  1. I don't understand why they didn't keep Tom Ligon on the show. He could have been a rival for Victor. When did Peggy Brooks get written out ? I don't think she lasted into 1982. Bill Bell seemed to be at a loss as what to do with her or Greg Foster.

That Brian Forbes/Ashley pairing was an odd short lived storyline. They brought him on, then he was gone within a year. He went to make a phone call and never came back. Jay Kerr who played the role did an interview for a website for another series he was on and he said he hated doing Y&R and that he stank at soap opera. He said surprisingly people still recognize him from Y&R and that's what they ask about most. He even made the crack about disappearing never to be seen again.

  2. I wonder whatever happened to the "dream house" in the long run. OK, this clip was in July 1974 - Doug Watson joined as Mac Cory later in the year, but I'm not exactly sure when.

I wonder how long they kept Alice's house too. Did they show it again when Jackie Courtney returned to the show in 1984 ? It appears to be a Colonial Style house with an early american flavor with the diamond grid windows etc....The furniture though looks like modern ugly 70's crap to give it a contemporary twist. It would have looked better with more traditional furniture.

  3. Had he lived, he'd be nearly 56 now. The accident occurred on October 18, 1984, and he was taken off life support a few days later. It is a missed opportunity that Aaron Spelling didn't cast him on a regular role on one of his shows.

Such a tragedy. He had his whole life ahead of him and it was cut short by a mistake. I thought Aaron would have snapped him up after the Male Model film.

  4. I finally watched that 48 Hours piece, and what annoyed me the most is how they kept trying to bait Bill Bell and others on the show to act like they were doing crap and they should just phone it in because fans were too stupid to notice. They just seemed to hate the idea that the soaps were of any quality whatsoever.

What they did with Susan Lucci, setting her up to look silly and deluded compared to Linda Dano, was beyond unprofessional.

I think my favorite part of the piece was Bill Bell's response to whether they'd keep doing issue stories if they tanked the ratings. Idealistic-but-pragmatic in action.

The stuff about Kay Alden came next.

Rick Domeier, the Jack auditioner they kind of gave the edit which suggested we should see him as fooling himself, became a QVC host in 1994 and is still there. I guess he got the last laugh.

The majority of the media has always had a disdain for soaps and soap fans and slams them every chance they get.

I miss Bill Bell. Y&R died when he did. Kay Alden could have carried on the legacy, but Sony threw her under the bus by sticking her with that albatross Lynn Marie Latham.

  5. I don't know, but had he lived, Jon-Erik might have made an interesting Miles Colby on The Colbys (with all due respect to Maxwell Caulfield).

Yes, he would have been great as Miles too. I can't believe Jon Erik was not snapped up for a regular role on a primetime soap.

  6. Of course! Isn't that the way it always works? Or maybe RetroTV has employees following this board. Boo hiss!!!!

I know. It's too bad when you can't take a your own home video recording and use it the way you see fit. It's not like anyone is making money off it.

  7. That's an interesting concept. He had guested on another Spelling show (Hotel, as a love interest for Emma Samms, no less) and worked with Joan Collins on the male model TV movie, but I think both of those occurred after Jack Coleman had already been cast as Steven. Maybe if he had been given a role on Dynasty - any role - he wouldn't have gone anywhere near a prop gun. Can you believe later this month marks 30 years since the freak accident that took JEH's life? Wow.

Yes, John Erik was doing the Voyagers series during Jack's first season of Dynasty. They could have dumped Jack since he stank in the role anyway. It may have been weird though after he did that Male Model film with Joan where they were sleeping together and then see them as mother and son on Dynasty.

I can't belive it has been 30 years since his death. Yes, Dynasty may have kept him away from a prop gun. Here is what he may looked like as a Carrington playing Polo.

  8. Jack Coleman looked so...harsh in the role. Al Corley had softer facial features and a quiet demeanor, which I think worked for the sensitive Steven. Plus, I think he and PSM played off each other very well - very believable as siblings who were complete opposites but loved each other regardless.

I agree. I kind of wonder what John Erik Hexum would have been like as a recast for Steven ?

  9. I wonder why Jack Coleman even took the role if he was just going to be uncomfortable playing it ? $$$ was probably the major factor, but why didn't he just try to get another part on some other show. ? He had to know what the character was all about when he signed on the dotted line.

It's funny seeing how bleached blonde he and Ted McGinley were in the 80's and how today they have dark mousey brown hair.

  10. From that era? Elizabeth Hubbard and Carolee Campbell (not to mention the second Carolee, Jada Rowland) are both still with us. I don't know who else still is.

Terry Kiser who is playing Dr. Rice is still with us and active in the business. He hit pay dirt in those Weekend At Bernie's films. He was also in that hilarious Golden Girls episode where he playes a fake Beatle and sleeps with Dorothy.

