I wasn’t an Alice fan. I was more excited and impressed that JER had the cajones to kill her off. Frances Reid could have continued to appear as a ghost from time to time. As a Marlena fan, I was delighted that the star of the show was the serial killer. JER always gave his biggest stories to Deidre. And to keep it on topic, it was JER during the Salem Stalker story who brought back Marlena’s lookalike Hattie, albeit played by Deidre rather than Andrea Hall. I know it’s been 20 years now but Deidre sucks at playing Hattie. Abe, Maggie, Caroline, Cassie, Roman, Tony, Doug, and Alice were not essential. They were basically overpaid dayplayers by 2003. The essential characters were Marlena, John, Bo, Hope, Sami, Lucas, Shawn, Belle, Brady, Nicole, Jack, and Jennifer. Jack and Victor were the only deaths I objected to. I get it. You hate JER and still like to bash him even though he’s dead. Well he’s my favourite soap opera writer of all time. Passions is my favourite soap. This board is notoriously full of JER haters who constantly try to diminish his success and accomplishments. It’s very sad that they still do this but it is what it is. P.S. Days was as good as cancelled in 2003 until they brought JER back to save the show. His rehiring was the last time Days had a five-year renewal.

Well, Melaswen was a rewrite forced upon James Reilly by Ken Corday. That’s why it didn’t make much sense. I was a longtime viewer and I wanted all those characters to stay dead. JER specifically chose characters that viewers were very familiar with but who were no longer essential to the show, which was a brilliant move and way better than other soap serial killer stories where there’s one “major” victim and the rest mostly day players.

It doesn’t matter how long an actor played a role. What matters is their impact. Sarah Brown made a significant impact on GH and its viewers whereas LW simply hasn’t and never will. She’s just a recast with a job for life.

No. If they had had another sci-fi/supernatural story I probably would stuck around. Instead I got more into Sunset Beach.

There was no sense in having him on Days in the first place without Charlotte Ross.

Don’t speak for everyone. The clone story was the only time I tuned into The Guiding Light.

The 2008 Marge story got me back into Y&R. I stuck with the show until Griffith and Phelps took over.

Not only that but they didn’t even bother to explain how he survived his 2007 onscreen hospital bed death. I’m not always big on back from the dead stories but when I am I want them to go into detail about how they survived.

You’d think it would come up more with fans considering it was a graphic mass shooting. In Canada the episode aired with a parental advisory warning at the top of the episode. Andre was originally the son of Stefano’s brother and his wife. In 2015 he was retconned into being his son and that was never explained. That was courtesy of Griffith/Higley.

Deidre and Suzanne’s feud involves Deidre’s ex-husband. Thank you. Perhaps she was supporting because the spinoff was in development. The Pit really kicked Marlena’s return into high gear and set off her classic 90s run.

Marlena was meant to fill the void left by Susan Flannery (and she succeeded). Jada was brought on to fill Lani’s void. Carly stood in for Hope.

And Steffy’s aunt. I hope bringing on Diana is the first step in retconning Daisy, Ryder, Sarah, and Pheila. They really should bring on Deacon Jr or Eric or whatever he’s called. He should be in a triangle with Diana. Or maybe he’d hate her because of what Sheila did to Amber.

Langan’s Coronation Massacre is still, in my opinion, the most violent scene in daytime history and no one talks about it anymore. I think they could have used Andrea as Hattie in 2004. I liked the Salem PD’s theory that Marlena could have been mistaken for someone who looked similar to her but not identical. I don’t enjoy Deidre’s Hattie at all.

What exactly was Marlena up to in 1992? It seems like I never hear anything about a Marlena story from between her initial return and Stella/The Pit. Was she simply a casualty of Days going through multiple headwriting teams that year? Also, is Deidre’s rivalry with Crystal Chappell a true fact?

I’d still have Hattie turn out to be Sam. She should have been brought back from the dead ages ago. Of course, it only works with Andrea in the role. Hattie being a clone wouldn’t really work because Stefano was mystified by Hattie and her resemblance to Marlena. Plus, Andrea originally wore padding and prosthetics as Hattie until her first surgery by Dr. Rolf.

It made sense to use one here IMHO I don’t think they wanted Andrea to play a sci fi character. I have always wondered if Hattie would’ve turned out to be Sam had Andrea remained in the role.
