  1. Yes, that was one of the absolute best of the many disasters that has befallen this little village after the plane crash, and the Kings remain the best inhabitants of Home Farm since the Tates. Subsequent families have failed miserably to live up to them.

I'm currently reading episode recaps from the early years on a wikia site. When the first couple DVD volumes came out, someone graciously posted the episodes on YouTube. I hurriedly watched what I could, but they unfortunately stopped doing so to my knowlegde. Watching them, I was fascinated by the character of Alison Gibbons and reading about her further in the recaps that fascination only grew. It's a shame Emmerdale felt the need to always have such upheaval in the earlier years, because I think she should have lasted a lot longer. The fact that she came out of prison, having the tragedy of both her husband and child's death on her shoulders, never feeling it was right to move on with another man depsite constant interest. It was a bit of a weird show in that, once a charactr started to get a proper build up, they were hastily written out never to be heard from again. A strange way of thinking.

I wish they would have kept on releasing the early years on DVD. The show only aired twice a week back then and regularly took long seasonal breaks so it wouldn't have been that difficult to continue, at least up to 1979. But maybe the sales figures were disappointing and that's why they didn't continue.

I don't think anyone has denied that this has happened in the past, but what people then seem to forget to address is the power imbalance which caused this in the first place. And this only applies to Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry. What about all the women from other professions who have reported similar claims? I don't know how  it is in the US, but here we've had reports of sexual harassment and abuse from virtually every aspect of society. I'd like to see men try to justify that.

To start blaming women for these horrible stories by bringing up the casting couch system is something that I expected would happen, but I for one hope that this will not succeed and that the blame for this is put where it belongs, on the men. This is not simply a Hollywood problem, this is a problem permeating the whole society and it's time to deal with it, openly and honestly.

We've had massive problems here in recent years with women being sexually harassed and even raped right in the middle of a crowd on music festivals, and when one female artist, Zara Larsson, spoke out about this many men immediately tried to shift the focus by attacking her and calling her man-hater and other, non-printable words. Until we men, as a group, start to accept responsiblity for this behaviour, nothing is going to change. Naturally the majority of us men haven't done anything, but we still have a very important part to play. Now we must do our bit to ensure that this kind of behaviour is stopped, by speaking out against it, and calling out those men who have committed these crimes.

  3. Yes, all throughout the 1970s they only had a small group of core characters and other characters would come in for a story and then leave, never to be heard of again. It was one of the few downsides of those early years. Alison did last longer than most of these characters, but there was definitely untapped potential in the character.

On a sad note, Carolyn Moody, who played Alison, passed away as early as 1989, only 49 years old.   :(

All these things make one's head spin. You knew of a casting couch, but didn't dream it was this HUGE. Of course, there is  large amount of double standard around as well, because women can do it, and nobody bats an eyelash. I think people are also lumping someone whistling, or pinching someone's butt in with stuff that's truly heinous. I mean, someone pinching your ass should not be some big deal unless you've got serious emotional problems.

Yes, some women have almost certainly behaved badly, but I seriously doubt that it's on a scale even remotely comparable to what men have done, and still do. So let's not try to shift focus from the heinous behaviour of these men, because it is almost overwhelmingly men.

And while some behaviour is more despicable than other I don't think it's entirely wrong to lump them all together, because they're symptoms of the same disease in our society. At the end of the day all these actions are wrong, whether it's pinching someone's butt against their will or something more serious. It's all sexual abuse, and it's all wrong, and it should not be tolerated in any shape or form.

  5. I didn't mean that the stories were alike, just that once again it seems like a murderer will get off without punishment on this show. They will probably use Moira's post-partum depression as reason. Another option is that Adam takes the blame for his mother and no-one finds out that Moira is actually the guilty one.

Meh at Moria being Emma's killer. That was kind of expected as it was either between her, Ross, or Laurel. Personally, I found hit more profound when it appeared that Emma committed suicide. Making this story a murder mystery has just made it worse for me.

So is Natalie Robb leaving or are they gonna let Moira get away with it, just like they did with Carl King when he murdered his father?

And I agree that it was such a shame to turn this story into a murder mystery.

  8. I have to admit that I've been partly guilty of that. When Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland and there was dicussion about extraditing him to the US to stand trail my first thought was: "Why don't they just let it go? It's been so long, stop harassing this man, He's been through enough anyway". But then I thought about it and felt deeply ashamed of myself. He raped a girl, and he should have to face the consequences for what he did, just as she has had to do since then.

I also have to admit that I really don't want some of the rumours I've read in this thread to be true, like the ones about Steven Spielberg. And I would be completely crushed if there were accusations about someone like Peter Jackson, whose Tolkien movies are some of my all-time favourite movies. So in a way I can understand why someone would defend these men. Like I said I had the same gut reaction when it came to Polanski, and he's not even someone I particularly care about. So I can imagine how hard it would be if it was someone you've admired who turned  out to be a criminal who could do things like this.

Hopefully all this will change now. I know that I have changed at least.

It's such an unnecessary thing to do as well. Jerusalem's status is such a controversial issue, and to do something like this is just like throwing petrol on a fire.

This hasn't happened yet in the US?

Here we have had stories from not only actresses, but also from musicians (both in the popular genre and in the classical genre), politicians, athletes, people in the legal profession, teachers, people in health-care, people who work backstage in film and theater etc. It feels like hardly a day has gone by without new revelations.
