Yes, originally there was an apartment above the garage. Duke and Andy lived there for a time. And then I think Andy by himself? I remember watching the Nancy being attacked scene about 2 years ago. In my head, I thought it was still the same apartment above the garage but I probably just made it that because I knew that's what it was supposed to be. LOL Nancy getting married again was a touching storyline. When you lose your love still so early in your life - Nancy was in her 60s yes? - you long to find someone else with whom you can live out the rest of your days. Unfortunately for Nancy, that wasn't meant to be either. She soldiered on though and found a purpose in life by giving advice to the young ones. She sort of became the grandmother of the entire town which I thought was fitting for her character.

Well, turning into a sarcastic prick can happen to the best of us. LOL So far, in my rewatch (am at Sept '00,) I know that Craig was pretty nasty in the early 80s before he was redeemed and became everyone's best friend. I can buy him becoming bitter after Sierra separated from him in the early-mid 90s, and he did what he could to save things but she was too busy running Montega. So he set out into the world to make his own way again instead of being Sierra's lapdog. And I've known many people to change A LOT in 6 years. Right now, his Craig is pretty tame. He's mostly concerned with repairing his relationship with Bryant and he's finding himself drawn to Carly. Because who wouldn't? Maura West could have chemistry with a paper bag. I'm interested to see how I feel as I rewatch something I haven't seen in 24 years! And if I'll enjoy it as much as I did before. So far, I'm just waiting for Lily and Simon to get off that stupid island... Oh, and as for Guiding Light, I've only seen bits and pieces of his character. It's on my "list" of things to get to eventually.

@AMCOLTLLover This is a good episode from August I just finished watching that helps set up Craig/Carly. For everyone else, I can't understand the dislike for Hunt Block's Craig and never will. Not liking an actor, I can understand - everyone has different tastes. (If I never had to see the original Sierra from the 80s try to act again, it would be too soon.) But as for the character of Craig...when he returned in 1993, he and Sierra were already separated and then he left again in 1994. So now it's 6 years later, and in this episode he explains to Margo just what happened during those 6 years. How they grew apart (how many marriages have I seen that happen to throughout my life? Thankfully, not my own.) How he got tired of living in her shadow. It's a completely believable tale and how the character got from 1994 Craig to 2000 Craig. I actually watched the credits (which I rarely do now that they're to the side of a commercial) and Hogan Sheffer is already writing. Like Doug Marland before him, he really takes his time to explain reasoning for characters. Am so looking forward to the next 4 years!

As an '00 lover, I'd say start with October 2000. Personally. But, if you're interested in summer of 2001 you can't go wrong. It's just that, if you start in October 2000, you'll see the buildup that leads to the summer of 2001 and, imo, it's worth it. Also, more of that time period exists than the 90s. It can be frustrating to try and piece it together. Whichever you choose, enjoy!

Reading through the posts from the last couple of days (I haven't watched the newly posted clips/episodes yet but I always find I don't enjoy random episodes. I need to see things in context of the bigger picture to truly appreciate it.) one of the things I've seen on this board many times is the love for Bianca. Since 2017, watching everything that exists from '86 to '00 (where I am now) I personally don't get it. That character seemed so out of place and just didn't work as part of the canvas of ATWT. I remember she'd be gone for long stretches of time and then she'd show up and I'd think, "Oh man, I thought that character was surely gone by now." I can 100% understand why no writer ever brought her back. She was useless. She had no storyline. She was just someone Lucinda could talk to. I guess I feel about her the way everyone else seems to feel about Katie. LOL

Having just made it through the 90s, the Bob/Kim house was in desperate need of a new set - it looked extremely 1980s. I can see why the writers/producers at the time would cut back to just a kitchen. The only Hughes' were Bob/Kim/Nancy/Dan. Tom had his own house with Margo - which was still a large set. I remember several holidays spent there. Chris was in that awkward stage where we never saw him and he was never mentioned. (He got SORAS'd a couple of years later.) Andy had left the show. Frannie and Sabrina hadn't been seen for years. If budget cuts were already becoming a problem, the Hughes set makes sense to let go. Especially if they wanted to go all in on WOAK. That new set allowed it to be an actual network rather than just the set of Kim's talk show. Well, to be fair, their budget was slashed beyond recognition. Like Guiding Light, they were doing what they could with what they had while a parent company was essentially trying to force them out of business.

