  1. Weston/Conboy derailed a noble attempt by Rauch/Taggart/Culliton to ground and center the show. Even though they may have gotten the ratings up for what I believe was Feb Sweeps of 2004 with that ridiculous Maryanne Carruthers story, they were just as destructive to the show's core as some of their predecessors; McTavish, B&E, etc.

    Soaps Christmas Ratings

Thanks to @I Am A Swede, I copied this article also here from the Emmerdale and Corie threads. :)

I am happy EE is back on top for the soaps! At least for a day! :) I didn't watch Emmerdale or Corie, so I cannot judge on the quality, but I loved EE holiday episode, so I'd say it is deserved :D

Congrats. The show has actually been making gains month to month all year. This was to be expected, but good news ultimately; being their most watched episode for Xmas since 2019.

  3. RIP Kamar 😥

As complicated as was his final years on OLTL were, (propping of Antonio's character) I preferred those above the propping the show did with John McBain's character during it's last few years. And of course those fond memories of Antonio's first few years on the show.

I imagine the women will hold onto the secret until next Xmas where someone like Dean will stumble across the actual truth (throughout the year) and use it to taunt Linda. This'll allow the writers to play up on "poor Linda" even more. The women will go around the Square all next year swearing each other to secrecy as they feel tortured about the act.

For all it's worth, I do admire the show for ignoring the obvious that without her children and Mick, Linda is aimless as a character, and the show is pretty much throwing everything in her direction to make sure she remains relevant; from introducing her mom and soon-to- be step dad and family, to bringing back her rapist.

Here's my prediction as to where things could go, possibly leading up to the anniversary in 2025.

    Spoiler

Looking at the big picture of it all; I strongly believe that the main reason they had Linda turn out to be the killer (who is now a functioning alcoholic) is that when Linda is arrested; Lauren having learned the truth of Annie's paternity sometime prior, will blab the truth to Max and he'll make his triumphant return to the square and battle it out for custody of Annie. 😩

However, one of them will be the "enforcer" (a la Chrissie) trying to keep the truth under wraps.

I have a feeling that it will be Suki who is the enforcer or the schemer of the group; as she has shown a devious side when she first arrived having faked having cancer. It's that side of her may jeopardize her relationship with Eve since Nish might be out of the picture.

Denise and Stacey will have their squabbles because Stacey bedded Denise's husband. That'll create immense conflict. I wonder if Jack will redeem himself down the road by losing his job all just to cover for Denise. Kathy and maybe Sharon might be the ones who are levelheaded in this scheme.

If Dean did not see the murder, then I can definitely see Linda accidentally alluding to it when Dean accuses her of harboring another secret (her drinking).

Then there's also Keanu's dad (the show could cast a big name actor for the role) who is in prison for being violent...could he also come back to enact revenge, most importantly against Sharon....possibly bringing back Karen too to make an unholy alliance with him.

There are so many routes to take with this story in 2024 and possibly into early 2025.

  5. That A-M barely interacted with anyone outside of Marina and Harley. It was a horrible return. With the exception of Dinah, many of Wheeler's returns, most notably recasts, were like new characters. Dylan? Unrecognizable. Mallet? A Pig and Neanderthal. Susan/Daisy? Basically a new teen character.

If not a stronger actor, I would've loved to have seen A-M interact with characters outside of Wheeler/Kreizman's favorites and reference some history. Vanessa, Frank, anyone who was a Bauer on the canvas. Even Holly. I would've even supported them forming some type of new bond between him and Dinah. All of that went out of the window when A-M was forced to be in the orbit of the Cooper girls, which really was the characters undoing the last time he was in Springfield.

On a technical level I agree with you, and ATWT did keep more of their longtime vets, but I do think GL, in spite of so much destruction and callousness, still found some semblance of itself in that final year or so through the returns and through re-centering vital characters like Vanessa (even if I wish she'd had more to do). That's what I was missing from ATWT. So many choices that felt obvious, like bringing back Andy even for a day, never happened. That history was even more of a core for me with ATWT than it was for GL, so the erosion of it over ATWT's last fifteen years made it harder for me to watch.

    I agree with this sentiment.

I would mention at this point one dark story from AMC's Megan McTavish. Possibly she should have her own dark story sub-topic but never mind that. The one I am thinking of now is the UnAbortion.

I would name the Brent/Marian Crane story on GL, another one penned by Megan McTavish. Watching this story as a kid was unnerving. I really do hate that we lost one of my favorite characters; Nadine, to this psycho and it was so horrible how she went.

Which also brings me to also having literal nightmares when I watched poor Frankie beg for her life on Another World.

Crazy how I do believe both these stories took place around the same time.

@KhanI didn't watch ATWT much.. but my late mom did.  She described Melanie's Emily as tortured and sensual.

When I watch old Youtubes of her Emily... I see someone that is hard/tough on the outside (on the account of her childhood), yet very soft on the inside.  That dichotomy was what made her Emily so compelling to watch.  She reminded me of a 40s actress in terms of how she portrayed Emily.

Kelley's Emily was colder, tortured, yet very neurotic.   She lacked the sensuality and sadness that Melanie's Emily had... but I did think her Emily was a good one.... if you looked at her Emily as an entirely different character.

As a GL fan, and not to derail the topic too much, it was like going from McKinsey to Dusay, or Sherry Stringfield to Liz Keifer.

I only had the opportunity of watching KMH's Emily in real time on the show, and I think she is a capable actress, but watching YouTube clips of Smith's Emily it is totally like watching a different character.

Yeah, Jack is kind of looking into Eve's disappearance, but basically the police in general is. They questioned Ravi and Nish in the last episode on Thursday. Can you maybe share which casting news is making you think it's Jack? I am curious now :D

    Spoiler

Jack's daughter Penny, and his niece Lauren are returning after Christmas.

  10. There's been hints that there might be two deaths on Christmas. I definitely believe Nish is one of the deaths, especially considering the cafe was signed over to him, this would a easy way to get the cafe back under the ownership of the Beales again.

However if there is a second death, I suspect it will be either Dean or Jack. With the returns of two characters after Christmas (photos showing both women dressed in black) I can't help but to think Jack does indeed die, and this leads to the ladies killing Nish. The hints where Denise holding a bottle of champagne, the bottle Jack gifted Denise last week, and wasn't Jack in possession of the cufflinks? My first guess would be Dean, but Jack is quickly becoming a close second to who dies at this point. Isn't he also investigating Eve's disappearance too?

I see Days and AW weren’t doing too well the week I was born lol

But then again, that was also the week that Sheila kidnapped Lauren.

    A big thank you to @JAS0N47! 😃😃

Makes me wonder what could've helped NBC Daytime during this period. A cross over event between their soaps? Better promotion?

Ultimately I'm going to assume better writing, at least for DAYS and SB