  11. I can't help but notice those bright red blinds behind the curtains in scenes. Probably some current hack designer who is obsessed with midcentury will see those while channel surfing then bring them back with a line claiming it was their creation/idea.

  12. True story: when I was in high school, we had to watch one of those old Afterschool Specials in health class. Al Corley played the brother of the main character, a teenage girl who became addicted to the bottle. It took all I had not to scream out in class, "That's Steven Carrington!" LOL!!!

I remember that Afterschool special.....LOL It would have been funny if you did yell that out.

  13. Too bad Jack Coleman never got over looking, and acting, like a soulless robot. whistling.jpgwhistling.jpgwhistling.jpg

That's true. He did that weird teeth gritting thing. He was totally uncomfortable in the role. Nolan Miller the costume designer said that Jack was very sensitive and would get angry when people would think he was like Steven in real life.

  14. I'm wondering if it's a rights issue for the affiliate. RetroTV has repeatedly stated that they don't have streaming rights. I've also seen at least one douchemonkey on their facebook page who seems to have made it his mission to rat out every live streaming affiliate he can find. In regards to the user recording episodes, but not uploading them to youtube, I can understand their concerns over the youtube nazis. A workaround, however, might be to upload them, set them to "private" (so that they don't pop up in any general youtube search or for just any user) and then provide viewing links to just the people they screen. In any event, I'll take anything I can get. These episodes were thought lost for decades and haven't seen the light of day for over 45 years. I'm tickled just to see/hear/read ANYTHING.

That rat needs his butt kicked. What freaking business is it of his who wants to stream. He's probably one of the snitches that gets youtube users flagged for uploading.

  15. I hope someone out there is recording and will upload at some point. It might just take some time. I'm amazed at all the vintage Y&R material that Alphanguy74 is uploading in the Old Y&R Articles thread.

  16. Re Snapper and Chris. That was when Kelly Harmon (Mark Harmon's sister)was cast as Dr Jane Lewis and they were hinting at Snapper/Jane but nothing came of it.I recall that David Hasselhoff was not on regularly and so the stories for Snapper were on/off. Maybe he was working on a primetime pilot? Was it Semi-Tough or was that Josh Taylor?

I never knew Kelly Harmon was on Y&R. I was just a kid then. Kelly was best known as the Tic Tac commercial girl. Mark & Kelly's sister Kristen "Kris" was the wife of teen idol Ricky Nelson. Kris played herself on the family show Ozzie & Harriet and a recurring role on Adam-12 as Kent McCords wife. Kent got his start on O&H and was a close friend of Ricky's.

  17. It seems like for years and years that ABC and NBC dominated the awards shows and magazine fan fare. Y&R was just kind of there being over looked again and again. I don't see how Jeanne Cooper, Brenda Dickson and Jaime Lyn Bauer didn't get nominated for some of their work early on.

Speaking of Chris and Snapper, I know Chris became a Jabot model during her last year on the show (1982). Didn't Jack flirt with her ?

Prior to her working at Jabot, there was some sort of a storyline where Chris wanted new furniture etc....and Stuart loaned her the money to redecorate. Snapper then invited a doctor and his wife to dinner and the doctors wife recognized how expensive some of their furnishings were and Snapper later exploded and told Stu to shove his money.

  18. Bless the person who uploaded this for us all to enjoy.

I'm surprised they re-cast Maggie with an actress who looked absolutely nothing like Ann Williams. The timeline for Ms. Williams leaving sounds right. The reason she quit TD was because she was pregnant with her first child, and Amanda was born in August 1965. Of course, by the time this episode of TD aired, Ms. Williams had been playing Eunice on SFT for over a year.

SoapDope, I've thought that about young Liz Hubbard for quite some time. She was a stunner!! Wow!! I wonder if she had ever done any modeling.

I also agree with the gloves, hats, etc. I'm a big Bewitched fan, and it is always a treat seeing how people dressed up even to go to mundane places like the supermarket on both the daytime and primetime shows of that era. Both Elizabeths (Hubbard and Montgomery) had that air of elegance.

Yes, people dressed to impress in the 60's. I wonder too if Liz did any modeling.

  19. Getting back to PSM, I also read elsewhere that she was fired from her role as Nancy Drew because she had posed for Playboy. It seems from her departure from both her famous roles, there are contradictions.

Anyway, which Fallon do you think John James' Jeff had more chemistry with - PSM or ES?

How long after Michael the chauffer was dropped did his portrayer, Wayne Northrop, join DAYS?

There are contradictions concerning PSM leaving her roles. I thought PSM posed for the spread after she left Nancy Drew as a way to get back at the producers. I have also read over the years she wanted leave Dynasty early on and kept saying "I've got to get off this show"

I think PSM had the best chemistry with John James.

Wayne Northrop started appearing on Days in late 1981, so he must have gotten the job shortly after being let go from Dynasty. I have seen episodes posted of when he first appeared.
