  1. I completely understand your point of view. I haven't been reading the actual BTG thread yet because the show hasn't started and I'm sure many people feel similar. But, for me...I'm lower middle class and have trouble paying rent. I don't want to watch other people do the same. 😆 I want to see rich people in designer clothes slapping each other over being betrayed! I can't remember who posted it on this forum...it was years ago...but their description of what they want from a soap explained to me what I loved about the genre: "OTT villains and women who wear hats to the office." I've been watching B&B from the beginning on its official YouTube channel and they dropped the lower middle class people pretty quickly. Within 18 months, the mother, the father, the grandmother, and Katie and Storm Logan disappeared along with Rocco and Brooke's original boyfriend. Like Dynasty before it, the show realized people wanted to see the rich people in the mansion in gorgeous clothes. I joked to my husband, "It's like they finally realized the show was called 'The Bold and the Beautiful,' not 'The Hesitant and the Homely.'" 😜
  2. It might be because I watched and enjoyed Dallas so much that I'm enjoying Season 7 of Knots since this is the year the two swapped producers/writers. I'd loved Seasons 4 and 5 of Knots but Season 6 just hit storylines I don't enjoy, I guess. Funny enough (because they're both cul-de-sac shows,) I did the same thing with Desperate Housewives when I binged it. I disliked Season 6 so much that I stopped about 10 episodes in and skipped to the end. Had I not known that Vanessa Williams came on in Season 7, I probably would've stopped watching it altogether. (Glad I didn't though cuz VW was a shot in the arm for that show!)
  3. I had to skip Season 6 about 10 episodes in and just jump to the last two. I couldn't stand how long the Val-knows-her-twins-are-alive-but-doesn't-know-where-they-are-so-now-has-split-personalities storyline. Am now in Season 7 - much more interesting with the Empire Valley intrigue. AND Hunt Block is in it. 😍
  4. This discussion probably best belongs in the Beyond the Gates thread but, since it's happening here...an article from Entertainment Weekly. The most relevant quote from it as to what to expect: “We wanted to have a show on the air that spoke to a different side of the Black experience,” Val Jean tells Entertainment Weekly over a joint Zoom with Ducksworth. “Not the downtrodden, not the ghettoized. We wanted to show rich, Black people doing messy things.” “I've long been fascinated with showing the side that we haven't seen a lot of,” says Ducksworth. “In these Maryland suburbs, there were some of the most affluent African American counties in all of America. So looking at that and the wealth of everything at Howard University, I felt that this was an area that was ripe for the picking. You get the upstairs, the downstairs of it all. It's true to life." Personally, my best friend has family who lives in one of those suburban Maryland Black gated communities which I've visited many times. And it's something no soap has ever shown before. Sounds quite interesting to me! https://ew.com/beyond-the-gates-first-black-daytime-soap-preview-exclusive-8752814
  5. @Maxim You're definitely getting to the good stuff. 1989 is a particularly good year. And, imo, 1990 and 1991 followed up virtually just as strongly. Have fun!
  6. I'm also a first-time Season 6 viewer. Didn't know the soaps are now on Prime - will definitely check that out for the no commercial versions. I'm 10 episodes in and Season 6 is...interesting. I hated the Richard Wainwright story in Season 5 and assumed he'd be killed in the earthquake. I did not enjoy having to sit through another 6-7 episodes of him and his disturbing relationship with Vicky. Kim Novak isn't the best actress, is she? I'm starting to at least enjoy her character though as the episodes progress. The show feels like almost a different show now with Cole gone, the Stravros men and Brett Cullen, not to forget Dana Sparks as a recast Vicky. The only thing I can say about her is that both the character and actress are as annoying as the first version in Seasons 1-2 so at least there's consistency. 😆 Am missing Simon McCorkindale and Morgan Fairchild and, surprisingly, Emma's trucker boyfriend. At least Emma was happy for once!
