Days: August 2023 Discussion Thread
Admittedly, I haven't watched regularly since the bizarre Melaswen storyline, but I decided to check the last few episodes out because of the Victor stuff. Oof. Bad writing. Like, shockingly bad. And most of the actors just seem to be going through the motions.

Soaps That Were Good at Comedy?
Days had some comedic elements back around 1984-85, with Eugene, Calliope, Alex Marshall, Anna DiMera, and Howie Hofstedder.

Friendships That Helped Redeem or Add Layers to a Character
DOOL's Alex Marshall was morally unscrupulous, but his relationship with Marie Horton and their daughter Jessica Blake definitely highlighted his soft side.

Y&R/Days: RIP Quinn Redeker
A gifted writer and actor, for sure. Alex Marshall is one of the most memorable characters in DOOL history, mainly due to Quinn's portrayal of him as the morally questionable con man with a sarcastic wit that rarely missed. RIP

Which Long Absent Soap Character You would like To Return?
I wouldn't mind a reunion of Alex Marshall, Marie Horton and Jessica Fallon on Days. That whole storyline was fascinating. Maybe even let Alex interact with his old frenemy Anna "Saddle Shoes" DiMera.

Soap character stories that mirror the actor’s real life
DOOL's Alex Marshall writing a screenplay after the whole Stefano/slasher/concert chaos, in 1984. Quinn Redeker, the actor who played Alex, was actually an Oscar nominated screenwriter for co-writing The Deer Hunter.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
All of my classic DOOL knowledge comes from either YouTube or boards like these, but from what I can remember, Kellam Chandler's mansion was purchased by Stefano and Tony, when they came to Salem. Liz lived there with them since she was married to Tony at the time. When Stefano "died" in jail, Renee inherited the place. When Renee was murdered, Alex somehow inherited the house, even though he and Renee weren't married. (maybe there was a pre-nup? lol) When Stefano came back in 1984 he was the mastermind of a plot, which included blowing up the Salem Concert Hall during a hospital benefit. The bomb was defused by Eugene Bradford, and Stefano and his henchman Petrov tried to escape. Unbeknownst to them, a drunk Alex had stumbled into the back seat of their car, and caused them to plunge over a bridge into the river. Alex was saved by Abe and the Salem cops, but it was revealed that the Dimera mansion still technically belonged to Stefano since he never died. Alex was basically broke because Stefano had drained him of his inherited millions, so he sold the house to Neil Curtis and Liz Chandler. So it sort of came full circle with Liz owning her father's old place.

Days of Our Lives: March 2022 Discussion Thread
If this means a guest starring role for Quinn Redeker as Alex Marshall, it'll make this absurd storyline worth it. Lol.

ALL: Characters you are surprised lasted so long
Alex was great from around late 83 to 85 or so, especially when he was written almost totally as a bumbling, comical con man. By the time he unceremoniously left in 87, they'd written all of the charm out the character. For my money, Quinn Redeker was one of the best actors on the show during his seven year run.

ALL: Characters you are surprised lasted so long
I don't know that the Horton connection was dropped, necessarily, but once Jessica and then Marie left the show, Alex's ties to the family became less apparent.

Actors who looked like members of their soap families (and those that didn't)
Going way back, I think there was enough of a resemblance between Quinn Redeker (Alex Marshall) and Jean Bruce Scott (Jessica ) to make them a convincing father and daughter on Days.

GH: RIP Stuart Damon :(
Loved the dynamic between Alan and Edward. RIP to one of the greats.

AW: It's being reported Philece Sampler died 🙏
Renee was a badass. I love how she evolved from this vulnerable, somewhat naive southern girl to the Renee we saw in her final few scenes.

Thanks for the welcome! And yea, later on they added that twist about Renee noticing it wasn't Tony. But I was just wondering when the whole storyline began, if that was the plan or did the writers have someone else in mind as the murderer? I guess we'll never know, unless one of the writers at the time was asked about it.

Newbie here, and really loving digging into these deep dives on past episodes. I just recently watched the whole Salem Slasher/Phoenix storyline from 1983-84, starting with Renee's murder at the engagement party, and ending with the concert and Stefano "dying" again. I have a few questions about this particular storyline.... Why would Andre kill Renee on Stefano's orders, in the first place? Stefano, for all his evil deeds, loved his daughter, so that makes zero sense. I have a theory that the killer wasn't supposed to be Tony when the storyline first began, but they couldn't come up with a better idea so they went with it. The whole twin Andre thing seemed like an afterthought, maybe brought on by fan backlash against a character like Tony, who had pretty much been redeemed, being a killer. I wonder who else they may have had in mind as Renee's murderer, if anyone? The only choices that made sense would have been Alex or David. But once it was revealed that the person who killed Renee was also the same person killing, or attempting to kill, people while disguised as Roman, those ideas kinda went out the window since the character of David was off the show by then, and Alex really wasn't the serial killer wearing a mask disguised as somebody else type. lol.
