I still recall reading an interview with her during her ATWT run where she expounded on the joys of buying clothes, wearing them and then returning them for a refund. IIRC, too, readers wrote to the magazine afterward, saying how tacky and gross she was for doing such a thing.

When I lived in NYC, before my father's sudden death in '12, I saw Chris Goutman on two, separate occasions: once, at a Barnes & Noble on the Upper West Side (82nd & B'way, I think, not too far from where SEARCH FOR TOMORROW was taped for awhile); the other, on the no. 1 train at the 59th Street/Columbus Circle station. Both times, Goutman was reading. Both times, I was tempted -- very tempted -- to introduce myself. (If nothing else, I thought, he could pass along to his wife how fond I was of her on SEARCH.) Trouble was, though, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do so w/o telling him how I really felt about ATWT under his direction. He's a good director, IMO, but he's also an incredibly lousy EP.

"The View" needs a massive, massive overhaul. Whoopi, Sherri and Jenny all need to be replaced. ABC could even launch a new ad campaign around it -- "A WHOLE DIFFERENT VIEW," or some malarkey.

I freaking love that story, TimWil. But I'm also jealous, b/c one of my biggest regrets is that I'll never get the chance to meet my hero and thank him for his storytelling brilliance, much less have the opportunity to work for and be "tutored" by him.

That's one idea. But I wonder whether Marland was exploring the option of revealing that someone -- Dr. Michael Shea? -- had faked Chuckie's death when he was a child and then raised him under a different name away from Oakdale. Of course, if we do say Chuckie never died, then it just raises too many other questions that could never be answered satisfactorily.

Agree, lol. As it was, explaining how Lisa would have had a child no one knew about, cementing his status on the show as Tom Hughes' younger brother -- it all turned out to be for naught, since Marland's death wound up scuttling whatever plans the show might have had for Scott beyond his introduction. (Plus, even if Marland hadn't died, I doubt Joseph Breen would have stayed on the show given his HIV status, and that still might have put a crimp in the plans.) OTOH, at least Chuckie was someone long-time viewers would have remembered, just as they had remembered the baby Kim thought had died that turned out to be the very-much-alive Sabrina.

IIRC, someone BTS said that Douglas Marland briefly considered bringing Chuckie back from the dead before creating the character of Scott Eldridge instead. I guess he figured it'd be too hard to explain how Chuckie had been presumed dead for so long.

Exactly, Carl. According to an interview with Brown and Tylo, I think, Rauch's predecessor, Michael Laibson, had plans not only to reunite Quint and Nola but also bring back Mrs. Renfield for some big, action-adventure-heavy story that was supposed to be reminiscent of their "glory days" in the early '80's. However, because GUIDING LIGHT was in so much trouble in the ratings (I think it was during the Laibson/Megan McTavish era, in fact, when cancellation rumors first began to swirl), Rauch, in tandem with incoming HW's Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown, felt they needed to concentrate on stories and characters -- such as Annie/Reva/Josh and Matt/Vanessa -- that were surer bets (at least from their point of view) in bringing viewers back to the show. Hence, Quint and Nola's reconciliation, which had been in the works, was dropped; and Rauch simply let Tylo go. (IIRC, Tylo hadn't signed a contract, which made it easy for the writers simply to stop writing for him.)

"Supernatural" is a perfect example of the kind of occult-ish entertainment I steer clear from.

Oh, I stayed away from the "Harry Potter" series for reasons that had nothing to do with religion, lol. Years and years ago, when the first book was out and I wasn't involved with "the Church," I picked it up and was so bored that I didn't get past the second or third chapter. I think I might have seen the first movie, though. Don't wish to hijack the thread any more than I have, so I'll just say thanks for the heads-up and bow out gracefully.

Here's a question for all you GoT fans: Believe it or not, I am considering picking up this series from the beginning. As a rule, though, I tend to stay away from movies, books and TV series that deal with the occult (i.e., vampires, werewolves, witches, demonic and devilish beings and the like). Especially since I "found the Lort" and joined the Catholic church seven years ago, I try to be very careful about what I allow into my spirit. Does GoT dabble in that stuff at all? Is it akin to, say, the "Buffy"-verse (which I did watch, pre-born again)? Or is it more like a J.R.R. Tolkien or C.S. Lewis fantasy novel? One more thing: yes, it's true, I am a born again Christian. I realize that might be a shock to those who are familiar with my general behavior on these boards. What can I say? God's still working on me? *shrug

I've heard the same, robb. Supposedly, Mae was supposed to be Stacey (hence all the 1940's references, since Nola enjoyed watching old movies); however, plans were changed after Lisa Brown refused to return to the show.

See, this is why I believe networks are too eager sometimes to give "hot" shows multiple-year renewals. Just because "Glee" was in better shape (both in the ratings and in the overall quality) two years ago, that was no guarantee that things were going to stay that way.

Agree. Claire Labine was successful at GH, IMO, because she had the full support of ABC and her producer, Wendy Riche. Same goes for the early years of RYAN'S HOPE, when she and her collaborator, Paul Avila Mayer, owned the show and then-VP of daytime, Michael Brockman, offered only minimal guidance.

I think Claire Labine had plans to bring back Trudy (as a homeless woman?) but MADD rejected her long-term story projections, resulting in that brief period when Labine and her kids quit before MADD, unable to find a replacement, asked her back.