  7. I agree. MC was HOT!!! And I thought one of the best actors on the show. I loved his Mike. I loved him with Katie. (But I'm the rando who loved Katie so I enjoyed all of her pairings except Chris at the end.) MC was one of the few male actors on soaps who seemed to be able cry on cue. I thought it gave Mike a sensitivity that was refreshing from cold-as-ice Snyder studs. (Though I of course LOVED them as well. They were just different.)
  8. It was probably smart to keep Tom in his 30s for decades after the SORASing. He finally got back to his actual age! 😆
  9. Yeah - Denise looks great. And in the beginning of her storyline when she would dance - like really dance, not stripper dance - she was so graceful. I wish they'd been able to incorporate that more. I'm hoping both of them end up on The Gates. And maybe they are. I haven't been paying too much attention to it. Am just excited for it to premiere next year. The McColls never really worked for me. I don't know why. Maybe if I could see more of their tenure I'd feel differently. Diana grated on me (I think I feel about her the way everyone else feels about Katie.) And after first seeing Mark Pinter as "evil Grant" on AW, I think I just have a personal problem watching him be the good guy.
  10. I agree with your take on Earl. Although I loved seeing Farley Granger on the show he was so obviously Gay Gay McSuper Gay...your storyline would've been more interesting. And I can totally see Lisa falling in love for a gay man once she was older and more vulnerable. And Ben is hot period! 😆 I don't think he ever had success with a woman though. His religion really got in his way. I disagree with you but only from something I saw 24 years ago. Now that I'm at his period during my rewatch of the show, (and first time watching the 80s and 90s,) I can't wait to see how I feel about his tenure. So far, what's happening on the show is far better than what Leah Laiman had been spouting out for a year! In fact, he's taking the mess of the show he inherited from her and is turning all of the stories and characters around. And the actors are loving it - finally back to giving the fantastic performances I haven't seen many of them give since around '97.
  11. Continuing to rewatch the series, I don't think Scheffer is the problem. This episode has GREAT scenes between Kim, Bob, John, Andy, and Nancy. History of the show is used throughout, in particular with a Kim/Nancy scene somewhere between minutes 14-17. I get some people will never like Hunt Block as Craig because he isn't Scott Bryce; however, Hunt's Craig, as written, is a direct descendent of Bryce's. It's not in this episode but in other one's I've watched this week and last, Craig's deteriorating relationship with Sierra, when Bryce was brought back in the 90's, has been mentioned. Especially in regards to Emily's interference in the Craig/Sierra relationship and the Craig/Samantha relationship. For Hughes' family lovers, who want to write off Scheffer's "non-use" of history, this is a must-see.
  12. It's best to remember that all award shows - Oscars, Tonys, Emmys - Daytime and nightime - Grammys, Golden Globes, etc. have very little to do with talent and A LOT to do with politics, popularity, and making up for previous slights.
  13. As I continue my journey, this was another particularly interesting episode. The writers are peppering in Julia's descent into madness (which some might say began when she shot 6 bullets into a dead corpse; however, watching her whole storyline, she was always a little "off the beam," and her therapy sessions with David didn't help.) Leah Lamian's explanation for why Carly left Jack at the altar came across to me as, "Well, we'll write off the pregnant actress and it explain it when she comes back in 5 months." However, at least Scheffer tries to give it an actual explanation in this episode. It's nice seeing scenes with such a strong black cast. Isaac, Ben, and Denise really work well together. Speaking of which, so do Dolan, Block, and Conn. They really behave like a family. I laughed out loud at the looks passing between Lisa and Barbara as Julie described her plan to trap Jack with a pregnancy. We all know they've both been there, done that!
  14. Agreed. Martha always worked with what she got. If the material was lousy...she couldn't always lift it the way other actors could. I was glad to see that Corley and Demorest were still onboard with the HW change. I remember really liking his writing tenure until I didn't. It may be this change that turned me as well. I'll be interested to see... Agreed on this Chris Hughes - he was the best of the "bland actors" who were cast over the years. He really did have great chemistry with Wagner. Hays and Hastings as well.
