She wasn't the only one. In retrospect, Erin Torpey was darling as Jessica, but she was maybe TOO darling to play Jessica as a grown, mature woman involved in adult romantic relationships. So, in my mind, the change-over from her to Bree (or another, more mature-looking actress) probably needed to happen and would have happened, too, sooner or later. It was just unfortunate that the change occurred at a time when the show didn't have the right kind of people in charge to handle that character carefully.

I don't think it was a question of more money (although, maybe it was, deep down). Jaime Lyn Bauer said she was simply too exhausted to transition to an hour with the show; and once she bolted, Bill Bell decided to write out both families rather than recast yet another core character.

Y&R: Old Articles
I just want to know why Kay Alden and Jack Smith believed it would be a good idea to mess with history and make the two mother and daughter. What purpose did it serve (beyond goosing ratings)? Even if the idea of Katherine having an illegitimate daughter sounded juicy, there were ways to include Jill in the story without making HER the long-lost child. For example: Jill could have learned the truth and kept quiet until she figured out how to gain from the secret, along with the child's identity and/or whereabouts, being leaked. She could have hired someone to pretend to be the daughter -- or, better yet, because that idea might have been too similar to how she introduced Rex Sterling to Kay, she could have PRETENDED to be Kay's long-lost daughter because she knows or is led to believe Kay will leave the Chancellor mansion to her daughter in her will (a plot which would have fallen apart, of course, the minute Liz Foster heard about it and returned to set everyone straight). I'm not a writer, so I don't know whether those ideas would have been any better than what we got. Surely, though, someone on that writing staff could have found a proper way to write the story without committing such a serious blunder.

Knots Landing
According to an interview with, I think, Knots Landing Online, Pleshette's wife (and David Jacobs' ex-wife) had represented the Lechowicks as their agent until Lynn and Bernie suddenly decided to sever ties and go with another literary agency, claiming they wanted a better deal. Pleshette wrote for KL for awhile on a freelance basis after his departure, but he just couldn't (or wouldn't) agree with their way of telling stories.

I feel like that was a common problem among many established characters during JER's time at DAYS. Mark Valley's and especially Steve Wilder's Jack bore no resemblance to Matthew Ashford's. Stephanie Cameron's Jennifer bore no resemblance to Melissa Reeves's. Roark Critchlow? No way was his Mike anything like Michael T. Weiss's. Even John, Marlena and Roman were not what they used to be. I guess that's one reason why I eventually walked away from the show for awhile.

What Are You Listening To?
This one's probably been posted already, but, no matter. This is also the song that, IMO, Taylor Swift's new song, "Shake It Off," wants to be: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgjkth6BRRY

What Are You Listening To?
The music, of course, is flawless. Listening to it sends all sorts of pleasant feelings up and down the old spine. The lyrics, on the other hand.... Okay, look: I'm not going to suggest the lyrics suck, because they don't. For the most part, the words are equal to the melody in brilliance. But the part about how "it's a sad, sad story" and so forth -- I can't explain why, but even though I know they're essentially describing what led Natalie Maines to write the song in the first place, they just feel ever so slightly "off" to me. As if they aren't as poetic or as carefully crafted as the rest. But...that's me. I'm sure plenty will disagree.

What year was "Toy Soldiers" released? 1991? Oh, Christ, does that song take me back. I think I was in the sixth grade then, just about ready to start middle school.

Now, see, when you wear something as hideous as that, you are, in a sense, daring people not to talk [!@#$%^&*] about you.