Tonight, in my continued journey through ATWT, I got to this episode from 2000. So much great material here. Bryant was driving a car and got into a wreck with Jennifer in the car holding Parker on her lap. None of this should've happen because Hal forbade Jennifer to see Bryant again. However, Barbara, moved by her daughter's plea, left them alone for 15 minutes in her kitchen. This episode shows Parker hanging on for dear life. Hal striking out at pretty much everyone - Barbara, Jennifer, and then, once he finds out Bryant is awake...well, Liz Hubbard does some excellent work both consoling her grandson as well as knowing to go gently in protecting him against Hal. She hits all the emotional beats perfectly, imo. Holden is finally starting to realize something is up with "Lily" just as Rose thinks she's gotten away with everything and is going to have the life of her dreams. (Well deserved, she thinks she thinks Lily ran off with Simon and her diamond.) The new we-haven't-seen-him-for-six-years Craig played by the incredible and incredibly sexy Hunt Block continues to threaten Winston while Carly begs him to help her get back to Oakdale. And Lisa continues to advise Julia that someone has to tell Carly her son has been in an accident. As I've always said, I'm not the biggest fan of Leah Laiman but with no island scenes or Andy pretending to be paralyzed, this was one of the best episodes in weeks.

And for those saying no one is saying or wondering why they're not being shown, Reverend Rutledge just proved my point. Wondering why they wouldn't keep them and insisting they could make money off of them. Why would they keep them? Because companies kept everything for years. Why would they finally destroy them? Because the P&G soap opera division has ceased to exist for over a decade. It cost them to keep them in storage so, as I heard first hand from someone who worked at P&G, rather than spend the money on them, they just got rid of everything. That makes perfect corporate how-do-we-save-money sense. But I'm probably wrong. And somewhere in some giant warehouse in NYC are hundreds of thousands of tapes of As The World Turns, Guiding Light, Another World, Texas, The Edge of Night and Search for Tomorrow. But...oh my gosh, they're creating a new all-black cast soap opera. That MUST mean they actually care about their 40 year old entertainment that they, oops, destroyed so long ago. Message boards always remind me of how much people will bend the truth or make up things in order to either not deal with something too painful or keep their hope alive, or...I don't know, just have something to rant about? I'll never get it.

The P&G situation is an interesting one. I was at a dinner party here in NYC and a gentleman who worked for P&G is a mutual friend and was also in attendance. I, of course, had many questions for him and he told me all the soap opera material was gone. His exact words, burned into my brain, were "P&G isn't paying for a warehouse to store the tapes of all of those old soaps." Going on to paraphrase him, he said the soap division has been disbanded for about 15 years, everything got destroyed, they had zero interest in preserving anything associated with the "old soaps" as he put it. Y'all can believe what you want but as year after year, decade after decade continues to go by and you're all still writing posts like, "I don't understand why P&G doesn't do anything with all of their soap opera material," maybe one day, it'll sink in. I hope so. I'd hate to thank so many people will be discussing this and holding onto hope for decades. Let it go. What's on YouTube or what actors from the show might add to YouTube from their personal collections is what is left.

As a first time 90s viewer, I too was enjoying Broderick and Behr. I steeled myself for Laiman taking over but found I enjoyed her first 5-6 months...probably because she was using story projections left behind. Sometime around Feb '00, I recognized a change. Still, the next 2 months will be over before I know it. (I hope! Missing episodes and a 2 week trip to France should help. Fingers crossed.) Edited to add: Last night, I was wondering if the Lily/Simon island storyline was network dictated. I'm reminded constantly by the commercials that this summer was the premiere/first season of Survivor on CBS. They even made a "Survivor" reference last night; I can't recall the specifics. And as far ahead as they film, Survivor wouldn't have been a "thing" by the time they were getting scripts for the summer ready and shooting them. Hmmmmmmm......

Yeah, I think soap viewers watch for many reasons. Some for plot. Some for character. Some for acting. I'm also on the acting side. I can give my willing suspension of disbelief for some of the writing if the actors give incredible performance and are able to sell it. That's what excites me about watching soaps. Especially knowing they basically have one rehearsal and then one shot at the actual recording.

