at least get a pilot out of it. If Star is any indication, he knows how to give you the type of twisty soap that would at least get you through the door. I’m just wondering with it being submitted now, would this even be in contention for next season? Or for Fall 2022.

Star? Are you talking about Darren? He's not part of this project.

Mona was so intriguing to me because despite her patrician exterior, she had a history on the cabaret circuit, her best friend was Nick Davis (who, if I remember correctly, Mona suspected might have been Erica's actual father), and she wound up married to one of the richest guys in Pine Valley without really trying.

I do not remember Nick as Erica's potential father. I thought it was clear that Mona and Nick had a platonic relationship.

I'm going through some of my uploads, and these are some beautiful scenes with Erica and Nick. She tells him about her father issues. Thank you, BlueRose8506 for originally uploading this.

Wow. Amazing scenes. Great performance by Susan Lucci. I wonder if this episode was on her Emmy reel? Anyway, those scenes highlight the abandonment complex that Erica suffered which is at the core of her character.

In 2018, Cady McClain was interviewed about her time on Y&R on the TV Guidance Counselor podcast and noted that cue cards were disallowed one year prior to her hiring (btw she went on to say that Y&R was the least professional set and she hated her time there).

Wow, so YR was still using cue cards around 2012-2013? That's still fairly recent. I know daytime work is tough, but these actors making above average wages should be required to memorize their lines.