  15. HA! I just watched Dynasty's Season 4 premiere earlier today. "Love" the promo. Linda Evans and Joan Collins both have that "uncanny valley" feeling to them. Maybe it's just the heads floating in fire.
  16. This evening's episode. Sheffer's second month and the show is already much more enjoyable than it was under Laiman. There's a lovely storyilne for Nancy but I don't remember if there's follow-through or not. I'll enjoy discovering it for a second time though. Each day this week, one of our leading ladies has received an invitation to David Stenbeck's funeral (tomorrow night's viewing) and THAT I'll never forget. Martha's Lily could drive me crazy sometimes but I think Sheffer was one of the few scribes who knew how to write her as an actual human being.
  17. Thanks so much for posting this! It's always great to see a new clip from the show. It's interesting...even though I'm one of those believers that anything else major will never surface from what exists on YouTube already, I have a recurring dream where there's a soap opera channel that shows all the vintage soaps. It's essentially an anxiety dream because I realize that the show airs at 1pm and 4pm and it's nighttime and, once again, I had forgotten to watch it both times! Even though it's just the one scene, it's nice to see more of Carol and of course, always nice to see vintage Kathryn Hays.
  18. I love and agree with every word of this post! 🤣
  19. Hey, we all like what we like. I'm a Katie fan and Lord knows I'm basically the only one on here. LOL I'll agree that for many Tremors is a cult classic. I know so many people who love it. It was just never a favorite of mine. My cult classic is Clue: The Movie but that's another one that is controversial. Either you love it or you hate it! Your comment about Sierra and Lily is hilarious. Although I eventually grew to love Lily (in that way like I have friends I love but who can really get on my nerves sometimes) but teenage Lily was somewhat a little too much.
  20. She wasn't the greatest actress in the world. She's most know for the movie Tremors - a fairly bad horror film from the early 90s. According to her IMDB page and wikipedia she had a few one episode roles on primetime 80s and 90s shows. Her last acting role was in 2005. If you google her, the most recent thing that comes up is her arrest in 2019 for possession of a stolen vehicle as well as 14 credit cards without the permission of the credit card holders. Both of which are felonies. I can't discover if she was ever prosecuted and went to jail or not.
  21. Agreed. Sable and Monica would've been even more front and center which I would've loved. And the lady in the limo...with it being David Paulsen, you know it just had to be something big - whatever he had to do. I wonder if he would've written the 10th season had it happened. I loved how he went back into the past and made the 9th season a murder mystery about Alexis' lover from before Blake banished her from Denver.
  22. Yeah, I agree. There was no writing on the wall to be seen. Dynasty was still doing well for its time slot for ABC. The show had been given a HUGE creative push by Jacobs. The show was still doing well in Europe, especially with Stephanie Beacham rejoining the show (or finally joining the original show.) ABC's decision to not renew the series was last minute and completely unexpected.
  23. Agreed. Another great Nancy storyline. And again, imo, showing that she was essentially Grandmother to all of Oakdale!
  24. Agreed. That story gave Wagner a chance to show what she could do! Something she wouldn't really get the chance to do again.
  25. Considering Chris died not many years after that and Dan was off the show by the late-mid-90s, (and I agree that episode is one of the best and so touching considering the actor was losing his faculties,) Nancy would've only been in her 70s. (I've always assumed, but maybe other people know better, that Chris and Nancy were like standard couples of the 40s and 50s...married when Nancy was probably only 18 or 19 because she would've been expected to go directly from her father's house to a husband's house and start popping out babies.) I totally get your point but I don't see it as you're only worthwhile as part of a couple. I don't know how old you are but, as you get older, it's not about finding love or being part of a couple, it's about having someone around as a safety net/partner. No one wants to be alone in their 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond. It doesn't mean everyone will find a suitable late-life partner but, unless you're rich, it's comforting to have the support.
