Apparently talking about race, or bigotry, - or making white America face a changing world, or simply not being white - means 'only governing half the country'. And to be clear, Obama used EOs after it was clear the GOP would never willingly govern responsibly or meet him at the table for anything. They made it clear from the day he became President-Elect that their only strategy and goal was to obstruct him and run him out of office. McConnell said that when Obama was first elected. By contrast, the GOP both pre- and post-Obama has used EOs to subvert the rule of law. Pretending it's the same is a sop to wounded white ego (and I am, for the record, plenty white). But the truth is we can throw all the actual facts we want at this argument and there is no point. Once a conservative has their alternative facts made up in their mind, it's about pride. Not reality. Admitting they're not the same would mean one side has a net loss. That is not acceptable in far too many people's minds these days.

I am equally shocked by that, Chit.

I think Jones will probably lose anyway, but I don't think this is going to move that needle much. NY has had its fair share of failed/muted terror attacks in the last decade.

Twin Peaks
Yes, I misread. I'm just happy for Kyle getting nominated. I personally expect a few Emmy nominations as the critics loved the show, but we'll see. We're a long way from the show getting panned, which I half-expected last summer, so anything can happen. I don't care for this guy's fanedits but I do like this trailer:

What specifically is wrong and extreme about the response to Donald Trump? I'll wait.- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
Wow. She doesn't need to work but wants to - I am so happy for her. It's been mentioned before, but Netflix's excellent Mindhunter not only stars OLTL and Broadway star Jonathan Groff, but also features ATWT's Michael Park and Joseph Cross (best known for later film work, but he was one of the teen Casey Hugheses on ATWT) in guest roles. Park is a hot silverback these days.- Twin Peaks

I love Dustin Hoffman's work, and I can believe he (hopefully) regrets what was loathsome, antiquated behavior - same as Al Franken, whose behavior is still in fact quite recent and perhaps less egregious. That doesn't make these incidents any less foul - and while these men are not Harvey Weinstein or Bryan Singer, that doesn't mean their behavior is acceptable, it doesn't mean these women shouldn't be heard and that these men shouldn't be called out. I personally found the John Oliver episode cringeworthy on both sides. I sympathized with Oliver's feelings more than Hoffman's but I don't know that there was any right way to handle any of that. I think the key is that most of us don't know exactly how to handle every one of these, case by case, quite yet. The Franken situation was very sad as I still admire him, but untenable. He had to walk if we were to draw a line with the voters. He'll still be able to do good work, I think, in time, from a different place. As for Dustin Hoffman, I hope he's taking stock of his choices as a man and a professional. He comes out of an era when the Method Actor could do literally anything on a set, especially to women - the Meryl Streep stories from Kramer vs. Kramer have been legend for years, and were simply tolerated. That could never happen today and it shouldn't. I still admire his work but he's got soul-searching to do. ETA: The Rosseter account is worse than I thought. Ugh.- Twin Peaks

That took a few months longer than I expected.- Netflix: One Day at a Time
That's cute.- The Politics Thread
I suspect some are. But that doesn't make the situation any less untenable given the volume of the accusers and where we're at socially in this moment, especially with Roy Moore. All we can do is hope voters remember which party stood with predators and which party tried to clean house of men, however nobleminded, with serious lapses in judgment.- The Politics Thread
I deeply admire what Al Franken's done in Congress and I love his other work, but it doesn't surprise me he has skeletons coming out as a comedian of a certain age. I wish he could stay, but given the number of accusers now I don't think we can be equal to the moment (or stand up to the Moore situation) if he doesn't resign. I don't think there's a choice.- Twin Peaks