Am currently in the (to me) dreaded summer of 2000 where Lily and Simon are stuck on that island and Andy, acting completely out of character, becomes his father and fakes being paralyzed so that Denise, someone he never loved, won't leave him. Leah Laiman is my least favorite head writer of any soap. At least all I have to get through is the next 2 months and Hogan Sheffer will come on and turn everything around, imo. In the meantime, at least Carly is back and Hunt Block has premiered as Craig. I can understand long term viewers being upset in the change in Craig's character. But I remember Craig being a manipulative man in the early 80s. And since he hasn't been seen on screen in 6 years now, it's not impossible for him to have changed. I certainly change in many ways over 6-8 years, as do many people I know. It's just a fact of life. Plus, Todd Rotondi and Hunt Block look so much like father and son, it's perfect casting!

@All My Shadows @vetsoapfan I have to respectfully agree to disagree with both of you and Irna Phillips. I've never considered here the be all end all opinion on soap operas, legendary as she, indeed, is. Edited to add @vetsoapfan that I agree in that anyone who says The Mary Tyler Moore show is "boring and unfunny" is immediately not to be trusted. LOL

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
This is one of those posts that just amazes me because, like any type of art, whether it be music, paintings, statues, television, movies...two people can watch something and have completely different viewpoints. I agree with you that Sheffer did a number on the show - a number one! He took a dying, poorly written mess that Leah Laiman had done to the show, especially summer of '00, and in one week, turned the ship around to something much more enjoyable to watch. Could he write multi-dimensional characters? Maybe not. However, a soap opera is melodrama and, having a masters degree in acting from one of the top schools in NYC, I know that melodrama was how America took theater and made it its own. In melodrama, good characters are good, and bad characters are bad. He wrote for what the genre is. Personally, that gave me characters I really wanted to root for and characters I really despised. He could not do subtlety? Now that I'm about to rewatch his tenure, I'll have to be on the lookout for that. In my memory, there was absolutely subtlety, but I'm always watching from an actor's viewpoint and it may be just I remember the actors giving the writing subtlety. (And yes, I know, this board likes to bring up Barbara jumping out of the window every chance it gets. It does not help my point at all; however, it was one moment in 4 years.) Not understanding the veteran characters? John continued to be a d!ck. Lisa still butted her nose into everyone's business. Kim and Bob were the "stable couple" at that point - something every soap opera needs. Yet he kept them busily involved in their children's lives. Something I think we can all agree that, once in your 60s on ANY sort of television show, that's your role. Lucinda had fantastic storylines. Traveling to Malta to save Holden and Luke. Showdowns with both her daughters - many showdowns. Not adept at poignancy? Bryant's death and how it affected everyone. Katie and Simon's wedding and subsequent relationship. Jack and Carly's 3 year arc during his time. Jake and Molly's wedding. Jake giving up the twins to Donna and Marley. Rose and Paul's love affair (before being recast by that guy from ABC.) Warmth? Nancy was full of it as well as a mischievous twinkle in her eye when she appeared. Holden and Lily's relationship. Aaron and Lucy's. Carly and Jack's. Bob and Kim's. The Lily/Carly/Emily friendship that bonded them from James kidnapping them. It just goes to show...art is incredibly subjective. As I said above, two people can view the same piece of art and have completely different feelings about it. That's what makes art (and love) grand!

Yeah, I can see Lucinda, John, Katie, Nancy, Barbara, Emily. Obviously it's quick and they're tiny but it would look pretty stupid if there was just four large shots making up the globe. I mean it's obvious that it's made of clips from the show. I don't think it's really important to need to make out every single one. The point is made and gets across to the viewer.

The show I was watching. LOL Loved Katie. She was one of the main reasons I watched the show. There are a lot of Katie lovers out there. The die-hard fan community may not have taken to her. But, yeah, she was pretty popular. So was Molly. And Henry. And Carly. And Jack. And pretty much every character the die-hards seem to be so against. No shade intended. Just a different viewpoint. Everyone I know who watched ATWT in the '00s loved Katie. Saying she's everyone's sweetheart...well, of course, no character is EVERYONE'S sweetheart...but to a lot of us, she sure was! (And is, for me, as she's been on for 2 years now of my rewatch. Currently in May '00.)
